“Mom, forgive me for becoming an adult” – this is a line from a song that every Ukrainian knows and can sing. In simple terms, it is about what is most important! The author of this line is guided by this principle, and with each song he creates a favorite hit for singing. Despite a busy touring schedule, Andriy Kuzmenko manages to appear in various television shows, write books, love his wife, raise his daughter, and travel the world. He found the time to share with us his memories and thoughts about childhood, about his fears, hopes, philosophy of creativity – and even to tell us a recipe for a delicious spicy dish.

When I was three years old, I had had a guitar that was a fretboard attached to a baseboard, made from plywood. My dad and I made it together. I colored the strings with a marker, I scratched on it with my nails and sang...for some reason “Chervona Ruta” (a Ukrainian folk song).

The taste of childhood…

Perhaps even until now I find cabbage rolls to be the most delicious. First my grandmother, then my mother made fantastic cabbage rolls stuffed with potatoes served with a mushroom gravy. It’s like a drug! You will forget your name, you will lose control of your arms and legs. You will feel as if someone gave you an epidural. You eat and do not know what’s going on, you know that after each cabbage roll you become 2-3 kilograms heavier, but you keep stuffing them down. These cabbage rolls are cooked only once a year for Christmas… I want Christmas.

Fears

People, something paradoxical happened. My whole life I told people I was not afraid of death, but afraid of war. And war has come to us. I don’t want to get into this because these words are

falling like rocks and no one will be able to move them...it’s hard for everyone now…very sad.

First love

Liudka...I will not say her last name...Or I will: Liudka Kulbychka! My first kiss was with her. I remember how we shut her grandmother in the kitchen, and then we prepared for our first lovemaking.

Extreme

I had some extreme experiences when I was hosting а television program called SHYKANEMO. The participant is supposed to do some extreme challenges (paragliding, bungee jumping, etc.) When the camera pointed at me and someone, according to the script, asked me “And how about you?” Well of course shaming myself before the whole country would be unethical, untactical, unstrategic, so I had go, jump, fly.

But to be honest you have to think with your head. So last year when I broke a record on skis...I’m speeding at 92 kilometers per hour and understand that I am an unmanaged piece of meat that sweeps from the top and is ready to take down everything and everyone in his path and injure myself, and at this moment your inner voice starts to whisper “Moron! Calm down” and for good reason.

Travels

It’s easier to list the countries that I haven’t visited: Australia, New Zealand, and South America.

I have been basically everywhere else. The most exotic have been Iceland, Spitsbergen, and probably Japan. People! Honestly! All those who travel to Egypt, for example, every year, and for fifteen years in a row, stop! There are so many interesting places!

You cannot even imagine. You need to open a map and travel to some other parts of the world.

People

People are very different. When I was traveling from the Dominican Republic to Haiti...until now I am thankful that the borderguards warned me that there is cannibalism. І saw how the eyes of the borderguards on the Haitian side lit up, how their lips smacked... good thing I didn’t risk going there.

The Japanese for example are very benevolent, they want to help you, but not knowing the language you can’t understand each other. They will smile, hug you, and so 40 minutes of no help – just lost time ... but with good people and this is good!

Family nest

Yes! I made money on it, but did not build it, to be honest. I was there about three times

as it was being built. My wife organized everything. With God’s help the construction went well, and we managed to earn money off of it. But I didn’t have time to feel the money in my hands. It quickly changed into sand, concrete, furniture, and the house was ready. But I see even the 280 meters that we have is too much. Because there are places in the house where I don’t go for months.

House of dreams

House of dreams... the one that we were able to build. But if you dig deeper, I would say I would like to move the house to the Ligurian islands, so that in the mornings I could step outside in my boxers, cast my fishing rod into the sea ... and quietly catch some flounder – to meet every day like this.

Songs about what is most important...

This is a very juicy topic for me. At first I couldn’t write songs in Ukrainian.

