In January 1941 commissioned 2nd Lieutenant, Corps of Engineers, and assigned to duty with combat engineer company. Became a company commander in Combat Engineer Regiment, shipping overseas to Ireland and England in 1942. Participated in African invasion, Sicily invasion and the campaigns of Italy. Served three years overseas, two as Battalion Commander, attaining rank of Lieutenant Colonel. Received Legion of Merit and Bronze Star with two oak leaf clusters.

At end of 1945 returned to Diamond Match Company and served as a construction engineer on road survey and bridge building.

Was one of founders of Sierra-Cascade Logging Conference and served as Secretary-Manager from its start in 1949 through 1955, at which time became lifetime director.

Son of California Senator Swift Berrv. Placerville. formerly general manager of Michigan-California Lumbei Co., Camino, Calif., who was initiated into Hoo-Hoo at the first San Francisco convention (1909) and holds Hoo-Hoo number 22203.
