Dart Players Honor Our Service Members Honoring the sacrifices of our Service members by investing in their children.

For the second season, Arachnid is collecting donations for “No Greater Sacrifice”.

No Greater Sacrifice (NGS) is a not-for-profit organization dedicated to the children of our nation’s fallen and wounded Service members.

NGS scholarships are given to the children to reduce any unmet financial costs of higher education. This includes in-state tuition, room and board, special equipent, books, etc.

The Texas BullShooter Regional was held January 5-7, 2018, at the Crown Plaza Northwest in Houston. AVS Companies co-sponsored the event.

A lot of top players competed in 11 main events with over $12,000 awarded in cash and plaques. Players came from Oklahoma, Mississippi, Kentucky, Alabama, Texas and even many players from Canada!

Dawn Washington won Women’s Singles and Women’s Doubles with Ratonda Irby. Ratonda also teamed up with Leonard Gates in Mixed

Cricket and won the championship.

Leonard also claimed the pretigious Pro Cricket Singles title, and Pro Doubles with Donnie Ramcharan.

In Pro/Am Cricket, Alex Reyes and Arturo Suarez won 1st place. Brandon Brown, Shea Cole and Andrew Robles won Mixed Triples.

In the Men’s events, Mike Alegria and Tito Martinez won 501 and Drew Musch and Nathan Ritter won Cricket. Leslie Garner and Laurie Luna captured the Women’s Doubles Combo event. Congratulations!

When I asked this darter exactly where she lived she replied, “The Lower Peninsula is shaped just like a mitten. Alma, Michigan is right in the middle of it.” Right then I knew like so many of the players I have talked to over the years, my conversation with Kathy Middleton would be fun, interesting and informative.

Kathy lives in Alma with her husband Rob. They have four children, sons Zac, Gage and Chase and daughter Tristen. They range from 8 to 23 years old.

For the past 25 years, she has been a CNA specializing in Home Health Care.

Pacer: Kathy, I can’t tell you how many times I have contacted someone who is totally new to me and I am amazed how easy they are to talk to.

Kathy: I’ll be honest, I was really nervous about being in Pacer’s Page, but once we started talking, it was like, this isn’t bad, maybe I can do this (both laughing).

Pacer: When I talk to someone I don’t know, I feel like I have an ace in the hole. I feel like we have both played and fell in love with the game of darts and it seems to be a pretty good hole card.

Kathy: Really, I’m having fun talking with you, it’s really nice. I went

back and read a few of your articles and it was like...I think I can do this.

Pacer: Well, let’s get to the question that I ask everyone I interview, just how did Kathy Middleton get interested in the game of darts?

Kathy: My husband was stationed at the Whidbey Island Naval Base.

Every Wednesday night we, and a bunch of his Navy buddies, would go to a club and throw darts. Honestly, I never even knew the game existed, but I thought if Rob likes to do this I better give it a try. He had to show me everything.

Pacer: What were your first impressions of the game?

Kathy: Well, I remember I was terrible (both laughing). The first dart I threw didn’t even hit the board! I was like, oh boy, now what. It was really just fun and games until we moved back home. Then about ten years ago we got on a Wednesday Night League in Lansing and started working at it and taking it a little more seriously.

Rob really taught me well, and now he is sometimes home with the kids while I am off at a tournament somewhere playing darts. I think I’m pretty lucky.

Pacer: I can’t tell you how many players have flat out told me what they have been able to accomplish is directly related to the support they have from family and friends. You really can’t put a value on it. And on the flip side, I have known some awfully good shooters who walked away from the game, because they didn’t have that support. One young guy who was full of potential, just told me, “Tom I had to decide--darts or marriage.” Kathy when did tournament play become a part of your game?

Kathy: Well, about three years ago we started playing some tournaments at the local VFW in Alma, and then I went to the Darts For Dogs Tournament, in Ohio, and I was amazed. All the boards and players

and there were some players there that I had actually seen on TV. I was like, wow! Then I started going to the Ohio BullShooter Regional, and now it is a yearly event where a bunch of us Michigan players make a trip to Ohio every year. It’s always a great tournament. I don’t really know what is the best part, the fun or the competition! Every year it seems like you make more and more friends and you’re either competing or rooting someone else on. It is just plain a lot of fun.