I wrote only in English. But when he heard the band Braty Hadiukiny and later VV, I began to write in my mother tongue and discovered something new, but at the same time my own. But it was 1980s Polish music that left its mark on me intellectually. This is why my band Skryabin was not able to assimilate into the show business crowd. The imagery of the Poles’ texts was something completely different from what was popular here, so we had to learn Russian popular culture: Mumiy Troll, Zemfira, Splean. I found parallels between what I did in the past and what was worth going to compete in the market. Thus appeared clear images, which each person associates with the songs “Stari Fotohrafiyi” (Old Photos), “Liudy Yak Korabli” (People Like Ships), “Movchaty” (Silence), “Mama.”

In simple terms, its about complicated things...

Your team

Since 2000 the band members have been the same. And I am happy about this.

Every year we travel over 120,000-130,000 kilometers together across Ukraine and beyond. If people were sick of each other, there would have been gnawed bodies with bleeding wounds. But everything goes smoothly. We play music together, not try to interpretate relations. And that’s what’s most important.

Friendship

There are people who are close to me.

But those whom I considered friends once have disappeared. And now I would probably not risk calling those good people in my life friends so as not to risk the trauma of losing them again. Maybe it’s selfish, but I say it like it is. Indeed. When you become a little more visible than your colleagues, there are many hidden emotions...including jealousy...unfortunately. So I built myself a world of comfortable people of around 30 people. And no one else can enter that circle.

His books: “Me, ‘Pobeda,’ and Berlin» and “Me, Pate, and the Army”

My books, they are writings to be read while sitting on the toilet. These are autobiographical opuses. Someone called it belletristic. “Me, Pobeda and Berlin” even won second place in some Ukrainian books contest. I don’t do not consider myself a writer.

If you want to laugh, get a copy. A person on the road can listen to it on his music player and kill time. But there is nothing lofty or philosophical in those books.

Talent or hard work

Having talent, a loafer won’t leave the house and will die with his talent, having achieved nothing in life. But work polishes one’s personality and hones one skills. If you have the talent and passion, then you are much more likely to find yourself in this world and thrive. Therefore, people! Get to work.

Golda Meir:

the Kyivan, Who Founded Israel In youth, death kept watch over her from several sides. First, it was the constant hunger, when practically each spoon of porridge had to be fought for. Second, the antiSemites, who spared neither children nor the old, killed the Jews en masse, scaring the little girl too. It was a miracle that she survived – for her five brothers and sisters didn’t. Perhaps, her childhood and poor life became a good challenge for her, because they just hardened the woman’s temper and made her self-confident. Later on, illwishers had many names for her: “Bismarck in a Skirt,” “Iron Lady,” “the best man in government.” Despite all of this, the Prime Minister of Israel and one of its founders, Golda Meir persistently went after her goal and achieved it. Though, for this she had to go to all lengths: take lovers, be good at weapons, plant trees in the desert. Probably, the most interesting fact, unknown to many, is that “the Golden Girl” was born and spent her first years of life in Kyiv, Ukraine.

“One picture hasn’t faded from my memory one bit: I’m crying in the kitchen, watching how my mother is feeding my sister Zipke some spoons of porridge – porridge that was mine by right! At that time, porridge was a real luxury for us, and it was very painful for me to share it even with the child. Later I got to know what it felt like when your own children are hungry and what it was for a mother to decide who should get more; but at that time, in the kitchen in Kyiv, I only knew that life was rough and that there was no justice in the world.”

Such memories about her own childhood the Prime Minister of Israel Golda Meir left in her book.

She was born into the family of a poor Kyivan carpenter and lived not far from the Besarabsky Market, in a wooden house that miraculously stayed standing. The family was constantly stricken because it could not withstand the cold and disease, five children died and only three survived. Among the lucky ones was the heroine of our story.

For Golda’s parents Moshe and Bluma, Kyiv became one of the ports, where their little family ship moored in bad weather. They both settled there out of need rather than by choice, since life in a big city was considered to be easier.

At least there they could hide from anti-Semites and earn a living. However, they met much farther away – in Pinsk.

