This buyer was delighted to find a cello for sale and others sorted through books at a stall outside the Fire Shed. The stall and 20 other sites in and around Captains Flat offered everything from a super spreader to homemade biscuits and jams. Another beautiful Spring day greeted bargain hunters at the 4th Annual Captains Flat Community Garage Sale last Saturday. As usual, there were plenty of households keen to part with a variety of items, with everything from musical instruments to farm equipment on offer. Two households in Harolds Cross had a particularly good day, as did a couple in the ‘Flat itself, who commented on the number of visitors from out of town as well as the amount of smaller items being snapped up. The saying, ‘one man’s trash is another’s treasure’ certainly rang true on the day! But the overall feeling was that people were not as keen to part with their hard-earned cash compared with previous years and there were some hard bargains negotiated as a result. Offerings of food and local produce however, always do well and this year was no exception.
There were a number of garage sales offering free range eggs, homemade jams as well as a variety of baked goods and sweet treats; I have it on good authority that the red velvet cake at garage sale 14 was divine! Once again, the Captains Flat Rural Fire Service tempted people with the BBQ at the map collection point. And, the Plaza Theatre Café kept visitors satisfied with takeaway coffees and somewhere to rest their weary feet. Plenty of locals took their time to shop for bargains and commented on how much they had enjoyed the day and the chance to meet new neighbours. Proof enough that the Community Garage Sale is as much about building and supporting the community of Captains Flat as giving people an outlet to recycle their unwanted goods. We look forward to doing it again in 2015! Kerenza Brown
Become 'Fit for the Future Press Release The NSW Minister for Local Government, Paul Toole, last week announced the Government's long-awaited response to the Independent Local Government Review Panel's comprehensive report on the future of local government in NSW.
The response contains a number of recommendations to make councils 'fit for the future' so that they can meet the needs of growing and changing communities. The Government has funding to assist in implementing the recommendations, with $258m for councils C5

C4 which decide to merge, and $5.3m for setting up new Joint Organisations. In addition, 'fit for the future' councils will have access to cheaper loans to help fund local infrastructure, more flexibility with procurement and simplified reporting, access to a streamlined process for setting rates, and eligibility for additional planning powers. Every council must submit a proposal to the Government by 30 June 2015, outlining their plans to become 'fit for the future'. Councils will need to demonstrate how they will become and remain sustainable, provide effective and efficient services, and develop the scale and capacity to partner with the State to meet the needs of their communities into the future. One of the recommendations in the Government's response is a merger of

Palerang and Queanbeyan City Councils. Palerang Council's Mayor, Cr Pete Harrison, said that Council does not currently feel that such a merger would be in the best interests of its community. "Palerang residents should seriously consider the implications of such a proposal, as its stated primary purpose is to strengthen Queanbeyan as a regional centre. There's very little comment on how the merger would provide any direct benefit to Palerang residents," said Cr Harrison. "However, we remain open to all possibilities and, as always, we will be seeking the best outcome for our constituents. There are many factors to consider and we will have the necessary conversations as we move forward in our own efforts to become 'fit for the future'," he added.
EACH WEEK THE MIRROR IS DISTRIBUTED TO 5.500 MAIL POINTS THROUGHOUT THE WESTERN PART OF THE PALERANG COUNCIL AREA
