Build is a FREE, localy owned and run magazine made for all automotive enthusiasts who enjoy everything there is about cars, trucks and bikes. This mag WILL NOT be full of editorial B.S. telling you whats cool, whats not, what to buy or what not to. Sure we all have our favorites, but this magazine is for the gearhead who can relate and appreciate the craftsmanship, time and energy it takes, no matter what scene he or she is into. Instead we will bring you local show coverage, shop tours, artist profiles, reader rides, how to’s, mailbag, projects, and multipule ride spotlights on a lifestyle each of us have running through our blood. Our editorial will be kept to a minimum and pictures will be plenty. Being a NON-BIASED magazine, if you don’t see what your into, send us a e-mail and we’ll cover it. From all of us at Build, thanks and keep the shiny side up and the rubber out of the rubarb.

From hot rods to customs, bikes to full race, this mecca for gear-heads was well worth the journey for anyone who enjoys old school, ear ringing, gas fumed, tire burning get togethers. If you missed it, you better of had a good reason cause it was a killer time.

The Gearheads Wife

They say men are from Mars and women are from Venus. But I don’t know, sometimes I think my man is from Uranus. Seriously, on what planet is it acceptable to take your wife’s car without asking, leaving her stranded with a huge list of things to do on her only day off? Yes, there were other cars in the driveway, none of which she is “allowed” to drive. Then he tells his fellow gearheads that I’m like a light switch. WTF! I express happiness when it is relevant and disapproval when he unnecessarily inconveniences me, and when I’m really choked, I will not hide it. Nope, no secrets here, he acts like an idiot, I’m going to let him know! It’s not my fault that he consistently flip flops back and forth between Mr. Wonderful and Mr. Deadbeat. I am only reacting accordingly. His answer to everything is, “Whatever, I’ll be in the shop.” It’s so annoying, there is no communication here at all! Fine, go to the shop, but is the shop going to make you dinner, or do the laundry, or keep you warm at night?! How about when you’re an old cripple, is the shop going to push you around in a wheelchair?! You know how you look at a happy dog and you know they’re either thinking about food or, “Get the ball, gonna get the ball, I got the ball!”... Well, I can see the thought bubble above his head and all it says is, “Build a hot rod, gonna build a hot rod, building a hot rod!” On Wednesdays, “hot rod” is replaced by “Choppa.” It’s nice to see him happy, but URGH!!! There’s more to life than hot rods and choppers! “OPEN YOUR EYES!!!” Sigh... I need a little retail therapy. I only get five minutes from the house and “Bing, bing, bing.” says my car. Are you effin kidding me?! It’s overheating, the temp gauge is way up at the top. I pull over and call my gearhead. He comes to my rescue with antifreeze. He must have set this up cause I have a flat tire too... and the spare is flat! He takes my tire to the gas station and fills it up, and comes back to put it on. Kiss kiss, hug hug. So now he’s my knight in shining armour, and I’m the damsel in distress. Whatever, is this the light switch he’s taking about??

On July 25 2010 Luxurious CC (BC Chapter) set the stage for BC’s premier lowriding event at the Tudor Ale House. Beautiful skies above brought out the hottest muscle, import, minitruck and of coarse lowriders from the region. By the end of the day is was evident to see that lowriding in BC is strong and will continue to grow with shows like this.

Mail Bag I was wondering what it would take to be added to your list of distribution points? I love your no BS format. Dave Code Wakefieldsperling Abbotsford. Well, all you have to do is shoot us an email which you have already done. We’ll make sure some issues make it out to you guys. Glad you like the lack of BS, we sometimes get the gears from people about our content or the lack of. LOL Cheers, Build I was wondering, how can I get copy’s of your past issues? Steve Odds are not good, we usually bring our extra issues to shows to hand out and they go fast. You can always go to our website www. buildmagazine.ca we have all our issues online as well. If your after the real thing I recommend you make friends with one of our distributors and see if they will put one aside for you. I’ve talked to some guys at the Lordco stores and they say that people will call them just to see if the new issue of Build was in, so you will have to be quick. Build

Build QnA Brought to you by...