There, Moshe served in the army and when he met Bluma, he understood that the meeting was fateful, for he couldn’t pass up the beauty with fiery red hair. Soon, the couple was married and gave birth to children. It seemed that they were the happiest couple in the world. But romantic feelings dissipated very quickly, since the capital of Ukraine didn’t welcome them warmly.

The city was famous for its anti-Semitism, and in its hostility toward Jews it took, perhaps, first place in the Russian Empire. Of course, all hopes to get a good job were dashed, since no one wanted to employ a worker with “mud blood.” For long months, the couple were immersed in the abyss of hunger and cold. Brown bread and herring became their staple. In addition to this was the constant pregnancy

of Bluma, who gave birth to child after child.

They cried loudly, wanted to eat, and died, because it was impossible to survive in such conditions. On April 21, 1898, their sixth child was born – a girl, who was named Golda, which means golden. Probably the couple wanted to let a bright ray of sunshine into their kingdom of darkness.

Golda’s first two years passed more or less fine. At that time, her mother was feeding a neighbors’ child with her own milk and they repaid with food. When the boy grew up, there was no need for the Jewish wet-nurse.

The family again went hungry. Because of underfeeding, the elder sister Sheyna was constantly losing consciousness, and the

very Golda was shedding tears when she saw that her portion of porridge was being given to her sister Zipke. But probably even this wasn’t the worst of it, because another thing was even more mortifying – constant Jewish pogroms (mob attacks). Drunken gangs of anti-Semites were raging, beating, and crippling people on streets, and breaking into their houses. Moshe understood that it couldn’t be like this any longer and decided to go to America to make some money. There, he settled in, earned some money, and in three years took his family across the ocean. And so the 8-year-old Golda ended up in the United States. It was a completely different world – and after all those horrors it was embraced.

At that time, anti-Jewish sentiments increased in the world. First of all, it concerned Russia and Ukraine, where the Jews were blamed for espionage and treason in favor of Austro-Hungary. Hundreds of thousands of the Jews started to emigrate, the government flooded them out of their homes and destroyed their houses. To save their lives, the Jews escaped, but they didn’t have any place to go, because America wasn’t boundless and other countries didn’t want to host them. There was a big scandal in England: people, who were saved, were driven into a ship with sticks. Golda Meir couldn’t watch all of this so she joined the struggle for the establishment of a state and the protection of people with renewed energy. She traveled all over the world, didn’t sleep at night, and smoked a pack of strong cigarettes every day. As a result she was called “the golden girl of the Zionist movement” at one of the meetings.

Fifteen years later the girl finished school, entered a teachers’ college, got married to an emigrant, and joined the ranks of the Workers of Zion party. At that time America was like the Promised Land for the Jews. Five-storied buildings seemed to be skyscrapers, and trams, bikes, lemonade, and ice cream turned it into another planet. Of course, pogroms in America were out of the question unlike in Kyiv. In a short time Moshe earned some money and opened his own grocery store where his children found work. At that time only one fact made Golda’s life miserable: her parents wanted Golda to marry a much older businessman against her will. She rebelled to the bitter end, and finally she went to Denver to live with her sister. There she got married with a talented musician Morris Meyerson, who arrived to America from Lithuania.

However, changes took place not only in her private life. In Europe World War I was in full swingt, and the Zionists sought permission from the British Government to form a Jewish Legion to free Palestine from the Turks. They hoped to establish their own state, which they had been dreaming about for centuries.

Golda Meir didn’t stand aside either – she actively participated in that movement. Moreover, along with a group of volunteers she decided to immigrate to the historical Motherland of her ancestors! Her husband thought it was a crazy idea, because their life in America had improved and he didn’t want to go to a desert. Poor Morris didn’t even suspect that as soon their family’s life ship would leave the harbor, it would pile up on the rocks, because nobody could persuade Golda. “I don’t know whether I should be glad or sad that you became such a hardline nationalist. I discern no difference where to live in misery: in Russia or in the Holy Land,” he said.

