The candidate for Congress had lost the election, but was trying hard to be big about it. fle was preparing to send a message of congratulations to his successful opponent. He reached across his desk, and picked up the telephone. He called the telegraph office and gave the girl the name, and dictated:
Congratulations on your resounding victory. Permit me to extend to you my heartiest congratulations and to pledge you my wholehearted. support."
A moment of silence, then his anguished cry: "No, no, lady ! Don't read it back to me ! I couldn't stand it !"

By Adeline M. Conner
Just because a home he builded, Just because his flowers grew, Just because the dewdrops sparkled, And his friends were tried and true'
Just because the ocean charmed him, With its moonlit silver foam, Just because the songbirds warbled, All about the little home.
Just because the sunset's splendor, Flooded all the world with light, Just because he loved to wander, Through the fragrant groves at night.
Just because he loved the children, And the cheerful firelight's glow, Just because he loved the whole world, And all creatures here below.
Just because his soul was singing, At his work or at his play, When the angels came to call him, He refused to go their way.
"We11," said they, "he owns his own home, Rent he riever has to pay, Landlords cannot spoil his morals, If he won't go-let him stay."
Moral
(Even the angels respect the man who owns his own home.)
Free-er crnd Brover
Optimist: "The rapidly increasing divorce rate proves that America is fast becoming the home of the free."
Pessimist: "Yes, but the continued high marriage rate proves it is still the home of the brave."

Like a boy at splendors that have fledTo vanished joys be blind, and deaf, and dumb; By judgments seal the dead past with it's dead, But never bind a moment yet to come.

"That's a mighty bad cough you've got," said Jones. "Why don't you do something to get rid of it?"
"Not on your life," said Bones. "Whenever a life insurance salesman gets to bothering me, I just turn loose that cough and he doesn't stay two minutes."
Friendship Exploined
Mose and Sam were talking about friendship. Mose said:
"Sam, I'll tell you what a friend is. He's a fella whut treats you jus' de same way aftah he done got prospe'ity, as he done befo'."
"You is wrorg," said Sam, positively. "A true friend is de fellah what treats you de same aftah de viseversas has done got YOU."
Whot Free Speech Means
Know what free speech means? Charles Bradbaugh explains it in wonderful fashion when he says:
Without free speech, no search for Truth is possible.
Without free speech, no discovery of Truth is useful.
Without free speech, progress is checked and the nations no longer march forward toward the nobler life which the future holds for man.
Better a thousandfold abuse of free speech than denial of free speech. The abuse dies in a day; but the denial stays the life'of the people, and entombs the hope of the race.
How To Write

"I never study style, all that I do is to try to get the subject as clear as I can in my own head, and express it in the commonest language that occurs to me."
Charles Darwin

A little gold in one's heart, a little of the milk of human kindness and consideration in one's veins, and a little laughter in one's voice, are worth mo e than a lot of gold in the bank or pocket.