Wheels and tires. It’s one of the first things most people change when they get a new vehical. whether it’s an 09’ Escalade with 26” bling or a 63’ Impalla with 13” Tru spokes. There are countless tire and wheel combos out there, thousands! But when your shopping for new rollers there are some important things to consider other than how they look. Choosing the wrong wheel can have an addverse even dangerous effect on your ride. Just because they bolt on doesn’t mean you should. Offset. Back space. Width.... all play a part........ Research now = happy later. So exactly what is offset? The offset of a wheel is the distance from its hub mounting surface to the center-line of the wheel. The offset can be one of three types. Zero Offset The hub mounting surface is even with the center-line of the wheel. Positive The hub mounting surface is toward the front or outside of the wheel. Positive offset wheels are usually found on your wife’s front wheel drive car. Negative The hub mounting surface is toward the back or brake side of the wheels center-line.“Deep dish” wheels are typically a negative offset. So here’s the important part. If the offset of the wheel is not correct for the car, the handling can be adversely affected. When the width of the wheel changes, the offset also changes numerically. You following me? If the offset were to stay the same while you added width, the additional width would be split evenly between the inside and outside. For most cars, this won’t work correctly. It can cause everything from poor handling to premature steering component failure. What about back spacing? Backspacing, similar to offset, it is the distance from the hub mounting surface to the inside lip of the wheel. An important and weird note here. Backspacing is measured in inches. Where as offset is measured in millimeters. Go figure!

Send you questions and comments to QnA@buildmagazine.ca

OK, a quick check list of commonly used terms.................... · Wheel Offset – The distance between the wheel center-line and the mounting pad. · Backspace – The distance between the mounting pad and the outer most part of the wheel’s drum side. · Wheel Center-line – The absolute center of the wheel. · Bolt Circle Diameter – The diameter of the bolt-holes. · Wheel Diameter – The wheel’s diameter where the tire’s bead mounts and creates a seal. · Mounting Pad – The portion of the wheel that butts up against the hub face. · Drum Side – The side of the wheel facing the drum. · Street Side – The visible side of the wheel when mounted correctly. · Positive Offset – The wheel’s mounting pad is adjusted away from the drum/brake side of the wheel’s center-line · Zero Offset – The wheels mounting pad is in line with the wheel’s center line. · Negative Offset – The wheel’s mounting pad is adjusted away from the street/wheel side of the wheel’s center-line So you want to put some new wheels on your ride? How do you figure out what offset you need? Back spacing?????? Let’s look at what’s on the car now......... First, measure the overall width of the wheel. Next, divide that width of the wheel by two; this will give you the center-line of the wheel. Overall width/2 = Center-line So 7” divide by 2 = 3.5” After determining the center-line, measure from the hub-mounting surface of the hub to the edge of the inboard flange (if the wheel were laying flat on the ground – face up – your measurement would be from the ground to the hub-mounting surface). This is your back spacing. Back spacing - Center-line = Offset Determining your offset: If you look inside almost any wheel you should find a set of numbers/letters stamped inside the wheel. The markings will be somewhat similar to the following: 15x7 135-5-38 these markings will tell you quite a bit about the wheels you have. Here is how the numbers break down... 15x7 - Diameter and Width of wheels. 15” tall, 7” wide 135 - P.C.D., or bolt pattern in mm 5 - Number of bolt holes 38 - Offset measurement in mm This number will obviously vary from wheel to wheel. Depending on your car or wheel size. This should be used to help determine if the wheel will fit your car or not. So now that your more confused than ever, go pick up some chrome reverse rims from the flea market, some tire from the auto wrecking yard....... and drive it like you stole it!!!! Send you questions and comments to QnA@buildmagazine.ca
