Greetings,

The DC Department of Employment Services (DOES), Office of Apprenticeship, Information, and Training (OAIT) is pleased to provide our senior high school students from DC public and charter schools the opportunity to participate in our Youth Apprenticeship Program (YAP).

The YAP is an “earn and learn” employment opportunity for students to develop core skills and gain professional experience while pursuing post-secondary employment. This educational program provides qualified students with a pathway to begin learning an occupation, combining on-the-job learning and training with related academic and technical classroom education.

The YAP is a 200-hour program consisting of no more than 20 hours per week, typically from January to June. YAP participants are paid the hourly minimum wage, currently $17.50 per hour.

The goal of the YAP is to provide participants with a pathway to the middle class through full-time paid apprenticeship opportunities and employment upon successfully completing the program and graduating from high school. YAP participants may also receive industry credentials and certifications.

Typically, YAP participants gain a head start when applying for jobs after high school due to the valuable career skills and professional networks they develop through this program.

DOES, through hiring fairs, summer employment opportunities, on-the-job training, year-round internships, the YAP, and virtual information sessions, demonstrates a firm commitment to helping our youth establish a foundation for success.

I invite our high school seniors to apply for our Youth Apprenticeship Program.

Sincerely,
