The good we build

How we choose partners & projects

When I reflect on the difference BGF has made in the world this year, I’m proud that the fruit of our hard work extends far beyond each construction site. After all, our success is not measured by the number of structures we design and build, but by the impact our buildings make on the communities we are privileged to serve.

Building Goodness Foundation (BGF) is a nonprofit construction organization. We partner with high-impact NGOs and domestic nonprofit organizations to design, build, and repair structures which increase our partners’ capacity to do great work.

The school campus BGF is building with our partner Center of Hope, Haiti is far more than just a set of buildings. The new classrooms were thoughtfully designed by a long-time BGF volunteer whose professional career has been spent planning world-class educational facilities. Generations of Haitian children will now have the opportunity to learn in an environment designed to best facilitate their education. As years go by and generations of Haitian children are educated in those classrooms, we’ll see the effects of BGF’s hard work multiplied again and again.

Similarly, BGF’s professionally-skilled volunteers renovated the lounge room at The Haven, a day shelter which supports homeless clients in the local Charlottesville community. Hundreds of our less fortunate neighbors now have a place where they can sit on a comfortable bench and find respite from the street, search for a job, and enjoy the companionship of friends.

The same is true whether we are building a health clinic in Nicaragua or renovating a nonprofit in Virginia. By leveraging the talents of BGF’s design and construction volunteers and BGF’s organizational expertise, our partners are able to stretch their resources to build structures that improve lives in their communities.

None of this good work would occur without the willingness of our donors to invest in our long term success so that we can continue to increase access to services and opportunities that break cycles of poverty, both at home and abroad.

Radford-Fairlawn Daily Bread • Partner mission: soup kitchen • Project: repurposed kitchen to dry goods storage, new chemical storage closet, removal of interior stairs

Cleveland, OH Project Lift • Partner mission: supportive housing and life skills mentoring for court-involved young men • Project: new plumbing fixtures/furnace/windows, floor & porch repairs, gutter work for a 1920s home

International Projects Hormiguero, Nicaragua

Ti kay housing

Bridges to Community Hormiguero Clinic BGF is building a new, 18-room clinic in Hormiguero, Nicaragua which will give needed medical attention to 7 health territories and over 18,000 residents. It will provide an emergency room, lab, private exam rooms, delivery room, and space for overnight stays.

• Nicaragua, 2016-18 • Partners: Bridges to Community, MINSA • Budget: $635,000 • Impact: improved medical care, including emergency care, in remote northeastern Nicaragua

Hormiguero, Nicaragua

To date, BGF has built over 850 permanent, earthquake- and stormresistant “small houses” (ti kays) for Haitians still struggling with housing since the 2010 earthquake.

• Haiti, 2010-present • Multiple partners • Budget: $935,000 / year • Impact: Housing for the very poor • 140 houses per year impact 750+ individuals

BGF is currently seeking funds for the ti kay program, which will end in December 2018 unless more funding can be found.

Hinche, Haiti

International Projects CODEP’s demonstration forest

Incentive kay housing BGF’s incentive kay program has stimulated reforestation in Haiti for 16 years, by providing a house to each Haitian who has done a certain amount of tree planting or other work with our partner CODEP. Most spend years earning a house.

Center of Hope (Haiti) unlocks the future of the poorest children in Hinche, Haiti through individualized, excellent-quality education. In 2017, BGF built the second of four buildings in a planned campus which will let COHH expand.
