Defining Style “ MOST OF MY STUFF IS TRANSITIONAL, WITH SOME TRADITIONAL. I AM INTO MODERN AND I HAVE RECENTLY ADDED A FEW PIECES, BUT TODAY I FEEL LIKE I WANT SOMETHING ECLECTIC.”

LATELY, my shopping experiences have been very unsuccessful. Mainly because I can’t define my personal style. On a recent shopping trip, my personal statement to the salesclerk went a little something like this...“Most of my stuff is transitional, with some traditional. I am really into modern now and I have recently added a few piece, but today I feel like I want something eclectic.” Really, I have said nothing. Usually after a failure to communicate, I put my name on a list with the sales clerk and go home and descend on a week long Google search that leaves me sleep deprived and defeated. Perhaps the reason is because most people can’t be defined by outdated terms. Simply put, we need more adjectives. The internet has revolutionized design and fortunately styles like Hollywood Regency, Scandinavian and Mid-Century Modern have become more secular over the years, but has left room for a new interpretation of style. As a member of Generation X, I am finally on board with the Millennials, Boomlets and forward thinking members of other generations that have identified their style with word-mix and the #hashtag to define my style. Some of my favorites in 2014, #newbohemian, #preppyvintage and #tribalchic. In 2015 how will you #defineyourstyle?

Best,

Lesley Busby Weaver

T

O SAY THAT TRAVEL INFLUENCES STYLE is a paradox. Ask, Candice DePrang and she will tell you, it defines it. When Candice, owner of Oh! Fox Creative and her husband Trevor Boehm, co-founder of Pay with Penny, found their cozy, 960—square feet home in East Austin, it needed to support their love for travel.”Traveling almost every month nationally or internationally means we simply own less. We spend our money on experiences, not things,” says DePrang. When it comes to style the couple has chosen to be personal and intentional drawing from collective quintessential expeditions. Hotels, apartments in Belgium and even the comfort of a relative’s guest room became the foundation from, which the couple chose to build their home. DePrang and Boehm love their home because of the light, space and colors, but getting there was a challenge. “More information and styles exist on ‘inspiration’ websites than can ever exist in one home,” DePrang recalls. So she called in reinforcements. A friend, who is a designer, helped them to define their style, create a palette and added a platform bed to maximize the space. After living in the space and understanding how it should function to meet their needs another designer helped complete their creation. “Two heads truly are better than one with interior design—someone can affirm your choices, while another encourage your style and also guide the larger vision.” The result is a completed space highlighted with memories and comfort. Just the way they like it.

What is your personal design aesthetic?

Beautiful and comfortable. Some days I wish I could execute a more bohemian style, but the truth is that I love clean lines and open spaces. What do you think are the best pieces to bring back from travels?

Textiles always. If you don’t use them, you can give them away. “No one has ever told me ‘no’ when I have given them a beautiful rug from my latest adventure!” But if the piece fits as perfectly in your home as you thought it would on your journey, you’ll never forget the place. Other favorite finds include leather bags – any size, any shape – and strong jewelry pieces. I buy jewelry on almost every trip, even little weekend getaways to New York, to remind myself of the adventure. Framed maps and travel photographs serve as art.

KITCHEN: This 1979 kitchen remained untouched until Sean Paben took on his first renovation with a little help from his wife Emily.

A

SK THE PABEN FAMILY FOR ADJECTIVES to describe their kitchen and you will hear warm, comfortable, elegant and unpretentious. Last March, when Sean and Emily Paben decided to renovate their kitchen, the self described design enthusiasts, sought to create a space that was an extension of their home, not just a place to cook. Up for the challenge, Sean tackled the project independently, except he outsourced the floors and had a little help from Emily. As he replaced the untouched 1970’s interior it proved to be a laborious task to select materials from the Internet. Budget conscious, the Pabens sacrificed in some areas to splurge in others. Thankfully they shared a common design aesthetic. Although not married to one particular style, they tended to gravitate to traditional designs. “We like to mix it up, not sticking too closely to a specific era or tone,” says Emily.

SEAN PABEN

The ability to design spaces may come naturally given their creative backgrounds. Scott is the director of development for Midwest Textile Co. and Emily is one of the creators behind Kindred Event studio, an event planning company. Open shelves, lacquered cabinets and DIY lighting were mixed n’ matched with stone, wood and metals. Not discriminators of styles, the Pabens tried to strike a balance between influences. Rather than create a conventional breakfast nook, the couple constructed a sitting room where they could relax. “We got a lot of perplexed looks from people when we mentioned that the settee was going in the kitchen but we use it every day, it’s where we have our morning coffee,” recalls Paben. A settee anchors the other side of the kitchen and is flanked by sconces, side tables and a wallpaper mural. When completed, what can’t be disputed is the success of the renovation. The Pabens’ creation, which abandoned the rules, oozes style and is simply fun.

OPPOSITE: “We love all of the wood and marble. The hex tile has turned out even greater than we anticipated,” says Paben. BELOW: The couple mixed high and low and antiques with modern elements, such as subway tile and sleek hardware.