Actually, the Arabs met the first visitors with hostility; the unfavorable and inhospitable weather also didn’t encourage optimism: burning sun, absence of trees, and a lot of flies. The Jews established a few settlements and started to do hard work.

Golda became an object of jokes, because everyone knew that being well educated, she had never done manual work. To make their life more cheerful, her husband and she colored their room with flowers and loudly listened to a gramophone, which they brought from America. It was their only pleasure for many years.

Her husband didn’t like such a life tyle, the couple grew more and more apart, and in 1930 the family split up.

It seemed that Golda ignored the divorce with Morris. At that time she had other priorities and family wasn’t in the first place.

In order for her dream about an independent Israel to come true, she had to become close to the powerful. As a result she got a new nickname: “Lady of the Mattress.” In that way ill-wishers clearly hinted at how Golda Meir achieved her results. The enemies were shooting their arrows, but her dream was finally fulfilled. In May 1948 the United Nations Organization proclaimed the division of Palestine and the creation of Israel. The new state was born to the accompaniment of the national anthem Hatikvah and Golda’s sobs.

The Jews finally had a right to return to their native land. Golda Meir and leaders of the Zionist movement understood that first of all they had to organize an army for protection, but there was a lack of funds. The woman went abroad again and gathered donations.

In just over three months she collected a huge amount for that time: 50 million dollars. The young state bought rifles, ammunition, and tanks for that money. Israel began to defend its territories and that procedure was led by the Kyivan.

After all, she had a spectacular career: she became the Ambassador to Russia, Minister of Labor, Foreign Minister, and finally the Prime Minister of her nation and became the only woman to head a state in the world.

She died in 1978 and her last words were: “I didn’t choose my career. I didn’t choose my occupation. It just happened so.” In fact, Golda Meir had made her choice long before, when as a little girl she hid from the antiSemites’ pogroms in her wooden house near the Besarabsky Market.

Sozopol:

A Dream on the Black Sea Coast Do you ever dream about the sea? When you walk around an old town, bypassing small wooden houses shrouded in vines and then descend the stairs of a narrow street to where you can hear the whisper of the waves... And wherever you go – to the left, forward, or back from despair – you alwaysreachthe coast. You sit on the sand, look up at the blue sky and white seagulls that fly by the hundreds above. Fascinated, you observe the ships. They are seen on the horizon, far in the distance... If you have had such dreams, then congratulations – you can at least approximately imagine how the nicest and most romantic town in Bulgaria – Sozopol – looks like…

Departing for our trip, we decided to take a coach bus to Sozopol. To cover the considerable distance from Ukraine to the peninsula we had tospend not a little, not a lot, but the whole day.

Of course, in the incredible heat the journey was not very pleasant. The only advantage was the good European roads. Once we passed the border between Ukraine and Romania wewere spared from potholes and constantshaking.

We also enjoyed looking at the manicured fields of the European Union, the powerful equipment that was gathering corn, sunflower plantations, and thousands of huge windmills.

Talk of renewable energy here is not just empty words.

So after a day and night of continuous travel, at day break we woke up in a completely different world. The streets were lined with palm trees, we were surrounded by luxurious hotels with swimming pools, and we could hear the roar of the sea of tourists and ships. We were in Pomorie.

It is a rather well known and large resort town, but despite this, we did not planto stay here; we only stopped for coffee, which we do not betray under any circumstances, and a short walk to stretch your legs and exchange dollars for levs (the local currency was quite expensive).

In less than an hour we arrived in Burgas, from where we took another bus to our final destination – Sozopol.

