Faith in Business

If we got nothing more from Bruce Barton's book, "What Can A Man Believe?" than just his remarks on the great part that FAITH plays in modern business (as a matter of fact the entire book is filled with interest to the man whose mind is free), we would still be greatly over-paid for our investment of money and time in the volume.

Take just this one paragraph, for instance :

"No man can stay in business except through some measure of FAITH. It is impossible even to discuss business without using that word again and again. You hear

An Editorial

men say: 'The whole modern commercial structure is built on a foundation of credit.'And what is credit? Where does the word come from? CREDO: I BELIEVE. Business is good or bad, the statisticians point out, according to the degree of confidence. What is confidence? Whence comes the word? CON-FIDES: WITH FAITH. 'Such-and-such a concern is weak,' men say, 'because its personnel lacks fidelity.' FIDELITY : FIDELIS, FAITHFUL."

And Barton concludes in his own words: "Faith in business, faith in one's self, faith in other people, faith in the country-this is the power that moves the world."

History relates many interesting stories concerning the relationship that existed for years during the Civil War between Abraham Lincoln and Secretary Stanton.

Stanton was very ""c; ""1 0", with an officer who had disobeyed an ordei, and he told Lincoln about it. He said "I have a mind to write him a letter and blister him, take the skin off." "Do it," said Lincoln. "Do it now while you are in the mood; cut him up."

So Stanton wrote ;t, uia ni.a i with fire, and read it to Lincoln, who approved it highly. "Who shall I send it by?" then asked Stanton. "Send it?" said Lincoln in surprise. "lMhy, you mustn't send it at all. Tear it up right away. You've got it off your mind by writing it. Now destroy it. It's all right to write such things, BUT NEVER SEND THEM."

Here's another famous story about Lincoln and his friend Stanton. "\Mhat did Stanton say?" asked Lincoln of an officer by whom he had dispatched a very pertinent message. The offrcer hemmed and hawed. "What did Stanton sav?" demanded Lincoln.

"Stanton said you were a d-d fool," admitted the officer. A grim smile came over the gaunt face of the President. Finally he said: "We11, I've known Stanton a long titne, attd I find that he's usually right, so he probably is in this case." Ancl that closed the incident, permanently.

Nfany world famous philosophical remarks are credited to Lincoln, but he probably established his masterpiece when he said: "God must have loved the common people. He made so many of them."*

"How much does great prosperity overspread the mind rvith darkness ?" asked the wise Seneca.

Hardboard Products Developmenf Adds Large Volume to Retail Sales

T\EVELOPIIENT of new hardboard

l/ products for the construction industry means sales of $25 million annually for the nation's building materials dealers, the Forest Products Research Society was told at its annual meeting in Louisville, Kentucky.

Walter C. Walling, president of the Am eri can Hardboard Association (AHA), described the impact of hardboard developments on retail sales as part of a discussion of the rapid growth of the industrv.

He said that dealers' sales of hardboard products average $8,000 to $10,000 annually and that some dealers realize sales of as much as $50,000.

The American economy currentlv is using some two and one-quarter biliion square feet of hardboard annually, of which about one-half billion is'pur- chased through retail lumber dealers, Walling said.-

Historicallv. hardboard

has doubled every eight

From 1951 to 1959 there cent gain, he said.

10o/o Annual

consumption to ten years. was a 113 per

Increase

In analyzing the annual increase of approximately l0 per cent, Walling attributed 15 per cent of the gain to population growth, 40 per Cent to greater acceptance of hardboard for established uses and 45 per cent to the development of new uses or excep- tional expansion of acceptance of oldir ones,

He noted that about 50 per cent of the hardboard surface footage consumed in this country is ){th inch standard board. It is offered in a variety of qualities. About half of the /eth standard board is a price-competitive, general purpose utility produ-t wellknown as a wood-structural material that saws, nails, and staples like wood. Up t9 a certain size, it ii used to cover openlngs or to act as a partition.

Walling pointed out that although rrtth inch hardboard showed the great- est footage gains in sales in recent years by a considerable margin, p€rcentagewise, the increase for r/ath inch

standard has been particularly noteworthy. This product's increase he attributed to new uses or exceptional expansion of old uses.

