No musician in history has had more No. 1 singles than George Strait, the country and western icon who has topped the charts 60 times. Only The Beatles and Elvis Presley boast more platinum or multiplatinum albums than Strait, who has sold more than 100 million records. The “King of Country” first made studio magic in 1976, five years before his first release with a major label in Nashville. Strait and his Ace in the Hole Band recorded two songs at Houston’s Doggett Music Enterprises, a former studio located near the intersection of 11th and Studewood streets in the Heights. The band formed in San Marcos a short time earlier and had yet to make it big, traveling around Texas and playing at bars, festivals and other special events. Band member Mike Daily said the 7-inch, 45 rpm record produced by his father – with Strait original “I Just Can’t Go On Dying Like This” on one side and Dallas Frazier’s “Honky Tonk Downstairs” on the other – got a little airplay locally and helped Ace in the Hole land other gigs. “For a local band, if you will, to have an actual record was crazy – crazy good,” said the 64-year-old Daily, who grew up in the Heights and graduated from Waltrip High School. “It gave us some legitimacy.”
It wasn’t long before the band graduated from playing venues such as Memorial Park, Rockefellers at the corner of Heights Boulevard and Washington Avenue or the Beer Barn, which was located near the intersection of Ella Boulevard and 34th Street in the late 1970s. Once Strait signed with MCA Records and started cranking out hit songs and top-selling albums, Ace in the Hole played on some of the biggest stages in the country. Although it’s not in this year’s concert lineup for the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo, which runs from March 3-22, Strait’s band has been a fixture there. It has played the rodeo 30 times since 1983, closing out its tenure in the Astrodome in 2000 and ending last year’s rodeo by performing in front of a record crowd of 80,108 at NRG Stadium. There have been rumblings that it was Strait’s final performance at the Houston rodeo. But Daily, Ace in the Hole’s longtime steel guitar player, said he “wouldn’t bet any money on that.” “We love doing the rodeo,” he added. “It’s one of the biggest in the world.” Country connections Why did one of the world’s most well-known country music acts make its first recording in the Heights? Daily’s family and its connections in the industry, along with its roots in the neighborhood, had a lot to
do with it. Daily’s grandfather, H.W. “Pappy” Daily, started a Houston-based jukebox distribution business in the 1930s and later had a record distribution warehouse that he used to fill jukeboxes all over the region. The warehouse was located at 314 W. 11th St., which is now C&D Hardware & Gifts. At one point the business hosted live performances that were broadcast on local radio. Among the musicians to play there was country music legend Hank Williams. Photos commemorating the 1948 occasion hang on a wall in the hardware store. Pappy Daily also became a talent scout, record producer and music publisher, starting Starday Records along with Jack Starnes as well as D Records. Among the musicians he discovered or recorded were George Jones, Roger Miller, Willie Nelson and J.P. “The Big Bopper” Richardson. Nelson is scheduled the rodeo on Wednesday, March 4. “I’ve heard that Pappy Daily was like the country music guy for Texas,” C&D manager Arthur Buchanan said. “If you were from Texas, you couldn’t go to Nashville without his say so.” Many C&D customers are not aware of the building’s place in music history, at least not initially. If there ever is a contest for the best Houston rodeo love story, Heights residents Dominic and Jena Casey are going to be major contenders. Their tale began at the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo’s barbecue cook-off tent in 2012. Dominic had been a volunteer on a BBQ team for a few years and Jena had just started. They’d both gone to school at Sam Houston State University at separate times, and a mutual friend encouraged Jena to join the fun. “I said, ‘If I’m going to meet somebody, it’s going to happen at the rodeo,’ ” Jena recalled. That turned out to be a prophetic statement as Dominic and Jena indeed hit it off, spending the three-day cookoff getting to know each other. “I immediately asked her out,” Dominic said. As he also volunteered on the Gatekeepers Committee, Dominic