We immediately understood that we had made the right decision to choose this place for our vacation. The contrast between this and the rest of the resorts in Bulgaria was obvious. Instead of multistory houses were small tidy houses, in place of the broad and noisy streetswere narrow, quiet streets, instead of crowds there were families and couples. Hundreds of cafés and restaurants with all culinary diversity. Choose any dish from the menu and you will be sure that it will be delicious, but also so huge that you won’t be able to finish it.So as not to be big spenders we ordered one item from the menu for two. Anyway, it turned out larger than the dishes we order in the restaurants of our native Lviv...

similar to Greek cuisine. This is due to a similar geographical location and long historical ties between the two countries. We were amazed at the great variety of salads, one of the ingredients of which isalwayscheese, a rich selection of hot and cold soups, and spices and seasonings which are unusual for us. At first it was difficult to get used to them, but when we returned home, we looked for them in the supermarket.

So if you are in Sozopol, be sure that any restaurant serves a local variation of the Shopska salad. It consists of tomatoes, cucumbers, onions, peppers (raw, marinated, or grilled), cheese, parsley, olives, and olive oil. It is prepared by chopping the vegetables and herbs finely, then sprinkling them with grated cheese and oil.

In Bulgaria Shopskasalad is considered a national dish. The cooks arranged the ingredients in the following order: on the bottom tomatoes, then cucumbers, and on top cheese. This produces the colors of the Bulgarian national flag.

The local cuisine is also known for its soups, which are prepared according to the seasons.

For example, in the summer it istarator–a cold soup with yogurt and cucumbers. When the temperature reaches 80 degrees, it is the best food for the body you can imagine...

For the main course Bulgarians serve moussaka.

This is baked mincedmeat with potatoes, and topped with yogurt mixed with eggs. Guvech is baked meat with potatoes, eggplant, tomatoes, and other vegetables. Of course, the list is not complete without Kebapche, which is grilled minced meat that is fried on charcoal. This is perhaps the most common meat dish in Bulgaria.

So, what else were we impressed by in Sozopol?

First, that wherever we went when we were exploring the city, we always found the sea. Sozopol is situated on a peninsula and almost all of it has a great coastline. So there are indeed many beaches and no one will fight for a place under the sun.

In general, the inhabitants of the town are extremely kind. It seems that to cater to tourists they are willing to learn any language in the world.

At least to us, though not very well, they answered in Russian, Ukrainian, English, and even Polish.

True polyglots! We were also very impressed bySozopol’s beaches. They are all owned by the municipality and are free. You can sunbathe as much as you want, and nobody will demand a penny. Furthermore, the sand is extremely clean!

This city on the Black Sea is extremely ancient.

According to historical data it was established in the sixth century BC by Greek colonizers. And once it was called something completely different –Apollonia. This name was given by the Greeks to honor the god Apollo, the patron saint of seafarers.

At that time a thirteenmeter bronze statue was built in his honor. It is now preserved in the Roman Capitol. It was transported there by the legionary Lucullus who destroyed Apollonia at the end of the first century BC. A few centuries later the town was revived and became known Sozopolis–the city of salvation... If you want to see how it looks now, do not waste any time. As long as summer is still here, pack your bags and go on a trip!

Hit of the Season – the Grill: From History to the Present When it’s so hot outside that the thermometer is showing close to 90ºF, one has a strong desire to spend time in nature, away from the bustle of the city. It is there, near a lake or river, in a birch or spruce grove that grilled vegetables taste their best. They can be a side dish to meat or fish or a main dish with fresh bread and a spicy sauce.

But when there is no possibility to grill vegetables out in the open with the smell of smoke, this dish can always be ordered at your favorite restaurant.

Master chefs have a meticulous approach to cooking vegetables on the grill, so wonderful culinary experiences are always guaranteed. For fruits and vegetables on the grill is a real treat for foodies. These dishes have an exceptional taste, are prepared easily, and can decorate any festive table.

From the history pages – Who invented the grill?

If you search through old cookbooks, you can learn that the first prototype for the modern grill was invented in 1952 by an ordinary worker named George Stephen, who lived in Chicago and worked as a metal welder.

In that distant time the man worked at a metal shop. The spherical shape of the parts that he produced gave him the idea at the right time.

After all, George was a great lover of barbecue – like most people in the area, after work or on weekends he would cook all sorts of meats on a grill in the courtyard of his house.