The development of interior specialty wall paneling has been the most impressive, wood-grained printed panel- ing being the outstanding example, providing a pleasing appearance at an economical price. There are a number of textured panels, Walling pointed out, that are derived by engraving press plates to give such effects as basketweave, ribbed, louvered, and brushed plywood surfaces.

Successful Series

Another successful series of wall paneling products has a clear, pigmented sealer applied over light colored boards that have been random Vgrooved, U-grooved or channelgrooved. This style of product is offered perforated for acoustical ceilings in areas as kitchens where it would be difficult to clean regular acoustical tile.

It is also a practical product for ap- plication in high abuse areas where damage resistance is desired. Backed by a fiber-glass batt, a hardboard acoustical ceiling provides heat insulation as well as sound correction as good as acoustical tile.

Tempered hardboard, Walling said, is a very important type. In recent years, some uses, at least in part, have shifted from tempered to standard. He attributed this to required qualities

now being available in special types of standard board and also to new and improved processing techniques, such as reverse-roller-coat filling, although tempered is definitely required where better water resistance and stability, better hardness and abrasion resistanc-e, or better painting qualities are needed.

Walling pointed out that the hardboard industry makes a vital contribution to the conservation of natural forestry resources through its utilization of wood residue. The industry uses more than one million tons of wood annually that could not be used in the form of lumber or plywood, he said.

Effective Research

He cited the effective iob wood product researchers have done in the development of hardboard. Today's challenge, he pointed out, is the development of new products with high use potential.

"This is the responsibility of the basic research people as well as the manufacturers. Each have their place in this need."

At the same time, it not only provides sales volume for the wood products industry but also helps reduce over-all costs by giving value to raw material that was formerly wasted," he said.

Walling credited research for the introduction of the original hardboard in 1924 and for the introduction of new processes, products and uses, especially since World War II.

He predicted a growing potential for the use of hardboard by the construction industry for siding and urged members of the Forest Products Research Society to conduct basic research into further improving hardboard for this purpose.

"As lumber diminishes in availabilitv and increases in cost, hardboard's opportunities in this use will expand," he said. "But we need help to best develop the qualities of moisture stability, paint retention, application features and cost."

A moior technologicol breokthrough in the development of fcctory prefinished wood siding has been onnounced by The Pocific Lumber Compcny, Son Froncisco. lllustraled is one of seversl demonstrotion houses plonned lhroughout ihe country. This firsi house, in Polo Alto, Colifornio, wos constructed in cooparotion with Doug Couch General Contrqctors, Inc. Mr. Couch is Regionol Vice President of the Notionol Association of Home Builderc.

Maior Step Toward Prefinished Wood Siding

Revealed by The Pacific Lumber Company

A MAJOR technological break- / \ throtlgh in the development of factory prefinisl-red woocl sicling has been aurrourrced by The Pacific Lumber Company. News of the important accomplishment was made coincident with the completion in Palo Alto, California, of tl.re first of several demonstration houses planned throughout the tlnitecl States. \\rilliam G. Var.r Beckum, Vice President for ltesearcl"r and Development at Pacific, macle the disclosure and addecl : "This is tl-re first time that an entire house has beer.r

sicled with a completely prefinished paintecl wood sicling requiring no paint- ing on the job site. This particular installation is prefinished PALCO kiln clried, vertical grain redlvood siding."

X{r. Van Beckum pointed out that the Palo Alto demonstration house is the first of several planned in preselecte<l regions throughout the country. Cooperating on the first house was home builder Doug Couch General Contractors, Lrc. NIr. Couch, Regional \-ice Presiderrt of the National lAssociation of Home Builclers, voiced enthusiasnl for the on-tl-re-job advantages of the new PALCO prefinishecl siding, serying: "It not only helps cut our in-place costs, but gives us a finish with more sales appeal, that we believe will last longer, and end the heaclaches ancl expense of going back to a job to take care of paint blistering cornDlaints."

Van Beckum state<l : "These demonstration l-rouses are part of our plan to help us accluire facts relative to the builder's installation costs when he uses completely prefinished wood sidins. \\rhen the fir.ral demonstration house is completed. any desirable sys- tem refinements u'ill be incorporated prior to marketing PALCO prefinished sitling."

unique 'breathing features' of the fastening system will materially increase paint life by reducing the incidence of blister-causing moisture from within the house."