was able to invite her as a guest to the rodeo. “When we started dating, we went to the rodeo almost every single night,” he said. A year later they were still going strong – so strong that unbeknownst to Jena, Dominic was ready to take things to the next level. He squeezed in his required number of shifts at the BBQ tent and came back on Saturday evening wearing a blazer. In his pocket was a ring. And while Dominic was doing his best to play it cool, he wasn’t entirely successful. “He was acting really weird,” Jena said, thinking that perhaps Dominic was mad at her. “He would run away, (like) he was dodging me.” Even when he got up to speak, Jena thought they had asked him to say the prayer. “I was thinking, ‘I didn’t know he was a public speaker,’” she said. “I proposed a year to the day (we met) in front of 200 people,” Dominic said. “He had a ring in one hand
and a beer in the other,” Jena recalled. She said yes. As Jena was part of the clean-up crew that night, she was wearing jeans with garbage on them during the proposal. “She joked that she had trash juice on her hands when I put the ring on,” Dominic said. Seven years later, the rodeo is still a tradition for the two. “We call the rodeo our marriage counseling,” Jena joked. “Every year we run into the people who were there that night.” For a time, Jena joined her husband on the Gatekeepers Committee. “It is one of the biggest committees,” Dominic said. “We are first ambassadors of the rodeo.” But now that the couple are parents to two children, ages 2

and 4, they needed to switch things up a bit. “It was hard having the same schedule,” Jena said. Jena is currently on the Souvenir Program Sales committee and has enjoyed widening her circle of rodeo friends. For the cook-off, though, they still get a babysitter to be able to attend together as they’ve done every year. That

includes one year that Jena was pregnant and didn’t think she could manage the evening. “He had me meet him at a medical supply store,” Jena said. “He rented a motorized scooter so I could go. (He) said he wouldn’t go without me.” Their kids tag along, too, for other rodeo happenings. One day, they’ll hear how the rodeo shaped their family.

Rodeo Round-Up turns 19th Street into cowboy country

Boots, ponchos and a cowboy hat are not typically part of Mary Wassef’s wardrobe. The Heights real estate broker makes an exception for rodeo season. Wassef wore her western giddy up last Saturday night at her Circa Real Estate office on 19th Street, where multiple businesses and several patrons participated in the thoroughfare’s Rodeo Round-Up event. The annual celebration provided an opportunity to dress up and let loose ahead of the Houston Livestock Show & Rodeo, which runs from March 3-22 at NRG Stadium. “It’s Houston,” Wassef said. “You’ve got to do this.” Wassef provided complimentary snacks and beer at her office at 350 W. 19th St., where the photography of Houston artists Bashari Guidry and Krystle Phillips also was on display. In front of the building, Alli Jarrett of neighboring Harold’s Restaurant & Tap Room was selling steak dinners that were freshly grilled by Jacinto Mejia. Across the street and a couple hundred yards to the east, there was an even larger and livelier gathering outside Jubilee. The eclectic boutique at 325 W. 19th St. started the Rodeo Round-Up and is the event’s hub, with Mitch Jacobs

and his alternative country band performing under a canopy on the street’s curb. They rocked the crowd while cowboy- and cowgirlclad customers roamed the store and waited in line for free barbecue, beer, wine and whiskey. “They have great merchandise here. They’re so generous,” Heights resident Genevieve Jackson said. “And they let us all drink and party and get ready for the rodeo.” Kacey White of Mine jewelry had a popup at Jubilee to sell her Native American handmade turquoise and silver pieces, which go well with the rodeo. She also volunteers
on two rodeo committees. White said the pre-rodeo event on 19th Street has grown and expanded, giving the Heights another wellknown community event to go along with White Linen Night in the Heights in the summer and Lights in the Heights around Christmastime. Oak Forest resident Charlie Walton got in the rodeo spirit by two-stepping on the sidewalk to the tunes played by the band. “It’s a great event,” Near Northside resident Christopher Davalos said. “It’s actually like the (rodeo) cookoff before the cookoff.”