But George was annoyed by the sudden breezes that would stir up dust and ashes and dirty the steaks and sausages, which were being prepared on the open fire.

One day George invented the new grill when he simply decided to cover his dish with a lid.

The “inventor” made a lower hemisphere with holes for airflow so that the charcoal would heat well, placed a cooking grid over the charcoal, and covered it all with another hemisphere, which also had openings for airflow.

Welding a tripod to the grill for a good welder was no problem at all.

The man had no intention of making a patent for his invention. But his grill had wild success and he could not keep up with all of the orders he was receiving from his relatives, friends, and neighbors.

As a result, George decided to start mass producing the grill. The company that produced it gradually improved the original version of the spherical grill and developed new models.

It has become another symbol of the Soviet Union, along with Doctor’s Sausage, Zhigulevskoye beer, the sickle and hammer, and the anthem “The Unbreakable Union.” Moreover, the product conceived of as an alternative to the expensive and inaccessible foreign wines was a hit in the USSR and for many years outlived the country itself. This month’s rubric is dedicated to Soviet Champagne, a frothy drink we still enjoy.

The history of this wine dates back to 1924. Back then, after the dry law was lifted, the Soviet government gave a new and extremely difficult task to the local winemakers – to make a new sort of the sparkling wine that is tasty but cheap and accessible to everyone. The best specialists were involved in making it. They traveled abroad, exchanged experiences, and tried to implement complicated techniques at home. But despite this, the progress was slow. Until Comrade Stalin interfered himself. In 1936, at a session of Politburo that was attended by him, the Council of People’s Commissars and the Central Committee of the Communist Party issued a decree “On the Production of Soviet Champagne, Dessert, and Table Wines.” They also approved the decision to build several factories that would produce these wines.

The food industry People’s Commissar Anastas Mikoyan back then said a phrase which turned decisive for the industry: “Comrade Stalin is busy with the most important issues of building socialism in our country. He is aware of the entire economy but he also thinks of details, because every detail matters. Comrade Stalin said that the Stakhanovites now make lots of money, just as engineers and laborers do. But if they decide to have some champagne, can they get it? Champagne is a symbol of material prosperity, a symbol of well-being.”

In 1937, the first batch of Soviet Champagne was made at the Don factory. The technology to make it was constantly improved. The year 1953 saw a technological breakthrough, when the secondary fermentation in a sealed reservoir was replaced with a so-called continuous flow.

The champagne now fermented in a system of seven to eight containers linked between themselves. It moved at a constant speed and under certain pressure. As a result, it became frothier, more transparent, and lost its yeasty flavor. That this method was really good is backed by the following fact: in 1975, the license to produce champagne with the Soviet technology was bought by the oldest French wine company – Moet.

Філософію скрипки зрозумів у Кремоні, де працював Страдіварі… На його інструментах грають у різних куточках світу; з ними здобувають нагороди на престижних конкурсах; вони за десятки тисяч євро йдуть з молотка на міжнародних аукціонах. За тридцять років українець Мирослав Пуцентела створив близько 350 ексклюзивних скрипок. Їх він називає не інакше як «космічними інструментами», присвячує їм увесь свій час і має мрію: перевершити самого Страдіварі. Про таємниці свого ремесла майстер розповідає в інтерв’ю газеті «Бульба NEWS».

Про творчий шлях

У минулому я був музикантом, керував оркестром, гастролював світом. Потім взявся робити скрипки. Хоча це складно назвати роботою, це швидше стиль життя, бо зі своїми скрипками я не працюю, я з ними розмовляю. Найголовніше – це зрозуміти, що дерево «каже», а воно все говорить саме, просто треба відсікти зайве. Мій фах зовсім непростий, почав його опановувати 33 роки тому. Спершу перечитав дуже багато літератури, потім вчився в однієї надзвичайно талановитої людини, яка дала перші навики роботи з деревом. Опановувати ремесло продовжив в Італії, в Кремоні, в інституті імені Страдіварі. Саме там зрозумів усю суть і філософію скрипки, бо це синтез дуже багатьох видів мистецтва, культури, науки. Це дизайн, архітектура, скульптура, живопис, музика… За ці роки створив понад 380 інструментів; з них тридцять п’ять віолончелей, один контрабас, решту – скрипки та альти.