A precision Steinemonn Cultqin Cooter is used by Pscific to ossure uniform opplicotion of finish pcinl. In sddirion. the siding is bockseoled to furfher ossure reduction of the incidence of blister cousing moisture from within the house. Pocific wqs lhe first compcny to utilize rhis proven Steinemonn equipment for lumber.

The sicling was prefinished at Pacific's Scotia, California, mills, using a precisior.r Steinemann Curtain Coater, rvhich assures a uniform application of finish paint. Van Beckum revealed that the sirling is back sealed, adding: "We believe that the combination of back sealing, uniform machine finishing and

Van Beckum emphasized: "Our demorrstration houses are not designed merely to test paint performance, but rather to test the entire prefinished siding concept and thus piovide us with experience in the storing, shipping, handling and installation of completely prefinisl-red wood siding. \\re have put every phase of this program to severest test-from initial plans to final installation, so that The Pacific Lumber Company can back prefinished siding as completely as it stands behind the quality ancl performance of its other products."

An irnportant feature of the Company's prefinished system is the elimination of nailing through the siding.

Proteclive polyethelene coqted poper pockoging is used fo prevent shipping domcge to the foctory opplied finish point. The first opplicotion of Paciftc's focfory pcint finish wos mode on PAI,CO kiln dried, verticol groin redwood siding.

This results in a final end to the occurrence of paint failure at nail heads. Also, since nails do not go through the siding, damage that might result from careless nailing is precluded.

The elimination of r-railing through the siding is accomplished with a clip fastening system, which also helps reduce installation time through its selfaligning feature. Several clip systems are being tested, with one developed by the California Redwood Association predominately used in this first house. The fastening clips are nailed to the studs or sheathing and fit into a groove

along the butt edges of the siding. This assembly results in a snug installation, yet permits natural ventilation to help Drevent moisture condensation on the back side of the siding, thereby eliminating the main cause of paint blistering on wood siding.

In summarizing his company's technological breakthrough in prefinished wood siding, Van Beckum concluded: "This is the first step towards achievement of a uniform, enduring completely factory-applied paint finish for woocl siding. With the advantages of uniform machine application of material meetirg FHA requirements and use of

highest quality paints which can be specially formulated to take advantage oi uniqlle factory techniques and thorough factory quality control, we shalt nbt only have achieved a woo<I finish that will stay new looking longer and recuire minimal maintenance, but we will have made a significant contribution towards lowering the builder's in-place cost. Combining the-se- accomplishments with a concealed fastening system that permits natural vetltilatibn to help prevent moisture condensation from within, we are moving toward the end of the bothersome blistering problem."

CLIS Establishes Quality Confrol Standard for New Wood Product

,T,HE CALIFORNIA Lumber In-

I spection Service, in conjunction with Park Loading Company of Eureka, Calif., has recently published a grading rule to establish quality control of a new product, to be known as "Redwood Brick."

The potential of the item is high. The general use, at present, is for low cost, rustic housing, vacation homes, resident entry walls, partitions, garden walls, planter boxes, garages, and playhouses for children. Being of redwood and well-matched in assembly, any object constructed of these bricks is most appealing and striking with the Red Heartwood and White Sapwood.

with one face forming the inside wall, the other face forming the outside wall. The 3ft" thick completed wall has an insulation value equal to 36,t of solid concrete. Finishing only requires varnishing the inside, and log oiling the outside.

upper and lower sides. The brick is manufactured in 1' lengths and multiples of 2', including 6? lengths, with a possibility of also including 8'. The longer lengths are used over door and window spans. Two 16 penny nails, evenly spaced per 2' of length, are driven vertically down through and into the lower adjacent brick. No nailing shows on exposed surfaces. The end section of the present manufactured brick is Zsl"x3s/s" overall.

The source of the brick stock is 3!'x4' random length 'fOld Growth," or "Second Growth" Redwood. Also, the source may be lower grades of Dimension Redwood and Dimension Cull Redwood, from which sound cuttings can be obtained, which otherwise would end up in mill burners. Medium size knots which are sound and tight are not objectionable; in fact, they enhance the appearance of the completed object or wall.

lcdwood brick rhowing dcroil of rncnufocturc.

