EDITORIAL

A Word of Thonks

f TSUALLY IN THIS space in the magazine we try lL/ to devote ourselves for the most part to subjects that warrant serious study, discussion and comment. Subjects that afiect most if not all of us who do business across the West.

But this month we want to say something that has nothing to do with marketing, merchandising, buying, selling, size standards and all that. What we have to say, simply, is thanks.

The thanks we ofier are for all the nice cornments you have had for us with regard to our changing the name of the magazine to Western Lumber and, Build,in g M aterials M erchant.

Frankly, as we hinted around in first explaining the changeo we were a little nervous about tle change and how some of our longtime readers (some from the first copy, 45 years ago) would go for us changing the name. I-Ionestly, we were afraid that perhaps the winds of change had not aired out the entire industry.

We shouldn't have worried. Your response was better than anything we could have hoped for. And it reaffirmed, for the umpteenth time, our faith in our business and the people in it.

We think it goes to show tkat American business, even during a depressed time, such as it is now for some of our readers, recognizes progress. That a new, more accurate name and an expansion of circulation area and news coverage to include the entire West indicates that we reflect the confidence of all when we say that the present trouble in lumber and building materials is by no means a permanent condition. Like many of our readers and advertisers we put our money where our mouth was and went ahead with the expansion.

So it was doubly gratifying to all of us connected with'the magazine that your response was so solidly in favor of the changes we had made.

Thanks again.

NewArizono Column

TN THIS MONTH'S issue we are pleased to bring I vou for the first time a new column on soutl*".t".r, retailers that will be appearing on a regular basis.

It is called The Arizona Scene and is being written by Frank Davis, the secretary-manager of the Arizona Raail Lumber & Builders Supply Association. Frank Davis took over the reins of the Arizona asoociation moro than a year.ago from GusMichaels, who had been head man with the Phoenix-based group for many years.

Frank's first column, appearing on page 42, tells of the plans of the Salt River Valley HooHoo club in Phoenix and how they pla4 a Forest Products Fair to tie in with National Forest Products Week which runs from October 16-22 this year.

Frank has a good source of news in that Phoenix club, as they are one of the best and most active in the country, not to mention the rest of his area.

The Arizona Scene joins the columns that two other retail association bxecutives write monthly for The lflerchanr. They are Bob McBrien, executive vice president of the Lumber Merchants Association of Northern California, whose group covers northern California and Nevada, and Ross Kincaid, executive vice president of the Western Retail Lumbermen's Association which covers Washington, Oregon, Idaho and Alaska from its Seattle, Washington office.

To Frank Davis, a hearty Welcome Aboard!

...for customers who are looking for prefinished decorative wood paneling with real beauty, unusual durability and a low price tag

Here's the answer you've been looking for to fill your customer's remodeling needs. Ven-O-Wood paneling is natural wood veneer permanently bonded to a solid flakeboard backing. This combination gives Ven-O-Wood outstanding advantages over ordinary plywood paneling or printed hardboard paneling.

Uniform thickness assures smooth joints between panels. The patented f lakeboard backing provides exceptionally strong, highly dent-resistant panels with no core voids or defects to show through the finished surface. The exclusive 7-step

Long-Bell prefinishing process gives lasting beauty with a mar-resistant finish.

There's just the right combination of wood and finish to meet any remodeling need: 1/q' - 4'x 8' panels in pecan, elm, walnut, oak, cherry, birch, knotty cedar and knotty pine. 55And now a word from the man who

In honor of this election year, we sent identical letters to the incumbent and the candidate for governor in all the eleven western states. The theme being, "if elected, what will you do for the lumber and building materials business?" The total response may be seen on this page. You can draw your own conclusions, but we don't think it augurs well for the industry. Incidentally, for what it's worth, all those who responded were Republicans.-Editor.

The Mercha.nt

Dear Sirs:

As Governor, I will take steps to bring new industry to California and encourage ..-expansion of industry already here-among

theen, steps that wiil get our building industry moving again.

The building industry has been hit five times harder in California than in the rest of the nation. Building permits are down 49 percent from last year, mortgage foreclosures are up 38 percent and property tax delinquencies are the highest since the depression bottom of the I930's.

I have devoted considerable time talking to prominent industrialists about the economy of California and about what can be done to get the state out of the current building doldrums. These authorities verified that California's tax laws and unemployment insurance costs make it difficult for big industry to locate in California and make them reluctant to expand plants already here.

Every lumber dealer must be aware of the effect of the inventory tax on his business. As Governor, I will establish a system of credits permitting a partial writeofi of inventory tax payments against state franchise taxes and eliminate the inventory tax as rapidly as possible. This tax is an obstacle to improvements of California's business climate.