Про «народження» інструмента

Спершу необхідно зрубати дерево. Далі його слід ретельно підготувати, а цей процес може тривати від семи до десяти років. Тільки після цього з деревом можна починати працювати. Власне процес виготовлення інструмента займає близько чотирьох місяців, бо треба зробити акустику, заґрунтувати тощо. Цікаво, що після того, як зроблю скрипку, її ще треба шістдесят–вісімдесят разів покривати

Далі монтується «дужка», від якої залежить звучання, струни, підставка, загальне настроювання. Тоді інструмент починає оживати. Скрипка – це фактично комп’ютер Середньовіччя. Диву даєшся, як у ті часи люди могли досягти такої якості звуку… Якщо розібратися, то скрипка – просто дерев’яна коробка, але ж, попри те, дала старт таким геніям, як Бах, Кореллі, Вівальді, Паганіні. Вони вклали у скрипку свою душу, і вона живе досі практично в первісному вигляді.

Про деревину

Раніше я працював виключно з італійською деревиною, а зараз виготовляю інструменти з карпатського явора. У Кремоні є такий знаменитий маестро Луккі, який створив так званий «Луккі-тестер» – апарат, що досліджує відповідність звукових коливань у деревині. І коли я привіз туди деревину з України, то виявилося, що вона за певними параметрами є навіть кращою за італійську. Карпатський явір має дуже добру акустику. Послухайте, він як дзвін дзвенить. Щоб почати робити скрипку, деревина повинна добре висохнути і має бути зрізана у відповідний день. Це, як правило, роблять на молодий місяць. Є три ночі, коли на небі немає місяця, у той період і необхідно зрізати дерево, бо тоді воно «мертве», не має соку. Наші предки про це дуже добре знали і користувалися цим. Саме тому, коли розбирають старі будинки,

то матеріал, з яких вони зведені, є живим, він здоровий. Більше того, кожен шматочок дерева говорить мені, що з нього може бути: або скрипка, або альт, або віолончель. Його треба слухати. От я зараз вам продемонструю це лише на двох шматках дерева, самі пересвідчитесь (б’є пальцями по заготовці). Чуєте, як цей дзвенить? Зараз беру нібито ідентичний шматок, але, послухайте, воно набагато нижче звучить. Цей брусок, відповідно, підійде для альта, а той інший – для скрипки, бо вона повинна мати вищі частоти.

Про феномен Страдіварі

Кожен майстер мріє і сподівається створити таку відому скрипку, як у Страдіварі. Але треба сказати. що не всі його інструменти є дуже хорошими по звуку. Думаю, це пов’язано з тим, що він прожив 93 роки і все своє життя експериментував. Стільки моделей, як виготовив він, не створив жоден майстер світу. Страдіварі був надзвичайно талановитим і настільки красиво змоделював скрипку, що вона стала зразком, основою для всіх наступних поколінь. Відповідно, тепер усі намагаються копіювати їх. Таким шляхом свого часу і я йшов, поки не створив свою модель. Колись розробив дизайн альта, і він переміг на музичному конкурсі у Москві в 2007 році, а мій син пішов далі – він створив моделі скрипки, альта, віолончелі. Цікаво, що всі рівняються на школу Страдіварі, Гварнелі, Аматі, але зовсім недавно в Америці відбувся цікавий конкурс. Відомі скрипалі з-поміж шістдесяти чотирьох інструментів мали вибрати найкращий. І, уявіть собі, серед них були інструменти, виготовлені і Гварнелі, і Аматі, і Страдіварі, але музиканти надали перевагу двом сучасним скрипкам... Це свідчить про те, що сьогодні мистецтво виготовлення скрипок у світі перебуває на дуже високому рівні. Я би сказав, що це має стратегічне значення у музиці. Не дивно, адже музика – це мова спілкування між людьми, а скрип-

ка – засіб. Прикро, що в Україні ця галузь дуже слабо розвинена, можна сказати не розвинена взагалі. Здебільшого, у нас працюють самоуки, які звідкись отримують інформацію, по крихтах збирають необхідні знання… Звичайно, що самотужки осягнути ту глибу знань дуже складно. Для цього потрібна ґрунтовна освіта.

