Letter From The Editor The New 34th Anniversary Tour!

The new BullShooter Regional Tour is in it’s 34th year! We are currently setting up Qualifying Regionals around the U.S. There is also a tournament in the Netherlands (see the inside front cover) for those U.S. players who like to travel abroad.

Our first BullShooter Regional is in Florida. Hopefully we won’t encounter any hurricanes or severe thunderstorms that cause us to postpone the Regional like last year! That was the first time it has every happened and hopefully the last.

Green Fees!

A big change this year, the games will be on “free play” at all BullShooter Regionals! The entry fee will be $30 per person for all main events. This fee will cover “green fees”.

Friday Luck of The Draw The Friday night Luck of The Draw event will have a $20 entry fee. Broken down that is a $15 entry fee and $5 “green fee”. $500 will be added to the payout in addition to 100% of the $15 entry fee paid back to the players.

Rules Please note that our rules have stayed the same.

1. Regionals are open to all players.

Only dart manufacturers and their reps are ineligible to participate.

2. You register for events at the Regional (no pre-registration).

3. Once an open player wins 1st, 2nd, or 3rd place, he/she can only compete at future BullShooter Regionals in the three Pro events.

4. Once you qualify as a “Pro” player at a Regional, you move into that classification AFTER the next BullShooter Finals.

5. In order to receive any payout, you will have to present proper identification and social security number.

6. 20 grams is the maximum per dart that is allowed on all darts.

Violation of this rule will result in loss of game.

Regionals Qualifying Regionals have been set up in Florida, Wisconsin, South Carolina, Indiana, Pennsylvania and Tennessee. Check out the “Dart Calendar” on page 4 for the list of Regionals and dates.

We are working on six more, and will post them in the BullShooter Magazine and on our web site as soon as possible at: www.bullshooter.com Last year was a great year of darts, but I think this year will be even better! I am happy to see so many youth tournaments being set up and I look forward to reporting on them. They are our future players!

Wisconsin Dells, Wisconsin

NDA Junior Tournament The National Dart Association (NDA) held their Junior Tournament June 8-10, 2018, at the Chula Vista Resort in Wisconsin Dells, WI. To be eligible to play in the Junior Tournament, you must be 20 years old or younger, be NDA sanctioned, and have a minimum of 48 league games played for the season.

On Friday Singles Cricket and Singles ‘01 was played. Saturday Doubles Cricket and Triples was played with Doubles ‘01 finishing the tournament on Sunday.

100% of the entry fees were returned in prizes for the kids and the games were on free play. Thanks to all the players!

Dart programs throughout the country always seem to ebb and flow. Some area’s, however, seem to become and maintain the status of a true darting hotbed and the Dakotas, both North and South, are prime examples of this.

This darter is a shining example of the players they have produced. Let’s talk darts with Dion Beneke.

Dion lives in Manden, North Dakota, which is across the Missouri River from Bismarck. He and his wife, Karla, have son’s Kadin and Kellen, who are 9 and 11. He is a superintendant for Industrial Contractors. Despite a fabulous showing at BullShooter 33, Dion like so many darters told me, “I was really happy with my tournament, but I could have done better.”

Dion Beneke Pacer: It has always fascinated me how the game of darts can almost become a living thing. Many areas of the country seem to produce one great player after another, and their programs grow like Jack’s beanstalk on Miracle Grow. The growth and the quality of play in the Dakotas have been nothing short of fabulous the last several years.

Dion: The game is really popular.

The vendor’s like Dakota Music, who run our dart program, has really made the game exciting and highly competitive throughout the Dakotas.

The state tournaments are just huge, and of course now remote darts are offering more and more opportunities

for everyone from the average local darter to those who have aspirations to compete both state and nationally.

Pacer: I was at the Premier Cup in Minnesota last year. I was impressed with not only the men and women competitors from the Dakotas, but also the number of spectators who had come to cheer them on. There were entire families who had come to see the competition, and they were cheering like they were at a pro football or major league baseball game. It really was exciting!

Dion: We definitely love our darts. I think it is going to just keep growing and getting better, and I’m looking forward to being a part of it.

Pacer: Tell us Dion, how did you get involved in the game of darts?

Dion: Well, that’s a pretty easy story.