This Notice by Declaration becomes a Security Agreement wherein User is debtor and Chioma Ngozi Odili is Secured Party, and signifies that User: (1) grants Secured Party a security interest in all of User’s assets, land, and personal property, and all of User’s interest in assets, land, and personal property, in the sum certain amount of $500,000.00 per each occurrence of use of the common law-copyrighted trade-name/trademark CHIOMA NGOZI ODILIŠ, as well as for each and every occurrence of use of any and all derivatives of, and variations in the spelling of, CHIOMA NGOZI ODILIŠ, plus costs, plus triple damages; (2) authenticates this Security Agreement wherein User is debtor and Chioma Ngozi Odili is Secured Party, and wherein User pledges all of User’s assets, land, consumer goods, farm products, inventory, equipment, money, investment property, commercial tort claims, letters of credit, letter-of-credit rights, chattel paper, instruments, deposit accounts, accounts, documents, and general intangibles, and all User’s interest in all such foregoing property, now owned and hereafter acquired, now existing and hereafter arising, and wherever located, as collateral for securing User’s contractual obligation in favor of Secured Party for User’s unauthorized use of Secured Party’s common lawcopyrighted property; (3) consents and agrees with Secured Party’s filing of a UCC Financing Statement in the UCC filing office, as well as in any county recorder’s office, wherein User is debtor and Chioma Ngozi Odili is Secured Party; (4) consents and agrees that said UCC Financing Statement described above in paragraph “(3)’’ is a continuing financing statement, and further consents and agrees with Secured Party’s filing of any continuation statement necessary for maintaining Secured Party’s perfected security interest in all of User’s property and interest in property, pledged as collateral in this Security Agreement and described above in paragraph “(2),� until User’s contractual obligation theretofore incurred has been fully satisfied; (5) consents and agrees with Secured Party’s filing of any UCC Financing Statement, as described above in paragraphs “(3)� and “(4),� as well as the filing of any Security Agreement, as described above in paragraph “(2),’’ in the UCC filing office, as well as in any county recorder’s office; (6) consents and agrees that any and all such filings described in paragraphs “(4)� and “(5)� above are not, and may not be considered, bogus, and that User will not claim that any such filing is bogus; (7) waives all defenses; and (8) appoints Secured Party as Authorized Representative for User, effective upon User’s default re User’s contractual obligations in favor of Secured Party as set forth below under “Payment Terms� and “Default Terms,� granting Secured Party full authorization and power for engaging in any and all actions on behalf of User including, but not limited by, authentication of a record on behalf of User, as Secured Party, in Secured Party’s sole discretion, deems appropriate, and User further consents and agrees that this appointment of Secured Party as Authorized Representative for User, effective upon User’s default, is irrevocable and coupled with a security interest. User further consents and agrees with all of the following additional terms of Self-executing Contract/Security Agreement in Event of Unauthorized Use: Payment Terms: In accordance with fees for unauthorized use of CHIOMA NGOZI ODILIŠ as set forth above, User hereby consents and agrees that User shall pay Secured Party all unauthorized-use fees in full within ten (10) days of the date User is sent Secured Party’s invoice, hereinafter “Invoice,� itemizing said fees. Default Terms: In event of non-payment in full of all unauthorized-use fees by User within ten (10) days of date Invoice is sent, User shall be deemed in default and: (a) all of User’s property and property pledged as collateral by User, as set forth in above in paragraph “(2),� immediately becomes, i.e. is, property of Secured Party; (b) Secured Party is appointed User’s Authorized Representative as set forth above in paragraph “(8)�; and (c) User consents and agrees that Secured Party may take possession of, as well as otherwise dispose of in any manner that Secured Party, in Secured Party’s sole discretion, deems appropriate, including, but not limited by, sale at auction, at any time following User’s default, and without further notice, any and all of User’s property and interest, described above in paragraph “(2),� formerly pledged as collateral by User, now property of Secured Party, in respect of this “Self-executing Contract/ Security Agreement in Event of Unauthorized Use,� that Secured Party, again in Secured Party’s sole discretion, deems appropriate. Terms for Curing Default: Upon event of default, as set forth above under “Default Terms,� irrespective of any and all of User’s former property and interest in property, described above in paragraph “(2),� in the possession of, as well as disposed of by, Secured Party, as authorized above under “Default Terms,� User may cure User’s default only re the remainder of User’s said former property and interest property, formerly pledged as collateral that is neither in the possession of, nor otherwise disposed of by, Secured Party within twenty (20) days of date of User’s default only by payment in full. This Notice by Declaration becomes a Security Agreement wherein User is debtor and Livina Jazelle Luxton is Secured Party, and signifies that User: (1) grants Secured Party a security interest in all of User’s assets, land, and personal property, and all of User’s interest in assets, land, and personal property, in the sum certain amount of $500,000.00 per each occurrence of use of the common lawcopyrighted trade-name/trademark LIVINA JAZELLE LUXTONŠ, as well as for each and every occurrence of use of any and all derivatives of, and variations in the spelling of, LIVINA JAZELLE LUXTONŠ, plus costs, plus triple damages; (2) authenticates this Security Agreement wherein User is debtor and Livina Jazelle Luxton is Secured Party, and wherein User pledges all of User’s assets, land, consumer goods, farm products, inventory, equipment, money, investment property, commercial tort claims, letters of credit, letter-of-credit rights, chattel paper, instruments, deposit accounts, accounts, documents, and general intangibles, and all User’s interest in all such foregoing property, now owned and hereafter acquired, now existing and hereafter arising, and wherever located, as collateral for securing User’s contractual obligation in favor of Secured Party for User’s unauthorized use of Secured Party’s common law-copyrighted property; (3) consents and agrees with Secured Party’s filing of a UCC Financing Statement in the UCC filing office, as well as in any county recorder’s office, wherein User is debtor and Livina Jazelle Luxton is Secured Party; (4) consents and agrees that said UCC Financing Statement described above in paragraph “(3)’’ is a continuing financing statement, and further consents and agrees with Secured Party’s filing of any continuation statement necessary for maintaining Secured Party’s perfected security interest in all of User’s property and interest in property, pledged as collateral in this Security Agreement and described above in paragraph “(2),� until User’s contractual obligation theretofore incurred has been fully satisfied; (5) consents and agrees with Secured Party’s filing of any UCC Financing Statement, as described above in paragraphs “(3)� and “(4),� as well as the filing of any Security Agreement, as described above in paragraph “(2),’’ in the UCC filing office, as well as in any county recorder’s office; (6) consents and agrees that any and all such filings described in paragraphs “(4)� and “(5)� above are not, and may not be considered, bogus, and that User will not claim that any such filing is bogus; (7) waives all defenses; and (8) appoints Secured Party as Authorized Representative for User, effective upon User’s default re User’s contractual obligations in favor of Secured Party as set forth below under “Payment Terms� and “Default Terms,� granting Secured Party full authorization and power for engaging in any and all actions on behalf of User including, but not limited by, authentication of a record on behalf of User, as Secured Party, in Secured Party’s sole discretion, deems appropriate, and User further consents and agrees that this appointment of Secured Party as Authorized Representative for User, effective upon User’s default, is irrevocable and coupled with a security interest. User further consents and agrees with all of the following additional terms of Self-executing Contract/ Security Agreement in Event of Unauthorized Use: Payment Terms: In accordance with fees for unauthorized use of LIVINA JAZELLE LUXTONŠ as set forth above, User hereby consents and agrees that User shall pay Secured Party all unauthorized-use fees in full within ten (10) days of the date User is sent Secured Party’s