Indusrrialists tell me the Governor iust

The Merch,ant

Dear Sirs:

Your letter was not sorry that the deadline saw it.

ignored; and ['m passed before I

But, right after the election, I went for a tweday rest in the mountains and then

doesn't seem to care about our statets worsening business climate. He has made little real effort to attract the plants which would be a shot in the arm to the building industry and would also provide jobs.

I have proposed that leaders of Cali fornia industry and labor help me devise a plan that will bring additional business into California. The lumber industry can make an important contribution to this plan.

There will be a major undertaking to ma.ke personal contracts with expansionminded businesses all over the nation, aimed at convincing them California is not only people-oriented and job-oriented, but is also business-oriented.

Every efiort must be made to reduce the skyrocketing costs of government - the cause of high taxes. As Governor, I will appoint outstanding representatives of business and the professions to government posts. Their aim will be to put our state government on a business-like basis; this will include continuing investigations into every state project to make certain it is necessary and cannot be reduced in size.

The lumber industry is a vital part of California's economy, and my administra. tion will give it the recognition and consideration it deserves.

Ronald Reagan

into Tucson; and the request for a statement on what I would do for the retail lumber and building materials dealer reached me ftoo late].

Sincerely,

The Merchant Dear Sirs:

The retail lumber and building materials dealers throughout the western states are vitally dependent on a stable timber industry.

Oregon is getting hit doubly hard in the present crisis in credit. We sufier from the same inflation as the rest of the country. At the same time, the stability of our itate's largest industry is in jeopardy because tight mortgage money is drastically cutting the number of new home starts in Oregon, and elsewhere in the country.

On August 9, I telegraphed President Johnson asking that he support measures designed to end this "Crisig in credit." I recommended to the White House:

(l)Termination of the Participation Sales Act of l966-which increases interest rates by allowing "backdoor" federal spending.

(2) Allowing mortgage loans to reflect 1966 market values by removing the Federal National Mortgage Association's $15,000 administrative limitation on purchase of mortgages under its secondary market operations.

(3) Reduction of non-essential, non-defense federal expenditures in order to keep federal spending as close to income as possible.

On August 13, I wired Oregon's Congressional delegations, urging support of a measure to pump over $3 billion into the Federal National Mortgage Association.

Families needing to build or expand their homes must be able to borrow money at reasonable rates of interest. These families, the lumber industry and the retail lumber and building materials dealers must not be made the 'oscapegoat" of governmental efiorts to control inflation.

As a state official, I will continue to work for a more favorable economic climate for the forest products industry.

Sincerely,

:'

DAVIS IUMBER SAYS:

Get the carry-away items up front and nail down those do-it-yourself dollars

66fT'S WHAT'S UP front thar counrs."

I A tired old cigarctte commercial. perhaps, but a slogan that hundreds of western dealers are finding most appropriate during the recent building slump. Simply stated, dealers with a good store up front and an aggressive retail merchandising prograrn have enjoyed reasonably good business this year; those geared strictly to builders, whether large or small, have had their problems.

Sure it cos:s real money to remodel, to say nothing o{ increased inventories of often expensive store items, but with the right location and management the retail trade is more than worth the time and capital layout.

Wayne Davis, manager of Davis Lumber Sales, 13685 San Pablo Avenue, San Pablo. has long enjoyed a good contractor business, but also he has been increasinelv aware that the operation was lopsided..-Hi. Io"u. tion was right and the walk-in trade was there, so it was not a gamble, merely a good investment, to triple the size of his existing store and go all out for his share of the do-it-yourself dollar.

Wayne's investment has paid off handsomely. Store and fencing sales have soared. an especially welcome development in view of the currently lagging home-building picture.

This is not to say that dealers should turn their backs on the contractor. His dollars are important too. But the old adage that "contractor and retail sales don't mii" is simply not true.

Outside the Davis store, screen doors and wheelbarrows-still in the carry-away items category, await buyers. Throughout the interior, well-placed sales racks attract the customer's eye, while screwdrivers, pliers, wrenches and a bevy of other items needed for the do-it-yourselfer, line walls of wellmarked display sections.

If we must adopt a new proverb, let's use

the old one of "don't put all your eggs one basket."

Today, hundreds of western dealers mighty glad they didn't !

Southwest Dealers eye and buy at double-header hardwood shows

T t MBER DEALERS FROM throughout L California and Arizona put on their hardware hats last month and headed for a double-header put on by two of the Vest's largest hardware distributors.

Several hundred lumber dealers attended the annual exhibitions of Great Western Hardware and American Wholesale Hardware, whose shows, coincidentally, fell on the same weekend.

American Wholesale swung open the doors to their huge Long Beach, Calif. warehouse on September lI for their an-

nual "Sales Galaxy" featuring 106 booths displaying the wares of more than 160 manufacturers.

Merchandise discounts ranging Irom 5/o20% and hourly prize drawings attracted dealers from a 300-mile radius, including a strong contingent from King Lumber's yards in Bakersfield, Taft, Wasco, and Shafter.