Installation is a readvmade "do-ityourself-er" item. Any person with a saw, a mitre box, and a box of 16 penny nails may erect anything from a complete house to a small garden wall. The walls are constructed as."single wall,"

Tolerance in manufacture is critical, and Park Loading Company has installed precision machines which mill the brick as accurately as possible. A slight clearance is milled between the matching surfaces of adjacent bricks for sealing with mastic or caulking. The brick is dried to 15/o M.C., then surfaced with "V" corners and T&G end matched and T&G matched on the

The "Wood Brick" idea is not new. It was invented by Sr. Enrique Marchetti of Chile, South America. They were first used in Chile for low cost, self-help houses. These houses have been built and tested for four years. The tests have proved wood bricks are a substantial and practical building material. They are- still the strong houses they were when they were built; in fact, they are the only houses that are still standing after the recent severe cuakes in Chile.

Wood Plays Vital Role In Space Research

A LARGtr SUGAIT PINE borvl la' 111111q1 rlevelopmerrt by Campbell Pattern Works, Los Nietos, made from pine supplied by Los-Cal Lumber Company, Los Angeles, rvill be used by Space Electronics Corporation to store liquicl alcol-rol as a way of simulating the earth's ionosohcre.

'l'he corrvex bor,r'1 is l4 [eet in diameter, 'lvith a 10 foot spl-rerical radius. Tlre concave bowl is l5l feet in diameter. lvith a l0rl loot radius.

Doug Girarcl of Los-Cal Lumber reports that the project required more than 6,000 feet of sugar pine. Stock had to be 20 inches or wicler, air dried Iumber.

A smaller bowl rvhich has been coated rvith metalspray and polystyrene foam will be placed into the licruid. The smaller bowl simulates the earth and the air immediately above it. Together the bowls represellt a laboratory moclel of the earth, its air and its ionosphere on a scale of one to trvo million. Space electronic scientists will use tl-rem in an Air Force project for investigatir-rg the transmission of electric signals over long distances rvithout wires. The signals are to emanate from beneath the earth, travel along or slightly above tl-re earth's surface, and ultimately will be received at a station beneath the earth.

By using the scale model, the scientists can derive information regarding the characteristics and design of the communications system much more quickly than they could from full scale operation.

Modern Wood Preserving Plant ls Part of Southwest Forest Industries' Expansion

Southwest Forest Industries' expansion program includes a modern wood preserving plant which is now in production at Prescott, Arizona. The first production has been ties for the company-owned Apache Railway Company for maintenance and track at the new $32,000,000 pulp and paper mill at Snowflake.

Strategically located in the central part of Arizona, the Wood Treating plant will produce Ponderosa Pine utility poles for power and telephone companies. Other treated forest products will undoubtedly be added to their production, including mine timber, dimension lumber, fence posts, barn poles and many miscellaneous uses. All species can be treated in transit through Prescott for rail shipment to points having through rates, and truck deliveries can be made to jobsite destinations promptly and at low cost.

Warren Hoyt, well-known in the treating industry, has been commissioned with the sale and servicing of treated materials by Southwest Forest Industries, Inc.

California sawmills produce Ponderosa Pine lumber at an average annual rate of about 1 billion board feet, of which 56 percent is used in millwork, box and various other types of manufacturing.

A Bunch of the Boys Were Whooping lt Up

EARLY 100 Mendocino County lumberman-and a sprinkling of "wetbacks" from the San Francisco Bay Area-had an afternoon and evening of fun and good fellowship at the Black Bart Hoo-Hoo Club's annual swim and barbeque on July 28. Scene of the action was again the Bill Moores' residence, an all-redwood (naturally) showplace nestled in the foothills overlooking Ukiah, and sporting a swimming pool which would surely float an LST or near equivalent !

The always popular event got underway shortly after 4:00 p.m. with a most welcome dip in the aforementioned "pool" and a short walk (the first of several) to Moores' poolside lanai where the club's dispenser of good cheer was ready and waiting with cold beer, or a jigger of "the usual."

One Occqsion When q Rubber Stqmp is GOOD!

Harvey Koll of Los Angeles, who has himself been advertising the "National Forest Products Week" stamp in the pages of The California Lumber Merchant, reports that business has been good. Over 100 of the stamps have already been sold in the Los Angeles area.

