John Masterson Burke, a New York businessman & philanthropist, wanted his estate to provide “progressive convalescent care” for those who had been released from a hospital but were not yet well enough to return to work or home. He requested that the facility would be named for his mother, Winifred Masterson Burke.
In 1912, the late Mr. Burke’s money was used to purchase 61 acres in White Plains and hire the celebrated architectural firm of McKim, Mead and White. When completed, the Burke campus featured 12 neoclassical buildings connected by a series of graceful, arched colonnades.
Originally called the Winifred Masterson Burke Relief Foundation, Burke opened its doors in April 1915. Patients came by bus from the Manhattan admitting office for treatment of pneumonia, ulcers, fatigue, cardiac problems, and thyroid disease—all illnesses of the day. The Burke program included exercise, medical supervision and daily chores. Burke was among the first institutions to encourage moderate exercise for cardiac patients and helped to establish the American Heart Association in 1924.
During World War I, Burke served as a naval hospital and the 2,000 sailors that recuperated here came to be known as The Burke Navy. World War II brought extensive changes to the field of medical rehabilitation. The vast numbers of seriously injured veterans led to an emphasis on physical and occupational therapy, improvements to wheelchairs and prosthetic limbs, and the development of community support services. As Burke’s focus changed, so did its name. The Foundation became The Burke Rehabilitation Hospital in the late 1980s.
Today, Burke is an acute rehabilitation hospital and a member of the Montefiore Health System. Our physicians, nurses and therapists all share one goal: to ensure that every patient makes the fullest possible recovery from illness, injury or surgery.
Dear Burke family and friends,
As Chair of the Board of Trustees and Executive Director of Burke Rehabilitation Hospital, it gives us great pleasure to welcome you to the 2024 Burke Award dinner, our signature fundraising event to benefit the innovative, life-changing services provided at Burke. To those of you who have been attending this event over the years, we thank you for your unwavering support and generosity. To our new friends here tonight, welcome to the Burke family. We are so glad that you are here.
Since 1915, Burke has been the only hospital in Westchester County dedicated solely to adult and adolescent rehabilitation medicine. In addition to our main hospital in White Plains, Burke also offers therapeutic care in 13 outpatient locations throughout Westchester County, the Hudson Valley, and the Bronx. Burke is a proud member of the Montefiore Health system, which includes our partner White Plains Hospital.
For more than 100 years we’ve remained steadfast in our mission to provide the highest quality medical care and rehabilitation services to ensure that each patient achieves the maximum functional recovery from illness, injury, or disability. Our mission is more than just words on a page; it is what we practice every day.
Simply put, Burke represents hope. Hope for a better, stronger and more independent tomorrow.
Our team of over 1,000 rehabilitation specialists – physicians, nurses, therapists, psychologists, case managers and other clinical and support staff – are committed to providing patients, families and caregivers with an exceptional experience.
Tonight, we celebrate the Healing Power of the Arts and their profound impact on healing both physically and emotionally. Our honorees, Aimee Hofmann and MedRhythms, are the embodiment of our mission and exemplify how artistic expression can be transformative for individuals on their rehabilitation journey.
We are proud to support the arts as an innovative and impactful resource for our patients. Proceeds from this celebratory evening will support Burke’s outstanding rehabilitative care and contribute to the Healing Power of the Arts Fund.
Enjoy the evening, and know that together we are instilling joy, promoting healing and restoring hope.
Gratefully yours,
White Plains Hospital

Aimee Hofmann is a Westchester-based abstract artist and disability advocate.
At 30, she suffered from the neurological condition, Transverse Myelitis, an inflammation in the spinal cord that caused complete paralysis from level T10 of the spine. After learning she would never walk again, art gave her peace during the difficult stages of loss, grief, self-reflection and rediscovery. Art helped her emotionally heal, as well as find joy again.
Throughout the years that followed, while facing a new life with a disability, she created a number of collections. Her works featured landscapes, abstract florals and swirl patterns, which have continued to evolve into deeper abstract work. Her most recent collections express a newfound freedom that embraces the beauty of imperfections, renewal/rebirth and nostalgia as well as using symbolisms of one’s unique life journey.
In addition to individual collectors and Burke Rehabilitation, Hofmann’s work is part of corporate collections at Amazon, JPMorgan Chase & Co., HSBC, PricewaterhouseCoopers, Intuit, State Street Bank, Ipsen, BrownAdvisory and Vigil Neuroscience. She has also shown at local and regional arts centers and has been a guest speaker at the Harvard Business School.
Hofmann lives in Westchester with her husband and two children. She is a two-time hand-cyclist marathoner, avid swimmer, fundraiser, and guest speaker. As a disabilities advocate, her goal is to continue to create awareness about inclusion and fair representation for people with disabilities.
MedRhythms has been the leading provider of Neurologic Music Therapy in the nation since 2013. It exists to restore the lives and quality of life of loved ones with neurologic impairments.

In 2023, this innovative therapy program was expanded to Burke’s outpatient department for a continuum of care. Neurologic Music Therapy is a fully donor-funded program and has increased patient outcomes and improved quality of life for countless patients at Burke.
