MARCH 2014

BURBAGE NEWS QUARTERLY Vol 2: 1 SPRING

Tell us what YOU would like to see in Burbage News Quarterly!

The front cover picture has been contributed by Mike Bird who is a member of the Burbage & District Camera and Video Club.

[1]

From Winter and we hope, into Spring within a few weeks. By the time you read this we will be into March and hopefully the weather will have greatly improved and we can see some blue skies and sunshine.

There are other groups in the Village who have not sent in any contribution yet - so make a New Year’s Resolution in 2014 to write a few words about yourselves. We also have a regular Quiz page - no prizes though!

As I write this, the wind outside is howling around the house, the lights are flickering and the rain is beating at the windows but at least we are not flooded. I think all our hearts go out to the poor souls who are battling the flood waters and have had to be evacuated from their homes.

If you have had the urge to write a short story, a poem or anything else and would like to share it with other people, here is your opportunity! BNQ is the online version of Burbage News but as we have so much more space available a lot more can be covered and there is plenty of room for photographs.

Burbage News Quarterly has been running for a whole year now and has grown from a few pages in the first issue to fifty three pages in the last one. This was probably an exception because there was a lot going on in the Village when we won the Best Kept Large Village competition and hosted the Great Burbage Bake-Off.

It is an opportunity to encourage more Community events. If there is something that you would like to see happening in the Village, e.g. a group for painting, or craft, a discussion group, a Bridge or Whist group or anything else - let me know - it can go into BNQ and who knows, there may be somebody willing to start an interest group.

There were lots of photographs sent in from members of the Camera and Video Club, the Flower Club, It’s a Stitch Up and Woman’s Own. We have some very talented people in the Village and it is interesting to see their efforts.

It is YOUR magazine so YOU contribute something to make it interesting - MY challenge to you for 2014!

For the first time we had a contribution from the Fitness and Faith group and I am sure we’ll be hearing more from them in the future.

The DEADLINE for the next issue will be 17th May Val Clowes - Editor BNQ

Information about the Market and Meet events are shown as well as a contribution from the Film Club.

PARISH COUNCIL JANUARY REPORT 2014 An update following council meetings held in early January 2014 It has been a very busy start to the year and we’ve already made some big decisions. Firstly, we have endorsed the Neighbourhood Planning Steering Group’s recommendation that we produce a Neighbourhood Plan covering the entire Parish. Additional details can be found on the Neighbourhood Planning page of the Burbage News. Still on planning, the Council narrowly agreed to support, with conditions, the Persimmon planning proposal. Full details of the proposal and our response are on the Wiltshire Council web site

which you can get to from: http://burbagepc.org.uk/planning.php? template=2 We have also set the precept for 2014/15. It has been set at about half of what it was last year so although the Burbage precept forms only one part of Council Tax, we should all see a reduction in our tax bills from April. We have worked long and hard to achieve consensus on this and the decision to reduce the precept by so much was not an easy one. Cllr Grabowski, in her role as Responsible Finance Officer (RFO), argued a convincing case but one not without risk. You can see the budget detail on the minutes of the meeting held on 16 Jan 2014.

ALL are invited to attend the Parish Council Meetings.

[3]

Finally, we are still looking for people to join the Council - there are 2 vacancies to fill so if you want to influence Council decisions and can spare time to get involved please contact me or the Parish Clerk (clerk@Burbagepc.org.uk). We’re also looking for someone with an accounting and finance background to take over as RFO. Details will be published in due course. Steve Colling (chairman@Burbagepc.org.uk)

PARISH COUNCIL FEBRUARY REPORT 2014 An update following council meeting held on 10 February 2014 Hopefully, by the time you read this the weather will have taken a turn for the better. The rain has caused some relatively minor flooding and perhaps this is a good time to remind everyone, particularly farmers, land owners and builders of their obligations and the need to keep our roads and paths clear of mud and debris. Our narrow lanes, some without paths, are dangerous enough without pedestrians, especially wheel chair users, having to struggle because of churned-up paths and heavy deposits of mud. Drainage ditches also need to be kept functional to prevent flooding. So the message is, please cleanup!

and received reports from Burbage Primary School and the Neighbourhood Planning Steering Group. The Council has endorsed the recommendation made by the Neighbourhood Planning Steering Group to seek approval from Wiltshire Council to produce a Neighbourhood Plan covering the whole Parish. Martin Cook will lead the work and keep us all informed on progress over the coming months. I attended the Planning meeting held in Devizes this evening and can report that Persimmon have been granted outline planning permission to build 45 houses on the Land East of the High Street. One of the conditions is that 40% (18 houses) should be affordable.