Dealers H. F. Betts and R. W. Betts of Palm Lumber Co. in Los Anseles walked off with the show's grand prize - $l-000 in merchandise at retail. Other prizes in-

cluded a $2,000 outboard motor boat, a silver -.ervice set and mink stolcs.

"It was a real selling show," commented Norm Orwig, American's sales promotion manager, who added that sales volume was considerably ahead of last year's show.

Great Western Hardware devoted the entire weekend to their annual o'Merchandise Roundup," converting their 107,000 sq. ft. Santa Fe Springs warehouse into a show' room for 220 booths representing 330 manufacturers.

WORLD'S I.ARGEST BUILDING SUPPLY FIRM

The Wickes chain opens another one

V/ICKES, the Cash & Carry King with YY headquarters at Saginaw, Michigan, established its fourth retail building supply center in California with the opening of a multi-acre center in Petaluma.

The new operation is patterned closely after its three other California cousins in Salida, Fowler and Ontario, and its stated sales policy is identical to that of the other three centers.

Wickes bills itself as o'the largest building supply firm in the world," and the

Wickes started a small machine shop in Flint, Michigan, moving four years later to Saginaw to be closer to Michigan's thenbooming lumber industry. In those days Wickes made rnachinery for sawmills and their companion salt blocks, which used exhaust steam from the mills in salt production.

This was the beginning of what now is Wickes Machine Tool Division which manufactures lathes, milling machines, crankshaft turning lathes for the automotive in-

company currently operates several high grade graphite mines in Sonora, Mexico, producing specially processed graphite for the nation's steel mills and foundries as well as in the manufacture of thousands of household, business and industrial items.

The present Wickes Corporation was born in 1947. when the three divisions were merged. In the early 1950s a program of further diversification began with the acquisition of a chain of country elevators, some of which handled lumber and building materials. This was the beginning of the Wickes Lumber and Building Supply Div.

Shortly after getting the country elevators, management opened an experimental cash and carry store at Bay City, Michigan, the beginning of what today is "the Iargest building supply firm in the world.oo

The lVickes policy is simple. The Lumber and Building Supply Division sells only for cash as its policy structure makes no provision for credit losses and overhead. The usual numerous outside financing plans, of course, can be arranged for the customer in any center.

There is no "free" delivery. If customers are unable to haul their purchases away, delivery is arranged with outside haulers at the normal rate. These rates are published for inspection in each center.

RUnAt

Wickes store in Petaluma, Calif., can be clearly seen in this

company operates centers from coast to coast and from Minnesota to Texas.

Originally, these yards sold only lumber. But in 1961, plumbing, heating and electrical supplies were added. Today, the Wickes centers sell everything needed to build a complete home, with the exception of masonry products.

The history of Wickes is an interesting one, and begins in 1854 when Henry

dustry and a wide variety of other heavy duty equipment.

The lVickes Boiler Division, once a division of the machine shop, was organized as a separate company in 1907. Today, there are thousands of Wickes boilers in use in industrial plants, military bases, hospitals, schools and atomic energy plants.

The United States Graphite Division of Wickes was orsanized in 1891. and the

Service is 'ofirst come, first served." To avoid a mixup, customers are asked to take a number tag from a rack provided just inside the front door of each center. When his "number's upr" the customer is accompanied by a salesman from the time his order is placed until the material is loaded. Payment is made for material after it is loaded. If a customer requires an item not inventoried, a special order will be placed for a nominal deposit.

Wickes's newest center seems to follow a reasonable policy of locating on modestpriced, semi-rural property, but at the same time well within the buying sphere of nearby high density population centers. The address is 54O0 Petaluma Blvd. North.

Norl D. Cochran is manager of the new Petaluma center, and Leonard B. Lamerton is the assistant manaser.

HIS UNUSUAL and stunning home has been desigrred to face an interior court and not a busy street. The design should especially appeal to anyone planning to build on a minimum size lot and who ap. preciates and desires privacy.

Here is proof that a sens€ of elegance is not at all incompatible with modern architecture. The home has a kind of charm that is easy, natural and unpretentious. Yet, it has considerable style and distinction and is not at all the typical house you see on the typical suburban street.

Clean-cut and crisp lines distinguish the exterior of this contemporary modern house. The front wall, plus the entry porch, is surrounded by a stucco frame which accents the modern sweeping lines of the design.

This simple rec[angular house is the least expensive shape to build. You will also obtain more for your building dollar as every inch of space in this compact house has been planned for maxim'- uee.

An analysis of this plan illustrates how well it is zoned into formal, informal and sleeping areas. The more {ormal living room and dining are at the front of the house.

kitchen. The kitchen serves the formal dining room, the atrium and the family room with equal ease. A large window provides the informal nook area with a wide view of the atrium. This nook area is partially separated from the family room by a screen grill.