We believe that the lumber industry can do still better, however. This is such an effortless, inexpensive yet effective way to promote National Forest Products Week-by imprinting your outgoing mail with the stamp. If you haven't already done so, why not order a stamp, along with green ink pad-but you have to furnish the ink-now ? Send your cheik for g2.dO to H. W. swung into action with their mass of portable barbeque equipment, the object of their affections some 100 pounds of choice steak which had been hung to perfection.

The Black Bart Annual Barbeque is a strictly fun affair where once a year any lumberman with enough petrol left in his tank to make Ukiah can relax with his friends and suppliers and enjoy the brighter side of the lumber business.

Its annual "fun meeting" for the year spent, Black Bart Hoo-Hoo Club 181, under the leadership of Swen Gummer, got back down to business in August as the club met at the Big Oaks in Calpella on August 16 to hear Jack Pfeiffer's searching appraisal of the lumber industry. Pfeiffer's talk"Lumbei Distribution Present and Future"-1rya5 one of the features at the recent N-AWLA annual in San Francisco.

Merger of Lumber Firms Announced

Merger of the Independent Lumber Company of Grand Junction, Colorado, and J. F. Anderson Lumber Company of Minneapolis-with combined annual sales approximating $12 million-was announced at the end of July.

Headquarters of the new firm, temporarily named the J. F. Anderson-Independent Lumber Company, have been established in Denver.

Its officers include W. C. Kurtz, Colorado Springs, chairman of the board; John V. Dobson, Minneapolis, vice chairman; and Richard M. Dobson, Minneapolis, president.

The Independent Lumber Company has operated_2O lumber yards in western Colorado and eastern Utah. The Anderson Company has 43 facilities in Minnesota, Iowa, South Dakota. and Northern Colorado.

Arcata Redwood - Today!

A RCATA Redwoocl Company, a California Redwood A. Association member mill. reientlv completed construc- tion of a brand-new all-electric double band sawmill at Orick. California. some 40 miles north of the comoanv's old mill site at Arcata. One of the most modern installations of its type in Humboldt County, the new mill (called Mill "A") is located just three miles from the compar.ry's logging operation and its billion and a half foot timber reserve.

Reduces Log-Hauling Costs

"We formerly hauled logs, including bark and waste, at a much higher Per M rate than the cost of trucking rough green lumber to our Brainard remanufacturing plant, that factor alone reflecting a considerable economy," president and general manager Howard A. Libby notes. As well as eliminating a 4O-mile long log haul over public highway 101, Mill A offers an abundance of room for expansion not available at the old Arcata plant which hacl become a victim of progress, being surrounded by city residences, businesses and the ever-present freeway system.

Completely geared for mechanical handling, N{ill A sports some 20 acres of yard area which is completely black-topped to allow ease of decking according to size and grade with a huge Le Tourneau log stacker. Mill A is located just one mile from l\{ill B at Orick, thus supervision and maintenance of both mills is greatly simplified for superintendent Willard lIengen, as well as procluction problems for Lester Coe. Mill B is primarill' s..6 to cut smaller logs while Mill A tackles the "big ones." Combined capacity of the two mills is in excess of 40.000.000 bf. annually.

Basic units of the all-electric mill include a Sumner 9 foot headrig and a Sumner 7 foot pony rig. Cants are transferred from the big headrig to the pony for breakdown and the layout of the mill is such that small logs can supplemer-rt cants in feeding the pony. Two new I. \Ar. Johnson eclgers, an 8x72 ancl a 4x50, keep lumber flowing away from the band saws. Both trimmers are 24' I. W.

Johnson overhead units and a Sumner 2-block carriage with a 90-inch opening serves the big band. The other carriage is a 3-block Sumner with a 52-inch opening and Selectric remote setworks. The burner and all steel work was erected by Eureka Boiler works and the mill was designed and construction supervised by ARCO engineer Ralph Ricci.

All rough green stock is transported by ARCO's truck fleet to the company's Brainard remanufacturing operation on Highway 101 just nortl-r of Eureka for further sorting, drying, milling and shipping. All shipments, both rail and truck, originate from the Brainard plant which is also the location of the firm's recently completed general offices.