The Parish Council met on Monday 10 February

[4]

Finally, we are still looking for people to join the Council - there are still 2 vacancies to fill. Yes it does take some commitment and some of the issues are relatively minor but we need a full Council to get a fair and even balance. So if you want to influence Council decisions and can spare time to get involved please contact me or the Parish Clerk (clerk@Burbagepc.org.uk). We’re also looking for someone with an accounting and finance background to take over as RFO. The next Burbage Parish Council meeting will take place on Wednesday 12 March 2014 in the Church Centre commencing 7.45pm. Steve Colling (chairman@Burbagepc.org.uk)

Last December a group from IT’S A STITCH-UP went out to dinner to celebrate the Festive Season, and enjoyed a very pleasant meal at the Three Horseshoes. Being a busy time of year not everyone could manage to join in, but with a bit better forward planning we will endeavor to put this right in the future. We have now secured dates for the whole of this year. Our first two meetings of 2014 were on 18 January and 15 February. January’s meeting was a bring-what-you-are-workingon session and was an interesting mix of knitting and crochet, quilting, bag and purse making, curtains and free machine embroidery. Everyone was delighted to see the finished quilt at the end of the session! The purse-maker drew a lot of interest too and was persuaded to teach us all in February and we had a terrific take-up! Seventeen ladies, including four guests, wanted to learn the skill and there would have been more but for illness. It was a tremendous session. Many ladies got to take home

a lovely completed purse (others will look forward to finishing it for homework) Abi our teacher was so patient and gave us all clear, written plus step by step verbal instructions and even a label to stitch into the finished item, though I think she found us more challenging than her primary school pupils! The remaining dates are: 22 March, 19 April, 17t May, 21 June, 19 July, 16 August, 20 September, 18 October and 15 November – all in the Church Centre, all 9.30am -12.30pm, with no meeting in December. Please put those in your diaries and look out for posters and in the Burbage News for details of any special sessions. We do hope you will join us. There is always something interesting going on, always someone who can help you sort out any tricky bits, always tea, coffee and biscuits (sometimes cake!) and we are a very friendly group New members get the first session free, thereafter the cost is £3.50, or £2.00 for students. Contact Helen 810949 or Kay 811093 for more information. [22]

BURBAGE & DISTRICT CAMERA & VIDEO CLUB Report on the February Meeting of the Club The Club met for its monthly meeting on Wednesday 19 February 2014 and the subject for the evening was tabletop photography. Lighting was provided by Larry Emerson who brought the latest and probably the most advanced technology in studio lighting using cool running C.F. lamps. Members selected model cars as subjects and enjoyed over two and half hours of intense photography producing some stunning images. We also produced some close-ups of a mechanical watch using add-on lenses, a cheaper form of macro photography. Later in the session, an enthusiastic model joined us and some remarkable portrait shots were produced. Our next meeting will be on Wednesday 19 March at 19:30 in the British Legion Hall here in Burbage. Every one, ranging from complete beginners to advanced enthusiasts, is welcome. The subject for our next meeting will be portraiture so if you, or any one you know, is interested in being our model for the evening, please contact any one of our members. We still require increasing our membership in order to take full advantage of the facilities available so please do come and support us - see you next month? For more information please contact Sonny Hamid on 01672 811 933 or Mike Bird on 01672 810 574.

THE ANNUAL FESTIVE CELEBRATION The 2013 Festive Celebration was held in the Village Hall as usual, on Sunday 15 December We really pushed the boat out this year in getting the hall ready for our wonderful guests, as you will see from the photos! The kitchen served our world-famous “Burbage News Secret Recipe Mulled Wine” and a few other tidbits, while providing free soft drinks for the band, any designated drivers and of course, anyone who wanted a glass of squash! Our guests were entertained by the excellent Phoenix Brass Band and the superb Burbage Signing Choir (with a minor interruption from the Fun Singing Choir). Our crazy raffle with around thirty plus prizes (mostly donated!) once again gave a lot of people some lovely items to

take home - already gift-wrapped and ready to go under the Christmas Tree. The turnout this year was a little disappointing after so much effort had gone into setting up this event. The Festive Celebration is, after all, a fundraiser for the Burbage News and we really need the support of our community! We did just about breakeven but it was touch-and-go for a while, giving us some thought for what we should do for 2014 Table decorations were provided courtesy of the ladies of the church who also had these centre-pieces on sale at the Christmas Tree Market, the weekend before. Other table decorations were made and some bought, but all were for sale and some folk bought a special centrepiece that had caught their eye They say a picture speaks a thousand words so without further ado….

