Dear everyone, As we look back to 2019, we realized that we are blessed to be part of our children’s lives and through the year we realized that Buku Jalanan Chow Kit is not only about good academic results of our children nor only about winning in everything that our children venture in. It is always about giving our children opportunities – to experience, to feel, to be part of the excitement, to learn, to learn, to learn and later to think about how they are going to design their own path of life.

This is why Buku Jalanan Chow Kit is here. We are to ensure that our children have equal access to quality education that will help them prepare themselves for a better future.

In the following review, you will be presented with the effort our team has delivered over the course of 2019. Our programs, activities, and projects are constantly evolving towards reaching our goal of literacy and sustainable livelihood for our children.

At Buku Jalanan Chow Kit, we provide our children with the opportunity to develop their full potential through holistic development growth in empowering them. We believe in the importance of providing a platform for the children to launch and ready themselves for the real world through quality education. This is to ensure that our children receive inclusive and equitable quality education that promotes lifelong learning opportunities for them.

In ensuring the sustainable livelihood of our children, we tried to nurture the curiosity and imagination of our children. We ran various living skills workshops, events and activities. All of these projects are targeted into answering a few questions that came after observing the environment our children are living in and how it has affected the children. Projects that asked questions of “What if all these children of Chow Kit are allowed to learn more and explore more of life?”, “What opportunities will arise when Chow Kit Children get a chance to explore life beyond their cramped space?” and “Can we build and empower these children through hands-on life experiences?” As we tried to answer these questions, we choose to immerse the children in their first camping trip, various kitchen projects, entrepreneurship stints, arts sessions, field trips, city nature trails and we involved them in a theater project.

Through all of these projects, the children learnt multifaceted living skills knowledge and experiencing life as a canvas of exploration.

2019 Turning dreams into reality A better social environment for the vulnerable children of Chow Kit

The creation of BJCK FC where we partnered with Nexus FC to give our children a chance to compete in a football league

Providing education opportunity to stateless/ displaced children & improving the academic performance of BJCK children

35 children enrolled in SBJCK and 85 children attended BJCK weekend night classes

To increase literacy rate among the marginalized children in Chow Kit by 90%.

By Dec 2019, 30 SBJCK children are proficient in reading & BJCK children achieved a 90% literacy rate

Creating opportunities for marginalized children to be part of various activities and programs

BJCK children participated in the Young TOEFL project, FAM grassroot program, Makers Challenge exhibition and few other programs.

Creating transformational change projects that lead to sustainable livelihoods and socially resilient children

Our children were exposed to 4 entrepreneurship stints throughout the years
