Song Of The Pioneers

A river that sings in the trvilight, The fragrance oI laurel and pine, Old cabins desertecl and lonely, Dim trails tl.rat lead dou,n to a mine; The sighing of l'ind thru the tree tops, The gleam of the first evening star, And here on the shadou,y hillside

The gates of the past stand ajar.

And out fron.r its mystical portals

Come thronging our orvn pioneers, To light the old campfires at nightfall

And break the long silence of years. I list'to their songs and their laughter. Their voices are boyish and gay, They're telling again horv they gave us The Kingdom n'e're holding today.

They conquered the might of the mountains, They harnessed the turbulent streams, They toiled in the forests and gulches, Alone with their hopes and their dreams. They founded our to'n'ns and our cities, An Empire thev reared in the West; To the Land that insistently called them, Each one gave his strong "level best."

Great rivers that sing in the twiliglit, Vast forests of fir and of pine, Fair valleys and u.onderful cities, The rvealth of the field and the mine ; These, these are the gifts they bequeathed us I3y doing their strong "level best ;" So here's "to the hearts still beating, And peace to the hearts at rest."