After I graduated from high school, I joined the Navy and ended up at Pearl Harbor. After I had been there a couple of years, I went in this little hole in the wall place called Momma’s and we ran into something that none of us had ever seen. There was this dart board that you put money in and throw soft tip darts at the board.

Pacer: So you had no idea there was such a thing as an electronic board.

Do you recall what year that was?

Dion: That was probably in the late 80’s. We played a little that night and then the next thing you know Momma’s was our hang out of choice.

We played a lot of darts. I got out of the Navy in ‘91. I stayed in Hawaii for a couple of years, then I headed back to North Dakota where I was born and bred.

Pacer: When you returned home, did you jump right into the game?

Dion: Actually, I kind of got caught up in working and having a family.

I really didn’t play darts for several years.

At the BullShooter Finals last May, Dion won, 1st in Men’s Singles, 1st in Top Gun Triples, 3rd place in Top Gun Men’s Singles 5th/6th in Men’s Doubles and Cricket Doubles, 7th/8th in Triples and 9th in Mixed Cricket Doubles!

Welcome to the Pro Division Dion!

I started back again about eight years ago. Now I’m really swamped at work, but I still try to find the time to hit some tournaments. My wife, Karla is kind of stuck with the kids, so I have to make sure and keep her happy and let her know how much I appreciate all that she does.

Pacer: Dion, I can’t think of a single thing that helps a player’s dart game more than a happy, supportive family at home.

Dion: Boy, is that the truth! Right now I work, get home and spend some time with the wife and kids, and then I hit the garage and pound the dart board for awhile.

There are so many talented players today and none of them like to lose.

For me to be competitive, I have to put my time in.

Pacer: Well, you must have paid your dues, because you had a great showing at BullShooter 33. You literally placed in every event you played in and had a couple victories in the top Gun Mixed Trips with Anne Quinn and Chip Anderson and the Men’s 501 Singles event. How did that strike you leaving Chicago with two World Championships in your pocket?

Dion: I really had a great weekend, but I felt it could have been better. I was playing so well in the Top Gun Singles that I just knew I would be playing in the finals, but it didn’t happen. But in this game, you have to learn to accept what happens and keep plugging away. The competition is fierce, and I don’t see it getting any easier (both laughing).

Pacer: All I can say to that is amen.

The competition today is just plain astounding!

Dion: Now no matter where you are you have the opportunity with

the remote play to compete against people from virtually everywhere.

It’s just amazing to think that a guy like me can go out in his garage and play people I have had the pleasure to meet, and for that matter people that I would never know existed without remote play. The biggest changes in the game today have to be remote play and how much social media has impacted the game.

Look at Mr. Social Media, Mike Maloney, he has literally corresponded with thousands of darters.

Pacer: Dion, one of the exciting things for me when I played was the opportunity to play with my sons once they got older. Have Kaden and Kellen shown an interest in the game?

Dion: There is a place we go to on the weekends sometimes that have the Arachnid G3 boards and I’ll play remote doubles with my boys. They think it is just so neat that we are playing people from wherever. I’ll tell you how much of a family game darts can be. For the last eight years, since I started playing again, I have teamed up with three brothers--Paul, Craig and Myron Engelhard. Tom, I also want to thank you for calling me.

This has really been an honor talking with you.

Pacer: Dion, like so many of the outstanding darters I have talked to over the years, has a good healthy outlook on the game of darts.

He told me, “I just want to stay humble and enjoy playing a game I love for as long as I can. I know all good things must come to an end, but right now I don’t see any end in sight.”

Summer Shoot Out Weekend!

On June 8-10 Variety Amusements sponsored the “Summer Shoot Out Weekend” at Shooters Lounge in Bloomington, IL Nine tournaments were held over the weekend and over $7,000 was awarded in prize money! There were over 300 entries in the events with six different states represented.

Thanks to Pat Prather, at Variety Amusements, and Glen and Scotty, owners of Shooters, for sponsoring the event. Thanks to Matt Peterson and his staff for doing an awesome job all weekend supplying drinks and food, to Katherine Buckley for handling registration, to Leroy Buckley for all the work he did over the weekend, and to Arachnid for supplying the Galaxy 3 games and running the tournament.
