Annual Report Building Goodness Foundation | 2011

building community and improving lives

Dear Friends, At Building Goodness Foundation, we like to say that there are three things that keep BGF healthy: strong partner organizations, a strong donor base and high volunteer energy. In the past year, we have done more construction and made more progress with our partners than ever before. Our donor base is larger and more supportive than in any year since our founding. And, most important, last year BGF had record numbers of volunteers and volunteer hours. Our volunteer trip surveys consistently show that 80–90% of our volunteers consider their experience to be transformational. We have had more first time and more repeat volunteers than ever before. Lastly, we found that still over half of our volunteers are recruited by word of mouth from friends and family. If you have had an experience with BGF that was meaningful to you, please share your experience with others and encourage them to participate in a BGF project. Building Goodness means many things. It is not just about the buildings; it is about the people, too. A friend

once told me, “More is not better—better is better.” I think that, by any measure, Building Goodness Foundation continues to get better even as we find ways to do more.

Measuring independence and dignity How does one quantify the value of a steady paycheck, construction education and a safe, comfortable home? 2011 saw Building Goodness Foundation volunteers use their design and construction skills at sites in Virginia and several Haitian areas. By partnering with organizations deeply rooted within the communities they serve, we address their facility needs so that they may continue their programming. Through this unique collaboration, our volunteers support reforestation in Haiti, give residents with disabilities an upgraded home, help children with medical needs enjoy summer camp away from home and provide an uplifting location for a neighborhood rebuilding after an earthquake. As odd as it may sound, using a circular saw and carpenter square connects to independence, hope and security. This year, volunteers worked alongside Haitian crews teaching them safe construction practices throughout the building process. Intuitively, we know it brings a lot of goodness—the intangible, immeasurable dignity of earning money to provide food and education for one’s family, in learning new skills and rebuilding what’s been destroyed. In 2012, work continues here in Charlottesville and in Haiti. We are expanding our local work to support year-round projects. In Haiti, the primary school replacing the one destroyed in the earthquake and the Excelsior Technical Institute are underway. We’ll build at least 50 ti kays and several incentive kays. In the end, there’s no easy way to quantify the impact our volunteers and donors have through BGF, but stories from partners show how these buildings do change lives. Check us out at

Update from Ft. Liberté, Haiti Early in BGF history, we partnered with the Friends of Ft. Liberté (FFL) from Elkins, WV. This group of medical professionals sent volunteers in regular intervals to Ft. Liberté in response to the dire health conditions in the community. In 2004, BGF volunteers completed the clinic. Recently, we caught up with Bonnie Woodrum from FFL to ask how the clinic has impacted the community in Ft. Liberté. Ms. Woodrum explains, “Previous to the permanent clinic site, visiting medical teams had to pack up and store meds and supplies at the end of their stay to be taken out and used when the next team came in. Since the building has been there, not only can supplies be secured on site, but also Haitian medical personnel can provide services between American team visits. “Without exaggerating, I can tell you that lives have been saved at the clinic. For example, children in diabetic comas as well as patients with nearly overwhelming infections have been diagnosed and saved, broken bones have been set, respiratory patients given breathing treatments. With regular dispensing of meds, chronic illnesses have been controlled. A small lab aids diagnosis, and contacts with bigger clinics in neighboring towns provide further treatment when needed and available. Also, maintaining the clinic has provided jobs and has contributed to the local economy.”

Trip Leaders at Core of BGF Success

by Kelly Eplee, Executive Director

It is often humbling and inspiring to work in the BGF office. We witness what a few hundred volunteers can do to change the lives of thousands through better health care, education spaces, housing and community centers.
