WATER QUALITY MONITORING

Everything at a glance. Water quality varies greatly not only worldwide but also regionally. As a result, water treatment requirements also differ. In order to guarantee an optimum end product, you must constantly monitor the quality of the water, even during the individual treatment steps. This applies in particular if you supply water to end consumers or processing companies.

Analytical Sensors and Cubes

Miniaturisation and modularisation. Each Cube is equipped with MEMS technology.

“Micro-Electro-Mechanical Systems” which are miniaturised components that combine logic elements or micromechanical structures in a single microchip. Sensor chips are integrated into the analysis cubes. There are five measuring parameters as separate analysis cubes: pH, reduction potential (ORP), conductivity, free chlorine, turbidity and iron.

(Burkert Types MS01, MS02, MS03, MS04, MS05 & MS06)

Iron measuring module

An excessively high iron concentration in water can cause long-term sedimentation of iron particles in pipes and valves, thereby leading to a reddish discolouration of water for the end user. The iron content must be constantly monitored. The cube operates fully automatically and is characterised by its extremely compact dimensions. Cuttingedge flow injection analysis requires only a few reagents.

< 6 litres of water for every measuring procedure

Chlorine and chlorine dioxide measurement

Chlorine is used against harmful microorganisms and to disinfect drinking water. Unlike conventional solutions, the sensor cube measures without electrolytes, which makes the sensor particularly low maintenance. Additionally, it carries out measurements in a very stable manner, irrespective of the pressure and flow rate. The maintenance effort is low and you only need to replace the measuring cell every 2-3 years.

System modularity Reduction of maintenance and calibration

pH

measurement

The pH value is an indicator of the balance in drinking water. This measurement reduces maintenance and calibration effort thanks to ISFET (ion sensitive field effect transistor) technology. It enables stable longterm measurement, especially for drinking water applications.

Easy to operate Long operating duration

ORP measurement

The ORP value or “Redox” measures sum parameters for the oxidising or reducing potential of water. Carrying out the OPR measurement with a sensor cube offers a number of advantages: Operation and maintenance are very simple, the sample water flow rate is minimal and the operating duration long.

Simple water preparation DIN/ISO 7027 or EPA method 180.1

Turbidity

measurement

Turbidity is the indicator for ingredients and suspended matter not dissolved in water. The sensor cube measures the level of turbidity in accordance with applicable standards and directives. The time and effort required for water preparation is small with cuvette measurements. Since only a small amount of sample water is required, the measurement reacts quickly to changes in the sample water.

to operate Maintenance free

Conductivity

measurement

Conductivity is the indicator for ingredients and minerals dissolved in water. Their maintenance-free measurement via the modular sensor cube is particularly suitable for drinking water. It is easy to operate, has a resistive 2-electrode sensor, hot-swap and a minimal sample water flow rate.

Transmitters & Controllers – Type 8619

Purity under control . The multiCELL Type 8619 collects and logs data from up to twelve sensors. For example, you can check the water temperature, the pH value, the conductivity, the ORP value, the chlorine content or any analogue parameter at a glance.

If required, the multi-channel transmitter can also perform a range of dosing and control functions all with a simple, intuitive user interface with large adjustable backlit graphics display.

This guarantees the necessary process reliability of your water treatment plan and the flawless quality of your products.

Mathematical functions for smart data evaluation

Extra benefits of the multiCELL Type 8619 are its mathematical functions such as the subtraction function: This compares values from different sensors quickly and clearly on the multifunction controller. You can then see in real time if something is amiss in your water treatment.

For instance, unusual pressure differences at the intake and outlet can indicate a leak or resistance in the water circuit. If water quality deteriorates between two sensors, for example, this may indicate that an ion exchanger or filter is not fully functional.

PERMEATE MONITORING

Continuous permeate monitoring. Whoever treats water or constructs plants for this purpose has a lot of responsibility. An automated monitoring system facilitates this by guaranteeing the specified water quality. The Permeate Monitoring System tailored to your plant offers everything you need for reliable and time-saving water quality monitoring. By being connected to the controller (PLC), it ensures your plant is digital. In other words: All relevant data can be viewed at a glance at all times and is fully documented.

Status overview

The status of each diaphragm can be viewed at any time on a central display. This allows you to detect the smallest amount of damage and prevent downtime. Authorised users can, for example, call up error messages in real time via the Internet.

Time-saving sampling

The system rinses and measures at the same time, thus reducing the time required, even though it samples each pressure pipe individually. The measured values are recorded digitally and sent directly to the control system.

Automated measuring

The system automatically and continuously monitors one or several plants, and is supervised by just one person. You determine the frequency of sampling individually.

Simple integration

The stand-alone system with its own PLC and software can also be easily integrated into existing plants.

Maintenance scheduling

By using the trend analysis of the system, you can schedule your maintenance activities. Your total operating costs are reduced and the plant thus pays for itself in a short period of time.

Perfect down to the last detail

For example, media-separated valves prevent seawater from reacting with the metal of the valves and falsifying measured values.

WATER BLENDING

Finding the best blend for the right water quality. To ensure that you always get the water quality that your application needs, we also mix our skills and our knowledge together. For intelligent water blending, we can offer you a standard system that can be individually modified to suit a range of different areas of application. And if the need arises, we can also provide tailor-made solutions.

Air-conditioning

Air-conditioning technology prevents corrosion and deposition in humidity and air-conditioning plant by controlling the quality of the make-up water, where it must be adjusted often by means of blending raw and pure water.

Cooling tower

Cooling tower maintenance where it is necessary to supplement process water with make-up water to prevent corrosion and deposition. The limit values for the process water are specified and maintained by the addition of make-up water.

Brewing

The quality of beer depends on the quality of the brewing water, because it has a significant effect on the taste of the beer. In order to maintain a constant high quality, the raw water often has to be almost completely desalinated by means of a membrane plant first, and then blended to produce the desired quality.

Irrigation

Poor raw water quality for irrigation can lead to over-salinisation of the soil or a shift in the soil structure. The blending unit can lower the cost of additional chemicals through exact dosage. Especially where large quantities of irrigation water are involved, blending the water makes economic sense.

Drinking water

Drinking water suppliers are subject to extremely high quality requirements. In this respect, long-term maintenance of health requirements and the prevention of damage – due to corrosion and deposition for instance –both play very important roles. Following treatment of the water through deionizing or reverse osmosis, the water has to be blended in order to comply with the locally specified limit values.

GAS DOSING

Flow measurement and regulation of gases. In order to achieve a perfect processing result, the exact dosage amounts are important. This must be the case for the oxidation air or oxygen dosing, the pH reduction before membrane systems or the CO2 addition for curing. Burkert’s gas dosing systems adopt the precise control of the quantity, avoids overdosing, saves unnecessary energy and thus contributes significantly to economic operation.
