The Retail Lumber Dealers Conference, sponsored by the Southern California Retail Lumber Association, was held at the Arrowhead Springs Hotel, San Bernardino, Calif', on October 2l and 22. Orrie W. Hamilton, the Association's E,xecutive Vice President, arranged an excellent program, all the talks rvere informative and instructive and held the close attention of the group, this being evidenced by the number of questions asked each speaker. Miss Kathryn Murray, of the Association's oflice staff, Los Angeles, was in charge of the registration. The business sessions were held in the Little Theatre.

Wednesday Morning

Ralph N. Baker, Barr Lumber Company, Santa Ana, and the Association's President, welcomed the dealers to the Conference, and Lathrop K. Leishman, President, CroWn City Lumber & Mill Co., Pasadena, presided at the business session.

The first speaker was Jack Cline, Manager, l'er.rples Lumber Co., Santa Paula, r,vho talked on "Currettt Problems Facing Retail Lumber Dealers." Homer l3urnabl', Vice President and General Manager of the Sun Lumber Co., Van Nuys, was the next speaker, his sul>ject being, "Let's Be Ethical." Clifford Go:ce, Personnel NIanager. Hammond l,umber Company, Los Angeles, s1>oke on "Cartage Costs vs. Revenue Received." James K. Lau'ler, I)rodttction Manager, Patten-Blinn Lumber Co., Los Angeles, discussed "Mill Costs." Thomas J. Fox, President, John W. Fisher Lumber Co., Santa Monica, u'as the last speaker on the morning program and he spoke on "l\Ierchandising Calendar for Lumber Dealers."

L. A. (Andy) Beckstrom, Jr., co-owner of the Arcadia Lumber Co., Arcadia, presided at the bnsiness session.

There \\ias a panel discussion on "Lunrber Buying From The Dealers Vierv Point" lvith Rex Clark. Executive Vice I)resiclent and General Nlanager of the Consolidated l-umber Co., Wilmington, as moderator. The panel included Ilobert R. James, N{anager, N{acco Lumber Co., Paramount; James \V. Sullivan, Vice President and Nlanager of Sullivan llardu'ood Lumber Co., San Diego, and Stuart \\r. Harris, Superintendent, Louniberrr'' & Harris, Los Angeles.

Other speakers at the afternoon session and their subjects rvere: "Selling The Retail Customer," Gale Stafford, Nlanager, Mullin Lumber Co., San Gabriel; "Self Service N{erchandising," Herschell G. I-arrick, President, Lumber & Builders Supply Co., Solana Beach; and "Progressive Merchandising," by Terry Mullin, President, TarzanaL:urr'ber Co., Tarzana.

Wednesday Evening

The annual banquet and entertainment u,as held in the Candlelight Room. President Ralph N. tsaker presided, and the speaker of the evening was Joseph R. Jones, head of the Real Estate Department and Vice President of the Security-First National Bank of Los Angeles, his subject being "Real Estate Trends." Prizes tvere awarded the ladies who held the lucky numbers.

Thursday Morning

Ben Bartels, Treasurer and General Manager of the Peoples Lun.rber Co., Ventura, presided at the business session.

President Ralph N. lJaker u,as the first speaker, his subject being "Point of No Return." He was followed by J. B. Snell, Accountant, Snell & Company, Los Angeles, who talked on "Inventory Control and Reiated Matters." C. Gilmore Ward, President, Ward & Harrington Lumber Co., Santa Ana, then spoke on "Profit fndex," and the last speaker on the morning program was Thomas J. Fox u'ho reported on the annual meeting of the National Retail Lumber Dealers Association at Las Vegas.

I-uncheon was served in the Candlelight Room.

Thursday Afternoon

Wayne Mullin, President and General Manager, Mullin Lumber Co., Los Angeles, presicled at the afternoon session. The speakers were Philip J. Stillrvell, Assistant General Manager, Hammond Lumber Companr', Los Angeles, rl'ho discussed "Accounts Receir-able Control N{ethods," and Joseph K. I{<irton, Attornel', Horton & Horton, I-os An51e1es, u'ho talked on "Recent Legal Developments Pertaining To The lletail T umber Industry.

The neu' builcling fronts 56' on Van Nuys Blvd., u'ith a depth of 40'. A displav floor,24' x 38'deep, occupies the center of the building flanked by a 17 x 35' deep stock room and a N' x 4C)' deep area containing sales counter, desks, manager's private office, toilets ancl record storage. The plate glass lvindorvs at the front o{ tlre display area are recessed 2' frtttn the building line. The recessed area is landscaped on both sides of the Van i\uys Blvd. entrance.