The heart of this floor plan is the atrium. It is not roofed so that outdoor living can be enjoyed in private throughout the year. This built-up area has a quarry tile floor and.four sets of sliding glass doors open from the house to provide complete access to this important outdoor room.

Industry Leaders Dedicate Tree Farms

More than 70 people took part in a recent field trip for members of the California State Board of Forestry, sponsored jointly by American Forest Products Corporation, California Division of Forestry and the U.S. Forest Service.

Charles T. Gray, president of American Forest Products, opened dedication ceremonies at Hermit Springs, and hosted a

luncheon for tour participants. Tree Farm dedication ceremonies followed the lunch"ot.u, introduced prominent persons who have contributed substantially to the forest products industry in professional, consultancy and governmental capacities.

Bernard L. Orell, president of American Forest Products Industries and vice president of Weyerhaeuser Company, spelled out a positive picture for the private sector.

ooPrivate enterprise," said Orell, 'ogiven an oportunity to realize a reasonable margin on investment, is stimulated by profit to intensively manage tree growing lands to produce both successive crops and compatible wildlife, water and recreational opportunities. Profrt provides the incentive for true conservation."

Orell also said tree farming is geared to a balanced economical picture, where profit to create investment capital for future jobs, permanent enterprise, community stability, better products and development of management programs, are among contributing factors determining successful tree farming operations.

Others on the program included J. R. Rushton, general manager of AFPC's Amador-Calaveras division (under whose direction the 126,000 acres dedicated to the tree

Teale, California state senator; and E. L. Kolbe chief forester, Western Wood Products Association, who presented the three Tree Farm certificates.

Forest Mq,nqgement Being Studied

How much a forest can be managed by people, and how much it can or should be left alone are still largely unknowns, University of California researchers are learning in a series of forest experiments in the middle Sierra. Most important, they are unknowns to park and forest managers and legislators who make forestry decisions.

On Whitaker's Forest, a UC experimental area in the Sierra, university forest scientists are trying to get answers.

Experiments in hand-clearing thickets of understory trees, in light burning to prevent new thickets from growing up, and in seeding or planting trees that are wantedSierra redwoods, ponderosa pines, and sugar pines-are being carried on.

There are two main objectives: develop. ing methods to reduce fire hazards, which is critical in that area of the Western Sierra slope, and manipulating the forest to protect its beauty.

Code Speciolist Fies Retires

A quiet, mild-mannered, grey haired gentleman had a birthday in mid-August. He was 65 and was retiring August 31. A group of his friends and associates, 50 or so, gave him a surprise party complete with speeches and birthday toasts.

But this was no ordinary gentleman, nor was it an ordinary occasion, for the man was John Fies, for nineteen years western regional manager of the National Forest Products Association's building code department.

An engineer, a specialist, totally dedicated and totally professional, John Fies worked in almost complete anonymity to improve the climate for wood products. Universally respected by his peers, he contributed tremendously, working patiently behind the scenes to change the course for construction requirements through the established democratic procedures of the model code authorities.

John Fies merits the respect and grateful thanks of the lumber industry. As Mortimer Doyle of NFPA said: "We owe what we are today to you . . we shall never forget your magnificent contribution to the entire forest products industry; to good housing, and to the proper understanding of the role of the building official and the various publics he represents."

John-we salute you, and we wish you well in your new role as consultant in fire protection, building and housing code problems. Fies' address: P. O. Box 426, San Carlos, Ca]if. 94070.

APA's Turnbull Wins Awqrd

The American Plywood Association has won the Management Achievement Award presented annually by the American Society of Association Executives, an organization of 2,200 top directors of trade and professional associations in the U.S.A. and Canada.

The award cited James R. Turnbull, plywood association executive vice president for "his demonstrated leadership, knowledge and experience. This award exemplifies the professional executive in the association field," said Clifiord M. Clarke, president of ASAE.

All Qsiel on the Redvvood Front

There have been no new altercations between five large California redwood companies and the federal government since their dispute over the redwood park site was settled in Washington, D.C. a month ago.

In the agreement, the companies promised to cease cutting of park-quality redr, goods on certain proposed parklands.

The 'ocessation of hostilities" was announced at a conference called by Senator Harry M. Jackson (D. Wash.), chairman of the Senate Interior Committee, and Senator Thomas Kuchel, (R.Calif.), ranking member of the Senate.

They disclosed that the five firms had voluntarily pledged their cooperation with the federal government to end all cuttings and to work with Interior and Congress for a redwood park acceptable to all.

Involved in the battle with the government were Simpson Timber, Arcata Redwood, Georgia-Pacific, Miller-Rellim Redwood and Pacific Lumber Company.

Housing Slowdown'TemPororY' New Conslruclion Boom Seen

The critical home construction slowdown is only temporary, is partly psychological and will be followed by "an all-time record buildins rate of at least 2 million new units u y"u.,t' one of the nation's top building materials industry spokesman has forecast.

W'illiam H. Hunt, Portland, Ore., executive vice president of Georgia-Pacific Corp., told a meeting of the Pacific Northwest Advisory Board that "many potential home buyers now are being frightened out of the market by scare talk concerning mortgage interest rate increases."

Such increases in many instances amount to less than the cost of a pack of cigarettes a day, he pointed out, and even that is re' duced with each monthly payment.

"We should return to selling rather than gloom peddling," he der:lared. "Rising pro' duction costs built into our economy should be of much more concern to those now delaying a home purchase."

Hunt criticized members of Congress who have boosted already-high budget re' quests for non-emergency programs, label' ing such spending "a major cause of tight money." He praised the administration's recent moves to help curb deficit spending.

Hunt also minimized fears of western plywood producers who feel expansion of production in Southern states threatens their markets. He said the upcoming housing boom "will tax both regions just to keep up with demand and stay within the bounds of good sustained yield timber growing and harvesting programs now rvell established. Each region will set new records."

He forecast a I00 percent increase "at least" in plywood demand by 1975, and said the nation's housing needs are estimated at 65 million units over the next 25 years, "substantially above the 2 million a year market we see immediately ahead."

West Coast Lumber Inspection Bureau has asked the U. S. HEN IT COMES to celebrating a Golden Anniversary, I'm told you look around for the nicest spot you can find. That's iust what has happened with our National Lumber and Building Material Dealers Association they have selected Lake Tahoe as the site of their 50th annual meeting, October 28 thru November 1.

We are delighted that the national looks upon the Golden State in such a {avorable manner and we know that dealers and manufacturers from every state in the union will find our locale of great interest and attraction. But what about our Cali' fornia and Nevada dealers?

meeting at Lake Tahoe are re-lated this month Franklv. this is one of the best reasons bv Bob McBrien' 1 can thi;k of for planning a trip to Lake Tahoe, It has been a number o{ years since t-he last national meeting was held in San Francisco and thus our dealers haven't had such an excellent opportunity to participate. Now's the time!

It's part of my job to attend all NLBMDA annual meetings and I can report to you that it is most interesting to observe the ac' tivity. Mo€t of the work sessions are handled committee style cov' ering such topics as legislation, marketing, research, industry relations, etc. Attendance is excellent and participants greatly increase their knowledge of the subject matter.

Aside from the meetings, there are numberless opportunities to meet in even smaller groups with dealers from other areas and "chew on" common problems. As any convention or meeting-goer will tell you, these "bull sessions" often pay for the trip via solutions and new ideas which add to the profit picture.

The Lumber Merchants Association of Northern California is most anxious'to have as many California and Nevada dealers as possible attend the NLBMDA annual meeting In fact, we are even holding our board of directors' meeting in conjunction with the national meeting on Sunday morning, October 30.

Full details on the meeting have been sent to mernbers via National Neps. The agenda looks like a good one and we hope that we will find you there taking part. Use this opportunity to Iearn more about your industry representative in Washington.

NEWS

HETHER TIGHT MONEY or no, the lumber and building material dealer keeps busy. For those who cater to the consumer or home modernization market, there seems to be a growing activity according to reports in our office,

Should there be time to spare, the Western activities this Fall season will take up the slack. In other issues we have reported on our Dynamics of Selling System Conferences, the 2nd Annual All-Industry Marketing Conference, the current pilot industry training program association-coordinated with community colleges. (The latter is now off and running at Green River College in Auburn, !flashington).

Drawing sizeable attendance, are the 19 district meetings, now underway in three states. Nearly 100 members are participating as resource panelists in these meetings desigrrated as "Idea Exchange Sessions." From three to five dealers participate as

panelists in each meeting with a brief kickofi on a topic that he selects. After the initial presentations, question and answer periods provide a good exchange of information for all.

The interesting part of this is that those dealers who participate as panelists at a district meeting are selected from outside that marketing area to assure that new ideas and methods are offered for consideration.

Suggested topics from which the panelists make their selection are:

FALL 1966 DISTRICT MEETINGS

Suggested ldea Exchange Topics

(1) Success stories and/or unsuccessful stories.

(2) Centralization vs. decentralization (1 large operation or several locations).

(3) Employee-employer relations (policies, recruiting, incentives).

(4) Materials handling, warehousing, yard layout.

(5) Credits, collections, discounts,

Weslern Lumbcr & Building lloicrlolr 'MERCHANI terms, legal problems,

(6) Procedures on referral of calls.

(7) Written company policies (employees, suppliers, customers, credit).

(8) Setting up and handling of prospect files.

(9) Job descriptions.

(10) The handling of returned merchandise.

(11) Market specialization.

WRLA President Ansel Hyland of Eugene, Oregon and his board of directors asked that this type of program be implemented on a 19 district basis, following three successful years of this activity on a three meeting state sharing of ideas.

Survey Checks Soles Chonnels

National-American Wholesale Lumber Association has analyzed the results of a Western Wood Products Association study of Western sawmills during 1965 with particular regard to the distribution channels used by these mills.

Two-thirds of the total from the coastal region of the West was sold through wholesalers and nearly 70 percent of all lurnber ship' ped from the inland region of the West went through wholesalers according to the survey.

to more and more California dealers and distributors. For year around supplies of dimension lumber and precision-trimmed studs, depend on D & R and these 4 Oregon and Washington mills:

Old Growth Fir Dlmension from F.S.P. Lumber Co., Port Orford, Oregon

Hemlock Studs from Warrenton Lumber Co., Warrenton, Oregon

Hemlock Dimension from Westport Lumber Co,, Westport, Oregon

Douglar Fir Studr fiom

Shepherd & Dasher Lumber Co., Longview, Wash.

The next largest distribution channel, after lumber wholesalers, in the case of coast region mills was the 'oDirect-to-Retailer" category which accounted for I7.7 percent of all shipments. In the case of inland region mills, the second most important distribution channel was the 'oDirect-to-User" category (including local sales) which accounted for ll.6 percent of shipments. The direct-to-user category, WWPA points out, includes direct sales from a mill to an industrial plant, sales to the governm€nt, etc.

The overwhelming importance of the lumber wholesaler as the prime channel of distribution for the Western lumber industry, according to NAWLA spokesmen, is even more significant when it is recognized that the WWPA survey covered 87 percent o{ the 1964 cut in that area. In the case of the inland mills, the survey covers 9 billion board feet, roughly 88 percent of the 1964 cut in the inland reeion.

New Process Gets Tryout

Construction of a pilot plant for the electron'beam curing of paint coatings on wood products is underway by Boise Cascade Corporation. The plant is an outgrowth of a three-year exclusive license agreement between Boise Cascade and Ford Motor Company, which developed the unique curing process in a search for a better method o{ bonding paint to metal surfaces.

Fast, regular ocean shipments by barge from Southern Oregon and the Columbia River direct to Southern California.

Now, over 5,000,000 feet of dimension lumber and studs monthly manufactured especially for Southern California construction needs.

Art Neth would appreciate an opportunity to tell you how you and your customers will benefit from using dependable D & R dimension and studs. You can reach him by calling 872-1280 or 783-0544.

Pine Group Aids Deqlers

"Stock millwork of ponderosa pine available at your local lumber dealer."

This phrase, Ferd E. Hammes, president of Ponderosa Pine Woodwork, told the association's recent 25th anniversary meeting, sirmmarizes the group's original sales approach and its dedication to the dealer. "Our purpose today," he said, "is exactly the same-to promote woodwork products. And the woodwork manufacturers represented by PPW sell through the woodwork distributor and building materials dealer."

The meeting was attended by more than 100 representatives of firms which produce ponderosa pine and manufacturers who use it in making windows, panel doors, and other items.

Hammes referred to the promotion report and how the association helps dealers sell stock millwork. The program includes full color advertising in national magazines with the intriguing headline "The Better Homes in your Neighborhood have Wood Windows. Have vou noticed?"

Wood Roofs Continue Goins

Despite a declining record of housing starts during the 1960's, the red cedar shingle and handsplit shake industry has managed to steadily improve its position.

The Red Cedar Shingle & Handsplit Shake Bureau in Seattle, has noted that the average number of squares of shingles and shakes (one square equals one hundred square feet of coverage) produced per housing start has increased from 3.364 in 1959 to 5.068 in 1965.

Virgil G. Peterson, secretary-manager of the bureau, attributes the production gain to "a renaissance of interest in shingles and shakes among American architects," and to product diversification.

Nel Lumber Use Declines

A three-year study of single-family houses conducted by the U.S. Forest Service and the Federal Housing Administration, reports lumber consumption per house was just about 10,000 board feet in 1959 and L962.

But only 130 feet more were used in '62 than in '59, while the average floor area of the single-family house had increased, leaving a net loss in lumber per house. Losses were noted particularly in lumber volume used for sheathing and floor and roof decks, amounting to 3B/o in the three-year period.

Flying Sky Hook Successful

A twin-hulled balloon, first of its kind in the world, is capable of lifting giant logs from the floor of the forest and providing the world's first aerial logging road!

The balloon, developed by Goodyear Aerospace Corp., has been put into service by Bohemia Lumber Company, who's president, Faye Stewart, says he expects continued satisfactory results from the oosilver ox."

Balloon logging eliminates damage to young trees, gouging of tlle forest floor, and accumulation of debris, thus eliminating the need for slashing fires, officials reported.

The skyhook is 162 feet high, 88 feet wide and is filled with 175,000 cubic feet of helium. It can sail along at 25 miles an hour.

New Wyoming Kilns

Moore Oregon recently placed a new Moore prefab cross-shaft type kiln into operation for Wyoming Sawmills, Inc. of Sheridan, Wyoming. The double-track kiln is 33' x 70' f.eet long and is used primarily for drying lodgepole pine.

The steel framework kiln building has prefabricated aluminum roof and wall panels with aluminum sheets outside and inside, joined with Wedge-Seal vapor-barrier type construction. This unique Moore me thod of construction has no rivets or panel sheet joints exposed to inside kiln conditions, thus eliminating any possible vapor leakage through the joints. Insulated wraparound corner panels are used to entirely eliminate corner joints and any possible leakage.

New J. H. Boxfer Plqnts

The steadily increasing demand for two of its pressure-treated wood p.roducts, fireretardant Baxco-Pyresote wood studs and Chemonited wood, has required J. H. Baxter & Co. to expand treating facilities at two of its West Coast plants, according to W. W. Jackson, vice president of sales.

At Baxter's.Alameda plant, capacity has

been increased by the addition of a large new pressure treating retort 8 feet in diameter by B0 feet long. Chemonited poles, piling, decking and other lumber, as well as Pyresoted studs are being processed.

Faster service also will be available for Chemonited products in southern California with the installation of treating equipment for the popular salt wood preservative. This makes it possible for area users to make direct pickups at the plant on special orders or from stock, according to Jackson.

Fire-retardant Baxco-Pyresote studs are now availa, ble from plants in.Eugene, Oregon, and Weed, Alameda and Long Beach,

California. Chemonite wood products are pressure treated at all above plants, except at Weed.

Lumbermen lost on Conodion Flight

As we went to press, an intensive air rescue operation had been called off after b fr.uitless, three-week search for a private phne carrying Frank M. Crawford of the F. M. Crawford Lumber Co., Ukiah, Calif., his wife Vivian and two other lumbermen.

Their plane had been lost on a flieht from Ft. Smith to Edmonton, Canada. "

With Crawford and his wife were Earl

Vivian Crawford, a seasoned pilot, was flying the craft when it left Ft. Snith at 9 a.m. on September 7. Sixteen minutes later they made their last radio check as they headed ofi in lS-mile visibility for Edmonton, 450 miles away. The plane, a Twin Cessna 310, has a 1,000 mile cruising range and they carried ten days food supply.

More than a dozen private planes sent upby northern California lumbermen ioined one of the most intensive combined searches in U.S.-Canadian air history.

The Crawford's son Bill, also a pilot, was continuing the search on his own.

WWPA Semi-Annuol Meeting

', Forestry affairs, programs and problems I of the new lumber grading rules, a powerful i'_.new movie linking forestry and promotion ' together for the first timeo and two na- tionally-known speakers highlighted the ,. 'Western Wood Products Association's semiannual meeting in Portland, September 14-16.

The "acceptor" poll soon to be taken on the new I/2 lumber sizes "may be the last opportunity that the entire lumber industry lrr will have to prove it is capable of setting ;: its own standardso" L. L. Stewart, president of WWPA said.

o'The new AISC proposal is a rnilestone

in the struggle toward efficient use of lumber," stated the Oregon manufacturer. He called on the industry "to combine its energies for its own preservation and advancemen! and for the benefit of the wood-using public."

Boyd L. Rasmussen, newly appointed Director of the Bureau of Land Management, the key speaker said, "I have no plans for sudden changes; no plans for dramatic action. I do have plans for solid, constructive achievements. which we will work out cooperatively as we proceed to meet the challenges which confront us."

Key luncheon .p"ak"r was Arthur W. Greeley, associate chief of the Forest Serv-

ice, who said the Forest Service has embarked on a major pioneering study which would change the rates of timber harvest on the National Forests of the Dguglas fir producing regron. The study, which will involve national forest management for at least the next 80 years, is scheduled for completion about July l, 1968, Greeley said.

The film, *Thc Mighty Western Forest" is aimed at the general public and takes an initial step toward informing the average man-in-the-street of the wise and efficient use of our tree-growing land, regardless of ownership. At the same time, it does an intriguing and persuasive selling job for the wood products md.nufactured by tr/WPA member companies.

Weslern Housing Storts Drop

Housing starts nationally declined a bit more in August, the latest figures availablg and a steeper drop in building permits suggested that the construction slump will deepen in coming months.

At a seasonally adjusted annual rate of I,057,000 units, private-housing starts fell 2ofr flrom July and a sharp 26/s flrom the 1,427,W rate of August, 1965, the Commerce Department has revealed.

tu#

The latest month-to-month move wasn't nearly so severe as the 16/o plunge that brought July's rate to I,O81,000 units, revised upward from an estimated 1,064,000. The percentage change wasn't affected because the June figure was also revised upward, to 1,285,000. The July figure was the lowest since 1960.

Across the entire West a seven month comparison of building permits shows the Pacifib region down 3 percent and the Mountain region down 15 percent in single family dwellings, while multiples are down 38 percent in Pacific and 34 in Mountain states.

The total West is down 18 percent in housing starts over the same period last year, the department said.

LASC Areo Meetings

On October Il, the LASC completed a series of eight area meetings for all members of the lumber industry in southern California.

The members of the industry were given information as to the association's activities concerning workmen's compensation insurance, comprehensive business insurance, long term disability insurance, and the activities of Western Building Material Dealers Association. This latter group is the legislative voice, in Sacramento, of the building material dealers throughout California.

All areas nominated new directors for 1967, and were shown a slide presentation on how dealers can make money,

Almost X)% oI Great Western's member stores gathered to do their fall buying and take a look at what's new in products and services.

"Our dealers not only came to look, they came to buy," enthused Arnold Poolg general manager. "Almost $1 million in merchandise at list was purchased during the Roundup," he added. o'One manufacturer, Sunbeam Corp., wrote more than $200,000 in sales at list."

With all that buying, dealers worked up quite an appetite. During the show they polished off 300 lbs. of peanuts, 400 cases

of soft drinks and 2200 box lunches.

Citizen's Lumber Co. drove back to Reedley, Calif. in the Roundup's grand prizea brand new'67 Ford Mustang.

When the show closed Sunday night, clean-up crews went to work knockingdown displays and it was "business as usual" when Great Western went back to their regular schedule of order filling at seven o'clock on Monday morning.

Dear Dave,

Congratulations on your name change. The new name is consistent with changing conditions in the industry.

Your unique September issue with two covers certainly affords subscribers the opportunity of becoming acquainted with the new name and associating it with the well known and well read California Lumber Merchant.

Keep up the good reporting job and certainly your magazine with the new name will be even more successful than tlre CLM was.

Sincerely,

Jerry Hickey

Dear Jerry

California

Just a note to say congratulations on your new name and the magazinets ttnew look" "The Merchant" was certainly the logical choice for a new name, since that's what most of us have been calling the the magazine for years.

We've also been making some changes here at our yard that would probably be of interest to other western dealers. Stop in to say hello when you're in our neighborhood.

Again, our congratulations. Bill Doherty, manager Mullin Lumber Co. San Gabriel, Calif.

The Merchant David Cutler, Hello Dave.

Congratulations on your new name!

This should [increase] the acceptance of this magazine in the northwest.

Best Regards, Ross G. Kincaid

Dear Dave,

From the many comments I've heard, I'm sure f speak for all our dealer-members in California and Nevada in applauding your new name and all the improvements that went along with it.

Changing with the times is in the best spirit of our industry . keep it up. And keep up your fine news reporting.

Cordially,

Max Cook

The Merchant Dear Max,

The story in your August issue regarding Reedley Lumber Company inadvertently reported the wrong man. ft should have been Paul Ruth rather than Earl Ruth, as Earl runs the Parlier Lumber Company in Parlier. I am sure that Paul would appreciate it if you could run a correction in the next issue.

Sincerely yours, Bernard B.

The Merchant

My dear Al:

We were all very much interested in reading your article on DESIGN:WOOD in The Merchant. TVe certainly enjoy, and I know the craftsmen will enjoy, having our gallery known as an Eden. All the exhibits are not only interesting in what they present, but they explore difrerent themes every six weeks.

We were so fascinated ourselves by what has been achieved in wood that we look forward to having another exhibit with even more interesting examples of wood next year. In the meantime, the California Redwood Association is ofrering us material and will give us advice on the roof garden, which is in the planning stage. This will be desigled by the well-known architect Jim Leefe, who will be assisted by Barton Davis, an equally well-known interior decorator.

Again, we were very pleased to have your interest, and appreciate the article.

Sincerely,

Ernestine Carpenter

New Mosonite Ponels

Three new decorator panels-French walnut, Kashmir pecky teak, and Jacobean oak -have been introduced by Masonite in an expansion of the company's popular Royalcote line of woodgrained paneling.

A companion to the Diplomat paneled walnut pattern introduced a year ago and now renamed American walnut, French wal- nut is a traditional style, book-matched panel in a light, champagne color.

The lighter colored version of Pecky teak -Kashmir-is a decorator vyhite. Its surface is embossed with simulated pitch pockets, insect holes and wood distress marks.

Photo on right shows dramatic tonal nuances of the new panels.

Jacobean oak is the company's answer to the challenge of another design style-