Про вартість інструментів

Скрипка не має своєї товарної якості, вона має звукову якість. Скільки коштують мої скрипки, сказати не можу, бо все індивідуально. Ось у мене сертифікат з одного європейського аукціону в Кельні. Згідно з ним стартова ціна на мій інструмент була дванадцять тисяч євро. Так розпочиналися торги, але як закінчилися сказати важко, бо це було таємницею. Текст: Степан Грицюк Фото: Юрій Гелитович

The violin can perform on a par with many wooden ones, it weighs only 2 kilograms as the stone sound box of the violin is only 2.5 mm thick. It should be noted that the Blackbird violin is not the only of its kind in the world. Czech artist Jan Rericha makes violins of marble.

Let’s Celebrate Ivana Kupala!

In order to honor afolk tradition, in July the staff of Korchma organized an ambitious and beautiful flashmob in nature. It was timed to thecolorful midsummer holiday – Ivana Kupala. The event was celebrated at the Kozachefarm, where fresh organic produce has been grown for our chainfor years. It was no accident that the team chose this location – such beautiful and untouched nature is not easy to find!

So, about one hundred and thirty of our employees took off to Riazanska Oblast. First, as dictated by folk custom, we visited a church, then tasted the sweet honey from a local apiary, visited different areas of the farm, and then we

headed to the river because there is no Ivana Kupalawithout water. The girls weaved wreaths with wild flowers and sang songs, while the boys lit a huge bonfire through which later we all jumped. Then the dancingstarted! Perhaps they were the most beautiful and the most passionate dances in our lives. First place was taken by dancers from our restaurant on Sadovoy-Samotechnoy. Second place went to the staff at the restaurant on Bakuninskoy. And the third from the restaurant on Myasnitskoy!

Now we are looking forward to next year’s celebration. Next time we will take our best of friends,because these events are unforgettable.

“Oh on Ivana, oh on Kupala…”

Perhaps our readers have heard of the celebration of Ivana Kupala, but many probably know very little about the history of this folk holiday. Turns out that it goes back to pagan times and originally it had nothing to do with Christian traditions. This was how our ancestors celebrated the summer solstice, which falls on June 20-22. And of course, the celebration included magic, in which at that time there was widespread belief. Above all,

it meant cleansing with fire and water.

With the advent of Christianity, the people did not reject this popular tradition, but rather combinedit with the day of St. John the Baptist.

According to the Old Style calendar, this holiday fell on June 24, so now it is falls on July 7 in the New Style calendar. AlthoughIvana Kupalamay no longer fall exactly on the summer solstice, it hasn’t lost its vibrant customs. Like hundreds of years ago,

people dress in traditional clothing, light a bonfire, jump over it, and tell fortunes. The night of Ivana Kupalais still considered one of the “strongest” – it is filled with magical elements. The main attributes are water, fire, and grass. They are healing powers.

It is a celebration of youth and lovers. Many people look for their destinies this night. Those who have already found their soul mates go to Ivana Kupalato further strengthen their bonds.

Korchma Taras Bulba continues to support children from orphanages. From each borsch sold in our restaurant in the United States, one dollar is donated to festive dinners for kids in Kyiv. Since the beginning of our charity project we have already treated 160 parentless children to tasty meals! In addition to a delicious dinner an entertainment program is organized for them. For many little guests this was their first visit to the restaurant…

As of today, we have again raised 555 US dollars. On August 2 we will use these funds to organize another big feast in Kyiv!
