The Accident of Birth
It isn't the ancestral shadow you cast, but the light you bear, that makes the way easy for you and others.
Many of our first families-as you come into town-have ancestors that came over on the N{ayflower'
Other Mayflo'iver descendants have managed to live it down and they dwell in marble halls with the nabobs on Snob Hill; but their neighbors came over in an ash can.
A family picture should be the place for background and ancestors. Let the dead rest in peace, but you should be up and doing instead of leaning on a coffrn.
Pedigrees are for pups and prigs.
The bnly aristocracy should be that of service.
Ancestois are good only as measuring sticks. If they are famous, you musihustle to measure up to them. If ordinary, you muit hustle to keep your head above the swamp of mediocrity.
Pride should be vested in praiseworthy personal performance. No medals should be given out for an accident of birth. Yottr great-grandfather WAS-not IS. You borrowed your years from eternity-when you finish paying back, you are history.
As you pass the Historian's Camera, be sure you register as more than a carbo. copy'Strubre.

"Mother, how did that pretty rainbow get in the sky?"
"\Mhy, dear, that is just a lovely picture that God painted for us a11."
"My, He did an awful good job with l{is left hand, didn't He?"
"His left hand, sou?"
"Yes, 'cause rve read in Sunday School that Jesus sits on His right harrd." * >k *
Speaking of Sunday School, a.certain teacher had been discussing the beauty and wonders of Heaven with her group of small children. "Now," she said, "all of you who want to go to Heaven, raise your hands."
All hands came up, but one. The teacher was perplexed. "What is it, Johnnv?" she asked. "Don't you want to go to Heaven ?"
"No, ma'am," said Johnny. "I can't. 1\'[y mamma tolcl me to come right straight home after Sunday School."
Some Doy And Todoy
One of the hardest things for most of us to do is to live the fullest in the present. We are always thinking about what we are going to do some day.
Some day we are going to visit Capri where we can rvatch the bronze-bodied blue water.
Some day we are going to find time tempting books on the shelf.
Some-day we are going to put fear out of our hearts and accept the universe with the certainty that the law is taking care of everything, ourselves included.
Some day we are going to do so many to do.
But today, which is all the day we'll ever know, we treat as something of no great value. Today we'll do what we can to pass the time awaY.
But tbmorrow-ah, tomorrow will come trailing clouds of glory. But when tomorrow comes we find it is only today and sit in the sun swimmers in the to read all those things we love aga1n.
And so life goes. That rn'hen they are young.

"Now, Freddy," said the teacher, "tell me the name of the principal river in Egypt."
"The Nile, teacher," said Freddy.
"That's right," said the teacher. "And now can you tell me the names of the smaller tributaries?"
"Oh, yes sir," replied Freddy. "Juveniles."
