When the history of famous retorts is writtenand what a wonderful book that would make-close up to the top of the list will be ranked the retort made by a famous Frenchman to a still more famous Frenchwoman. The woman was the scintillating and much-loved George Sand. The man was one of her great loves, Jules Sandeau.

The love of Jules was growing cold. One day the famous Frenchwoman charged him with infidelity. Briefly he acknowledged his guilt. She struck a tragic attitude and exclaimed in a voice heavy with pathos:
