NHLA Meets in Chicaso
Harry D. Gaines, St. Louis, l\'Io., was re-elected president of the National Hardwood Lumber Association at the 56th annual convention held at the Sherman Hotel, Chicago, on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday, October 6-8. Convention sessions were held in the mornings only.
The members re-elected three vice presidents: James C. Walsh, Chicago, T. M. Millet, Louisville, Ky., and Franklin T. Griffin, Chicago. Joseph L. Muller was re-elected secretary-manager,
Directors chosen for terms expiring in 1956 were: John W. Bailey, Laurel, Miss. ; Bernard Bock, Montreal, Que.; Charles C. Cathey, Memphis, Tenn.; Lawren,ce D. Kellogg, Alexandria, La.; J. K. McCormick, Charlestown, Mass.; H. J. Plunkett, New Rochelle, N. Y.; Frank J. Connolly, Los Angeles, Calif.; John E. DuBois, Jr., DuBois, Pa.; Ed. C. Schoen, Chicago; A. C. Sconce, Omaha, Nebr. ; S. J. Staniforth, Montreal, Que.; and A. R. Copeland, Chicago. George Houghton, of Goodman, Wis., rvas elected to fiIl the unexpired term of J. C. Rodahaffer, ending in 1955.
President Harry D. Gaines greeted the members at the opening of the convention on Tuesday. morning and presented his annual report under the title "Let's Pull Together." In his report, he reviewed the importance of the Association in the day-to-day activities in the hardwood industry, as a l'i'hole, and pointed out the necessity of close cooperation if our industry is to grow and progress. He stressed the fact that our Inspection Staff had handled a record volume of over 279 mlllion feet this past year which sho'r,ved, he declared, the ever-increasing dependence of the industry on the Association's inspection service.
He spoke of the favorable reaction that the industry has given to the Association's educational program, to the Inspection Training School in Memphis, and, also, to its Field Representative rvork. He urged that members be ever alert to take advantage of the opportunities offered at the School for young men preparing to become more efficient in the hardrvood business and to go out of their way in lining up candidates for the School. He likewise urged that members avail themselves of the refresher courses on hardwood lum- ber grading pointing out that over 40 courses had beer, held this past year. Mr. Gaines assured the members that the Association was in strong financial condition and in the hands of an able and efficient staff.
Other speakers at the Tuesday and Wednesday morning sessions were K. O. Ross, president of the Canadian Lumbermen's Association; George A. Bowie of the Public Relations Department, Firestone Tire and Rubber Co.; T. J. Connolly, president of the Dean Company, Chicago; H. A. FIanlon, Cotton-Hanlon, Inc., Odessa, N.Y.; and Gene Flack, sales ,counsel for the Sunshine Biscuit Co., Inc.
The concluding feature of the Wednesday morning session was an open forum on the subject, "What the individual lumberman can do or is doing to further the rvelfare of the hardwood industry." Stanley F. Horn, editor of the Southerri Lumberman was moderator. The forum \{as participated in by a large number of lumbermen.
The Thursday morning session included talks by Secretary-Manager Joseph L. Muller, who presented his annual report; L. C.. Nicely, director of the McClure Training School;James Quigley, a student in the l1th class of the school; J. P. I{ammer, chairman of the Rules Committee; and Frank Jones, T. T. Jones Lumber Co., Minneapolis, Minn., ,chairman of the Junior Conference, who reported on the group's activities during the year,
The annual banquet and entertainment vvas held Wednesday night and drew a capacity crowd. Following the dinner, the entertainment prpgram entitled "Karnival Kapers" was enjoyed by the large group.
During the convention over 500 people visited the Hardwood Exhibit at the Museum of Science and Industry through the courtesy of the Hardwood Exhibit Committee and the Association.
More than 1300 lumbermen from all parts of the United States and Canada attended the convention.