Improvements at Brainard Plant

Recent improvements to the Brainarcl plant include the installation of an Irvington automatic double end-trimmer on the rough dry sorting chain. This minimizes trimming of top grades of lumber at the sawmills and enables tl-re company to sl-rip smooth end-trimmecl stock. Late in 1960 a large shipping shed was completed at Rrainard for tl-re rlse of the truck loading clepartment heacled by Norman Sarvyers. Loads can now be assembled, tallied, loacled on the trucks ancl tarDed all under roof. With most of ARCO's loads containing a portion of kiln dried stock, this assures the customer of dry lumber upon arrival

Still more imDrovements to the Brainard olant include construction of a ner,r' truck shop, the installaiion of a new moulder, improvements ar.rd refinements in the paper-wrap-

A lot of changes? Yes-and Arcata Redwood management isn't through yet. Other plans are "on the drawing board" which company officials feel will keep them abreast of the fast changing times existing in the lumber industry today and continue to make Arcata Redwood Company an attractive source for the customer with an eye to the future.

Whqt Aesop Tought About Cooperotion

A husbandman who had a quarrelsome family, after l-raving tried in vain to reconcile them by words, thought he might more readily prevail by example. So he called his sons and bade them lay a bundle of sticks before him. Then, having tied them up in a fagot, he told the lads, one after another, to take it up and break it. They tried, but in vain. Then, untying the fagot, he gave them the sticks to break, one by one. Tl-ris they did with the greatest ease. Then, said the father: "Thus, rlly sons, as long as you remain united you are a match for all youl enemies; but differ, and separate, and you are undone."

Liffile Things

Oh, it's just the little homely things, The unobtrusive, friendly things, The "Wont-you-let-me-help-you" things That make our pathway light. And it's just the jolly, joking things, The "Never-mind-the-trouble" things, The "Laugh-with-me-it's-funny" things That make the world seem bright. For all the countless famous things, The wondrous record-breaking things, Those never-to-be-equalled things, That all the papers -cite, Are not like the little human things, The every-day-encountered things, The just-because-I-like-you things, Tl-rat make us happy, quite !

So here's to all the little things, The done-ancl-then-forgotten things, Those "Oh-it's-simply-nothing" things That make life worth the fight.

Hondy H'ints For Business

Mr. Ole May

The California Lumber Merchant

Dear Ole:

Whenever economic conditions depress our lumber industry into an oppressively competitive situation like we have today, I think we are all inclined to wring the crying towel a little too dry.

So I decided to conduct a little survey among my friends in the business, in an effort to probe the actual depths of our deplorable and gloomy plight.

I contacted a Los Angeles retailer who was at his Carmel home for several weeks of golf at Pebble Beach and he wrote "My game is way off-like the business back home." A cable to a wholesaler friend who is on a Safari in Africa brought the following reply "The big game hunting is awful-competition for lions over here is almost as bad as it is in the California lumber industry." Another friend who operates a mill in Northern California declined to comment on the grounds that he wasn't up to date on current conditions in the lumber industry, ,because lately he has been busy in another field. It seems that he suddenly discovered that he owned two more Cadillacs than he could conveniently get in his garages.

I had in mind discussing our dilemma with several other lumbermen, but their yachts were out of radio range. Others were either on the way to the bank or out looking for business so my survey turned out to be pain- fully inadequate and abruptly terminated.

However, I did overhear a conversation that will be familiar in some aspect to almost everyone in the lumber business.

I was calling on a customer, doing a little work for my boss, The Geo. M. Huff Lum,ber Company, 116 W. 116th Street, PL 6-8191 (not that we are looking for a free plug) and a character, whom we can easily call Hairy, began talking to a counter man by the name of Joe.

Hairy (shifting his tobacco plug): "I want to buy a board for my wife."

Joe (politely): "What are you going to use it for?"

Hairy: "I don't know what she wants to use it for; something around the house, I guess. That ought to give you a pretty good idea."

Joe (patiently): "What specie, sir ?"

Hairy (blankly): "Specie."

Joe: "Do you want Fir, Hemlock, White Fir, Spruce or Pine?"

Hairy (blanker than ever): "Holy smoke, I don't know. She didn't say."

Joe (still polite): "What size board do you need?"