Pacer: The BullShooter Regionals have become an annual tradition for thousands of darters across the country. Though they are great tournaments in themselves, many darters travel to them with a bigger prize in mind...a trip to the big dance in Chicago. You have made that trip the last couple of years.

Kathy: A couple of years ago I had a great weekend and really had a wonderful time.

Pacer: You won the Women’s Monster’s of the Midway team event with Sandra Erdman, Marin Uhinck and Nicole Hedrick. You won a 1st in Women’s 301 Doubles with Sandra and a 2nd in Women’s Cricket Doubles again with Sandra. The past year you moved up to Women’s A and you and Sandra took a 3rd in 501 Doubles and you and Gregory Strand and Eric Hill took a 4th in the Mixed Trips.

Not bad for a girl who couldn’t hit the board (both laughing).

Kathy: It was really a great, great time. I mean when were playing in the Cricket Doubles finals, Sandra and I were playing against girls from France and Spain. We couldn’t understand each other, but it was an awesome experience. Of course when you get in the finals you want to win it all, but it was a good match and an unforgetable experience.

Pacer: The BullShooter truly is a World Tournament and you never know what country your next match may be with. It really makes it a special tournament. You credit your husband Rob with getting you interested in the game. Is there any other players you would like to mention?

Kathy: Sandra Erdman has been a wonderful partner. We have picked each other up so many times that we just expect it to happen. We are really comfortable playing together, and I hope we have a few more wins left in us. I have been shooting quite a bit with Steve Strand, who is also a great partner. Also, my 20 year old son Gage can’t wait to turn 21 and jump into the game. He is really excited about playing, and he really wants to experience everything that the game has to offer.

Pacer: Young people all over the world are becoming darters and I think that bodes well for the game’s future. Who knows, you may be raising your own dart partner.

Kathy: Well, I’ll tell you it is getting to be that momma has to play awful well or her son is kicking her butt!

Really, it is great to see him playing so good and really taking an interest in the game. Also, I want to thank Melody Music, who runs local tournaments and money leagues in our area, and Motor City Entertainment gave us a board so we can qualify for TOC in Kansas City this year. Really all of this has been pretty amazing, and hopefully I can be a part of it for a long time. It has been awesome to have the opportunity to even say I’ve had the chance to meet and compete against so many wonderful people.

Pacer: Talking to Kathy was like talking to an old friend. She couldn’t have been any nicer or more cheerful.

I also got the impression that she was telling the gospel truth when she says that the moral support that she gets from her family and friends means the world to her. I think that could be a lesson for a lot of darters. It’s a lot easier to keep going forward with someone behind you.

New Years Morning Blind Draw Tournament On January 1, 2018, a New Years Morning Blind Draw Dart Tournament took place at Coins Sports Bar in Kenosha, Wisconsin.

There was a good turnout with 128 entries and everyone had a great time! Thanks to all the players for coming out to the 13th annual tournament! The tournament was a huge success.

The Indiana Regional was held January 19-21, 2018, at the Wyndham Indianapolis West. The event was co-sponsored by Shaffer Distributing.

Players came from Indiana, Ohio, Illinois, Kentucky and Michigan to compete for $12,000 in prize money and Qualifying Cards to the BullShooter.

Ron Jacobs and Jamie Payne won Men’s Doubles 501 and Ron also won Men’s Singles Cricket. Ben Phares won Pro Cricket Singles and Mixed Triples with Randy Fern and Crystal Wagnor.

In the Pro events, Jeremiah Millar and Ray Carver won Pro Men’s Doubles 501 and Jeremiah teamed up with Steve Price in Pro/Am Cricket for another 1st place win.

In the women’s events, Jennifer Carpenter won Women’s Singles, Sally Frank and Ally McQueen won Women’s Doubles 301, and Julie Weger and Dawn Hoye won Women’s Combo.

Men’s Cricket Doubles was won by Ron Mathews and Steve May and Mary Collins and Jeff Cohee won Mixed Cricket Doubles. Congratulations!

Staff Amusements Fall 2017 Leagues Staff Music and Amusements, located in Hanover, PA, wrapped up yet another exciting season of dart leagues.

Banquets were held at The Cove, in York, PA; The Pike Restaurant and Lounge, in Gettysburg, PA; and O’Brien’s Paradise Cove, in Abbotstown, PA. Good times were shared by all of our shooters as they enjoyed buffet dining, beverages, raffles, luck of the draw tournaments and awards ceremonies.
