Willow Creek (Humboldt County), Calif. -Construction workers building an access timber road in this "last. frontier" of the Old West were carrying rifles last month and traveling in pairs, convinced that "Big Foot," a California version of the "Abominable Snow Man of the Himalavas." is real and not a hoax, reported The Sin Francisco Examiner.
Contractor Ray Wallace, in charge of the project, said he was convinced the huge, human-like footprints were genuine after finding blood on the trail. He said he first thotrght it was an abnormally large grizzly bear like he'd hunted in Canada but gave up the idea when the prints showed no claws, but stubby toes. He added a grizzly print would have showed all fours, but this creature walked upright.

Aged members of the tribe recalled when their fathers chased "the big devils" with firebrands through part of Siskiyou and Del Norte counties and northern Humboldt county. Huge tracks were first picked up again two years ago.
Contractor Wallace said his workers are really tough but are concerned about this and are now carrying guns as a precaution. Humboldt County Undersheriff Gus Fritz alerted resident deputies to watch for the "creature.tt