Hairy (stretching his arms):

"Oh, about yea wide and so 1ong."

Joe (grimly): "How thick?"

Hairy (who now thinks he has it made): "Oh, just thick enough so it won't break. I don't know what she is going to use it for."

Joe (heatedly): "I can te1l you what she can do it with it. She can . (editor's note): "Good heavens, Joe, you couldn't tell him that!")

Joe (grimly regaining his com-

posure): "What grade do you want ?"

Hairy: "Anything, it don't have to be very good."

J oe (desperately): "H ow good ?"

Hairy: "Oh, anything just so it's cheap and don't 'have no knots."

Yours, very truly, GEO. M. HUFF LUMBER CO. Bill

He Could Keep o Secrei

A kindly faced little Italian was standing on a street corner, waiting for a street car. He had been shopping in the market, and his arms were piled high with bundlei so that he could ,hardly move a finger. One of the bundles slipped from its place on top of the pile and fell to the ground, and the little man was trying to figure some way to pick it up without dropping other bundles.

A gentleman standing close by saw his predicament, and he picked up the bundle and put it back in its place in the little man's arms. There was much gratitude in the man's face as he said:

"I tanka you, Sir."

The gentleman said: "Don't mention it."

The little man looked puzzled, then smiled. He said: "Alla right, my frand. If you donna want me to, Tony don't tell nobody."

Wendling-Norhon's "Duke" Celebrqtes 85rh !

On August 8, a San Francisco lumberman who long ago earned the nickname "Duke," celebrated his birthdal'. What's so special about a birtl-rday you ask? Well, there's two rather special things about it-first, it happens to be his 85th; second, the distinguished gentleman in question is none other than \'[aurice I-. "Duke" lluphrat, who is more than just a "Dllke" in the eyes of the countless huudreds o{ persons rvho have had the good fortune to shake his hand.

The "Duke," as anyotle would krtow after spending even a day in the lumber bttsiness, is the head of -t_he respected San -Francisco lumber concerll of \Arendling-Nat1-ran Company which itself will be 57 years _youllg this -coming November. Duke and the late Rov Hills not only built Wendling-Nathan into oue of the largest businesses of its

A native San Franciscan, Duke graduated f rom the University of California in Berkeley in 1898, and took his first job in lumber with Wendling Lumber Company at 6th and Channel Streets in San Francisco during 1904. 'I-he epochal Euphrat-Hills combination began that same year when a young fellow named Roy Hills came to work for Wendling Lumber as a bookkeeper-cashier. About this time The Pacific Lumber Company, which operated a distribution yard right across the street, bought out Wendling's competitive yard and both Euphrat and Hills remained on under the new ownership, Duke becoming assistant yard manager.

In 1906, Cross I-umber Company opened a distributing yard in San F rancisco, and Duke was put in charge of city sales. A year later Duke returned to Wendling Lumber Company where Roy Hills was no longer keeping books, but had become a salesman.

Wendling Lumber was succeeded by the WendlingNathan Company, whose business spread to many far flung territories besides California. In \974, the company was liquidated and the owners retired-but Duke and Roy were just getting their second wind.

They promptly incorporated after receiving permission to continue to use the name-on November 17, 1914 to be s;13sf-a1d tl.rat was the beginning of a company which over the years has built one of the finest reputations in the irrdustry.

Solute lo L.A. Women in Gonstruction Group

A salute to 'Women in Construction was the subject of recent radio broadcasts in the "Building Southern California" series sponsored by the Building Contractors Association of California.

The program presented on July 24, and again on July 25, paid particular tribute to the Los Angeles Chapter of the National Association of Women in Construction, citing the rapid growth of the local group of women actively engaged in businesses, profession or services covering the construction industry.

"Wisely, architects, engineers and contractors have brought highly trained women into responsible positions within their designing and construction firms and their presence has contributed much to the progress of the industry," the program noted.

The Los Angeles NAWIC Chapter is in the midst of a membership drive. Anyone interested in joining should contact the membership chairman, Grace Scheible, at W. J. Shirley, Jr., 880 E. Colorado St., Pasadena, MIJrray l-6956.

Retailers Can Get School Jobs!

