A note from the Director
Recently, while reading Art Guide Australia, I came across the quote ‘..art is a space for thought, action, and hope’ by artist Janet Laurence. This quote was in response to a question posed about what role art can possibly play during this current time of great environmental threat. I considered this statement in context of the role our Gallery plays and what we offer to our community. My mind first went to the gallery-curated Savour exhibition, and its message to slow down and savour the artworks. On average, viewers spend just 17 seconds in front of an artwork in a gallery. Is this enough time for a thought to develop or for a viewer to truly engage with art? This exhibition turns the gallery itself into an experience, with seating in front of the artworks, accompanying audio elements, and a comfortable space to entice visitors to think about the artwork in front of them and to truly let it engage with their senses. It also celebrates the time that the artists take to create their work, from the months of weaving involved in Dylan Sarra’s fish sculpture, through to the detailed stage setting evident in Marian Drew’s photographs. So are we a space for action? Certainly, the artist Hadie MacLeod hopes that her crocheted artworks in Reef Gems and Coral Roses will encourage us to take action against the environmental hazards impacting our reefs. With her delicate textiles, Macleod draws in the viewer, but then challenges them to see past the beauty of the artwork and engage with the political message that lies within. This is also so for the Imaginarts exhibition Place Invaders, on loan from State Archives. While taking on the guise of an 80s arcade game, this interactive exhibit challenges us to think about the impact of introduced species on our environment. Hope springs eternal in The Vault with Emma Thorp’s Invested. This animation, beautiful in its illustrations, envelopes the viewer and takes them on a journey led by Thorp’s winged creature. The viewer is encouraged to sit on the grassed floor and let the film play around the walls and in fact, over them, so that they become part of the installation. Once again, the experiential nature of the exhibition encourages the viewer to stay in the space and engage on a higher level with the artwork. So yes, ‘art is a space for though, action, and hope’, and although I have only touched on a few key points within our upcoming schedule, I am sure as you read through this edition of the gallery booklet, you too will be reminded of the important role that the arts play in our lives and in our broader community, and be encouraged to join us for the upcoming exhibitions and events. Reef Gems and Coral Roses Hadie MacLeod
11 March - 9 May Reef Gems and Coral Roses is a collection of works by Hadie MacLeod, inspired by her experiences snorkelling in some of our amazing local and farflung coral reefs: from Bargara to Lady Elliott and Lady Musgrave Islands, to Heron Island and Indonesia’s Krakatoa. Hadie’s work reflects the beauty of the reef in wearable crochet art. Her rings, necklaces and other flotsam and jetsam dazzle and distract – with the shapes of corals and other reef animals. Some of these works are brightly coloured – some look bleached – a sign of the damage being done to the reef and our oceans from our world-wide pollution. Outside the reef, mountains of plastic threaten and entangle sea creatures.

Savour
Marian Drew, John Honeywill, Linde Ivimey, Dylan Sarra & Chloe Smith + artworks from the Bundaberg Regional Galleries’ Collection
10 April - 20 June Savour is an exhibition about slowing down and savouring the art. On average, gallery visitors spend just 17 seconds looking at each artwork. This exhibition encourages viewers to take their time and spend an extended period in front of an artwork, exploring the individual sensations and emotions that the image evokes. In a nod to the Slow Food Movement, each artwork in Savour is inspired by food, the act of eating, or what remains after the feast. Food, like art, is often so much about the personal resonance, which can be complex or subtle, but always evocative. Savour is a whole gallery experience, grounded in highlighting the sensations, knowledge, and emotions of the viewer.

Slow Art Day is a global event with a simple mission: help more people discover for themselves the joy of looking at and loving art. On this day, people all over the world visit local museums and galleries to look at art slowly. Participants look at five works of art for 10 minutes each and then talk about their experience. That’s it. Simple by design, the goal is to focus on the art and the art of seeing. On this International Slow Art Day, take the time to join us at the Gallery to discover art slowly alongside the artists who created it.

In the Shed Creative Regions 10 April - 20 June In the Shed, curated by Creative Regions, is a celebration of that humble structure found in backyards and fields across regional Queensland, and the importance it has for the men that call it theirs.
Gallery
In partnership with photographer Sabrina Lauriston, and journalist, Kallee Buchanan, Creative Regions initiated this project in Childers in 2020 and completed it in 2021 at Bargara. Its purpose was to uncover the stories that lay behind the shed doors. Alongside the rusty farm implements, half finished projects, and the odd litter of kittens, they found links to past generations, treasures from yesteryear, and men who were willing to open up about what this space meant to them.
Times
This exhibition is a culmination of that project, bringing together photographic portraits, glimpses into these inner sanctums, and audio interviews that uncover what really happens In the Shed.

Forever Memories Robert Brownhall