invoice, hereinafter “Invoice,� itemizing said fees. Default Terms: In event of nonpayment in full of all unauthorized-use fees by User within ten (10) days of date Invoice is sent, User shall be deemed in default and: (a) all of User’s property and property pledged as collateral by User, as set forth in above in paragraph “(2),� immediately becomes, i.e. is, property of Secured Party; (b) Secured Party is appointed User’s Authorized Representative as set forth above in paragraph “(8)�; and (c) User consents and agrees that Secured Party may take possession of, as well as otherwise dispose of in any manner that Secured Party, in Secured Party’s sole discretion, deems appropriate, including, but not limited by, sale at auction, at any time following User’s default, and without further notice, any and all of User’s property and interest, described above in paragraph “(2),� formerly pledged as collateral by User, now property of Secured Party, in respect of this “Self-executing Contract/Security Agreement in Event of Unauthorized Use,� that Secured Party, again in Secured Party’s sole discretion, deems appropriate. Daily, from P. 1B did not know about its past until overhearing a conversation between Buchanan and a reporter last month. The 69-year-old Potts is a professional saxophone player who toured for more than 30 years with Ezra Charles as well as Chubby Carrier and the Bayou Swamp Band. “That’s cool,” Potts said of C&D’s origins. “I’m a buff for any place where musicians have been and have done their thing.” The old Doggett recording studio, at 1045 Studewood St., was owned by Ray Doggett. He wrote and produced the 1958 Kenny Rogers song “That Crazy Feeling,” which was popular locally at the time. The former studio is now a bakery shop called Red Dessert Dive. Owner Jessica Lusk said there are no remaining relics or signs that the building once was a recording studio. Troubadour tryout Mike Daily had a hard time recognizing it during a recent visit, but he remembers the experience and how it came about. He grew up working at his family’s record distribution business, which his grandfather sold to his two sons, Bud and Don Daily. Don’s son, Mike, became a steel guitar player and joined a band in San
Marcos while attending Southwest Texas State University. The band, originally called Stoney Ridge, needed a lead singer in 1975 and posted a flyer on a campus bulletin board. Mike Daily said Strait, who had served in the Army and was attending Southwest Texas State on the GI bill, called about the opening and asked to audition. “He didn’t have to sing but about two lines of a song,” Daily recalled. “We were like, ‘I think the search is over.’ ” After Daily’s father heard Strait’s voice and saw the band play, Don arranged to have Ace in the Hole recorded at Doggett and produced the twosong record. Mike Daily said the band later recorded some songs at another Houston studio and, a few years later, Strait struck a deal in Nashville on his third trip to the Music City. Four decades later, Strait and the Ace in the Hole Band still play live performances together. They stopped touring full-time in 2014 but recently played in Kansas City and have recurring dates in Las Vegas. Perhaps the band will one day return to the Houston rodeo, which is close to its roots in the Heights. “It’s a special place to me,” Daily said. “It’s pretty miraculous the way the whole thing happened.”

Greenwood King honors top producers in Heights area From Staff Reports During its annual Top Producer Breakfast Feb. 21 at Houston Country Club, Greenwood King Properties celebrated its top area producers for 2019. Six agents from the office, located at 1801 Heights Blvd., received recognition. Taking the cake as the Heights office’s top producer was Amanda Anhorn, who closed 102 sales last year with a sales volume of more than $40 million. Right behind her was Alex Berry, selling 34 homes for an overall sales volume of $14.2 million. A couple more real estate agents who were just about neck and neck were Nancy Jane McMillan and Brigette
Larson. McMillan was third for the Heights office with 14 sales worth about $6.4 million. Larson sold 16 homes in 2019 that totaled about $6.3 million. Jason Knebel came in next, with 26 home sales by the end of the year worth a total of $5.3 million. Finally, Jenny Puls took 22 homes off the market for a sales volume of about $5 million. Puls also was awarded the office’s Rookie of the Year designation. Greenwood King accrued $1.25 billion in sales between its three offices in 2019.