The tables and chairs were set. Each table covered with colourful cloths and dressed with flower arrangements, mini sleighs, candles and other decorations all for sale! [33]

Here’s Sue Gray manning the kitchen. We have a special urn for all that lovely warm mulled wine, which was later loaned to All Saints Church, along with our surplus mulled wine, for the Christmas Carol evening, so none got wasted (well, that’s not saying anything about the drinkers…)

Beautifully adorned with some unique hair extensions, please allow me to introduce Mrs Glenda Jackson - chairman of the Good Companions Club and our last-minute hero for stepping in to help at the final hurdle

Yours tru ly (right) greeting A remark people as able feat they arriv this year was seate ed. as d before the start! almost everyone

Of course, the early birds got first dibs at the table decorations and these sold quite well, all at very reasonable prices, too

We set the hall up to comfortably seat 98 people, with space for another 22 if needed (max capacity for seated). The head count was only 78 this year, but all enjoyed themselves. This also shows the stack of raffle prizes over by the bar, and you can see what a fantastic, festive place the hall was - beautifully decorated by the Village Hall Management Team well done And we’re off! Well, almost… There were a couple of birthdays to be recognised first, with what ended up as three rounds of ‘Happy Birthday’ from the band, for these two ladies on the left.

[34]

OK, now we’re off! Phoenix Brass Band were competently led by bandleader and local Burbage Resident Mr Anthony Palmer, who provided great humour and leadership for the evening. Phoenix Brass performed admirably throughout - as they have done on all our Festive Celebrations!

John (BME, and Freeman of the Village) and Mary Powell’s table, with friends. Various musical instruments were provided by the band for people to join in on several tunes. Although initially shy, the gathered mass soon got into the spirit with lots of waving and shaking of maracas and other noisy things

[35]

Yes, the signing went well and I’m sure we all understood most, if not all of the special movements, created to accompany the songs.

The Glamorous Girls of the Signing Choir entertained us with some great signed songs. This year someone in the hall who is deaf complimented the choir on such good work

There’s no photo here for the interruption by the Fun Singing Choir, but the start to the second half was hijacked by an impromptu version of Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer, after all the various reindeer had been hauled out of their seats to centre stage

They did it again! Last year the Signing Choir, assisted by volunteers from the audience, performed The Twelve Days of Christmas. They did it again this year and the result was just as hilarious. Each volunteer was randomly given two boards (is that a a look of sheer panic I see?), each with a picture representing one of the twelve days. The task, once they accepted the mission, was to hold the right board up at the right point in the song. I think you can guess what happened… (no, the boards did not self destruct ten seconds later) [36]

Help and support for people who care According to the last census, there are 47,608 people in Wiltshire providing care and support to a relative, child, partner or friend who would not be able to manage on their own. There are many reasons why someone may not be able to cope unaided including physical or mental disability, old age, long-term illness, special educational need, eating disorder or a problem with drugs or alcohol.

It is estimated that 3 in 5 people will become a carer at some point in their lives. The problem is that most people will not identify themselves as such – people simply consider themselves as a spouse, sibling, parent, grandparent or friend doing what they would be doing anyway. Many also mistake the word ‘carer’ with those providing paid care work in a residential home or domiciliary agency capacity.

Carer Support Wiltshire is a charity with a team of support workers who can provide information and support to carers living in Wiltshire, at the other end of the telephone, or face to face, along with accessing to counselling and advice relating to your role. All of our services are free and confidential for anyone aged 18 and over and we can offer you the chance to have a break through social cafés, days out, activities, craft groups and complementary therapies. We will shortly be running a monthly carers cafés in nearby Marlborough where you can come along to chat with other carers over a hot drink or two. To find out more about us, or to register for some support, please visit our website www.carersinwiltshire.co.uk, email info@carersinwiltshire.co.uk or freephone: 0800 181 4118 (01 380 871 690 from a mobile).