IGHT FILLS THE RANCH-STYLE home of John and Brooke Inabnett, real estate attorney and interior stylist, respectively. The house, tucked in a neighborhood just north of Preston Hollow, merges tradition with the couple’s desire for function and eclectic design in an idealistic setting. “We don’t get out much,” says Brooke as her daughters Blaire, two, and Sloane, one, shriek with excitement at the first sign of a guest. But, who would want to when their home from curbside exudes ‘young Dallas family’ and inside features a mix of extraordinary finds. Family heirlooms and interesting art speaks to vogue sophistication thanks to Brooke’s knack for designing spaces by combining already existing pieces with new purchases. Brooke and John were first drawn to the open spaces and potential in the 1950’s home. Nearly four years later, the Inabnetts realized their vision with amazing room transformations The couple’s favorite space is the office. chic and androgynous workspace. Brooke and John’s juxtaposed design decision face off across the room. His contribution is a hidden pocket door that provides direct access to the kitchen. Her signature is the high gloss black lacquer double doors with brass knobs—an unexpected solution that delivers perfectly. The Inabnetts do not shy away from statement-makers. Proof of this is seen in the space where the family shares meals —underneath a golden hand-blown glass light fixture that Brooke and John snagged on their Hawaiian honeymoon. “You have to find the right piece and sometimes it takes a little bit of time, but until then you work with what you have,” says Brooke. The couple’s patience and precision have yielded a beautiful home that reveals the character of the owners, as well as their history, shared journey and who they are as a family.

GEM IN A SEA OF REBUILDS, the only, thing Jenny and Loren Koziol’s three-bedroom 1951 Preston Hollow bungalow needed was a dose of decor. The functional floor plan, good bones and hardwood floors appealed to the couple. There was no question about where Jenny and Loren would start shopping. Jenny, an SMU graduate, is the owner of Uptown Country Home, an upcycle furniture store that operates online and via a booth at the Richardson Mercantile. If Jenny looks familiar, it’s either because you’re one of the many who frequented her former storefront in Snider Plaza, or you caught her on A&E’s reality show Storage Wars: Texas. And, reality it was. Except for a few family heirlooms, almost everything in the home is from a storage or estate sale or trash find. Each piece is transformed to fit Jenny’s shabby chic style and usually includes a coat of pink or turquoise paint. The feminine touches are no problem for Loren. The financial advisor is colorblind—a more-than-ironic point when you consider Jenny’s favorite colors are nothing short of feminine. The only room in the house without pink is Loren’s sports room—he hates the term man room—where the two collaborated. “This house is perfect for our family right now,” says Jenny. The bungalow’s interior is truly a creation that emerged from two vintage enthusiasts. Personality radiates from every wall and the couple acquired and transformed the hardwood floors, furniture, art, lighting and décor with continuous searches, creativity, and a little elbow grease.

NURSERY: Jenny’s tendency toward pink was challenged when baby Thompson arrived in October. She used a china cabinet in lieu of a bookshelf. The daybed was created with a King-sized headboard and twin mattress. Pillows are from Etsy.

MASTER BEDROOM: The side tables and light fixture are finds from an Arteriors warehouse sale.

SPORTS ROOM: “He’s clearly the collector too,” Jenny says of Loren. Almost every inch of the walls are covered by sports memorabilia. They even had to take the doors off of the closet to create more wall space.

O ACCOMMODATE THEIR LOVE FOR entertaining and the outdoors, Michael and Brittany Coggins extended their indoor space to the outside. The mid-century home in the Northwood Hills section of North Dallas blends modern with Southern impressions that speak to the Coggins’ Louisiana roots. It is a continuous gathering place for friends and family. In fusing the internal and external designs the couple combines glamorous touches, a low-maintenance xeriscape lawn and porch swing. As owners of Landmark Design, an outdoor light company, Brittany relied on Michael’s design background to create the backyard. He divided the space into five zones. Inside, natural elements, an open floor plan and sky-light supports the perception of a seamless environment and makes it difficult to distinguish between the spaces.

BACKYARD: “We love the warmness of it. It is so inviting and really feels like an extension of our home,” says Brittany. The outdoor rooms are perfect for entertaining day or night. LANDSCAPING: The backyard was designed by Ironwood Landscaping and the lighting is by Landmark Design.

The stone fireplace captures a pastoral outdoorsy feel while the large windows off the foyer draw in natural light. Each space flows into another. Both the dining and family rooms are paired with decor that has a contemporary flair. A rustic wooden table and shells are paired with bright colors, metallic trays, casted console and shag. “We love the sharp, geometric lines and shapes of the modern style, portrayed in colors and textures,” says Brittany. Outside, a favorite section features a television set and grill area for watching games and cooking, but also embraces an intimate seating space with a cozy fire table, a pergola area with intentional seating, a play space for their daughter and the sweet porch swing. “The swing isn’t exactly something we pulled from the interior but it is something we wanted to incorporate to soften the modern feel with a touch of southern charm,” explains Brittany. It reminds us of the front porch swings so common in our native Louisiana and swinging during the summer evenings is a memory I wanted to pass down to our growing family.”