,TiHE TREMENDOUS boom in school construction has I no end in sight. In 196l,it has been estimated that new school construction spending will reach $3.7 billion, and this figure may be expected to rise correspondingly with the increase in new pupils far into the future.

IIow can retailers get their share of this huge market? There's no stock ansrver, of course, but there are a few short cuts and methods that have been used successfully in the past and can be adopted by almost any individual retailer.

First and foremost, the retailer should follow the school project from the very beginning, and not pick it_ up_ only wh6n bids are called for. A steel or concrete school certainly will not benefit the retail lumber dealer, and it behooves him to do everything in his power to present the case for wood.

School board olficials and architects are constantly looking for new ideas and information on building products. T[ey receive much of this information thiough their. own sources, of course, but a personal call (or two or three) from the local retail lumbei dealer, who has armed himself with factual data on uses, costs, specifications and advantages of wood, often will turn the trick, giving wood an even cha.rce from the beginning where otherwise it would not have been considered.

Lumber manufacturers support retailers wholeheartedly in this crucial initial phase of school planning' Several associations have extensive literature and technical information useful to school building officials and architects. West Coast Lumbermen's Association, for instance, has published several booklets dealing with the technical uses of West Coast lumber and its application to school construction. The Association also offers a booklet entitled TODAY'S BETTER SCHOOLS ARE BUILT OF WOOD, which deals with soecific case histories of wood schools. Another helpful item in WCLA's school package is an article which explains in detail horv and why the city of Tacoma, Washingion has used wood almost exclusively for its school construction in the past few years.

Another help to the retailer is the "School Kit" offered by the Nationil Lumber Manu{acturers Association. Also available from NLMA is a color and sound motion picture on wood schools.

A New D'ry Felt ond llst Formlng Process

A U.S. Patent has recently been granted to Judd Brown of 101 Hilldale Drive, San Anselmo, California covering a rather simple and unique method of basic mat formation adaptable to multiple applications.

Under directional control of alternating

"G" forces, organic or inorganic fibers are arranged into a closely intermeshing relationship. An outstanding feature of the process is the uniformity imparted to the homogeneous mass and the speed at which it is accomplished, whether the end product is in fractions or of multiple inch thicknesses.

Low densities are accomplished without binders for such use as insulation blankets. sound deadening and packaging. Or, with binders, the density may be increased many times, thus eliminating the necessity of a pre-press in the case of manufacture of medium to high density hardboards. It appears from preliminary experiments that the process will lend itself equally to the shaving and particle board field.

As Mr. Brown ,points out, this may be of particular interest to those contemplating greater use of saw mill residue because of

the simplicity and versatility of the unit. He states that he plans to make the patent availa, ble to firms on a licensed basis. Also, that I.re has the f acilities for laboratory sample production and will cooperate with any firm wishing a demonstration.

Remodeling-Modernizotion Interest Spurred By Georgio-Pocific Sqles Aids

Interest in home remodeling and modernizatior.r is racing ahead of even optimistic forecasts, an official of one of the nation's largest building nraterials mauttfacturers has revealed on the basis of natiortu'ide field reports.

"It startecl a few weeks ago, with several l.runtlred major remodeling contractors arouncl the nation asking for our newly developed remodeling sales aids, ancl l'ras mqsh. roomed into several thousand requests almost over tright," according to S. 1r\'r. In late July the company offere<l to remodeling contractors, through their building materials dealers, f ree individually name-embossed briefcases filled 'ivith new aids to help both the contractor and his ctlstomers in planning remodeling projects.

"We were satisfied when several hundred requests were received, indicating considerable interest in the huge $13 billion U.S. horne remodeling market," accordir.rg to lr\rhite, who has charge of G-P's nationwide system of distribution branches.

"Suddenly these orders, placed by dealers through ou-r local branclies, passed the 5,000 mark, all going.to remodeling contractors^with an eye on-vastly improved new produ.i. and much easier uew financing just being made available.

"Now the total has passed 6,500 and we've become one of the biggest free plasfic brie{case 'distributors' (unexpectedly) iJ well as developing a big, -new-market for fa-ctory hnisi-red natural hardwood plywood wall paneling," White said.

Industry Stondord For Single-Hung Wood Windows Being Considered

The wood window industry is considering the establishment of a Commercial Standard for Single-Hung Wood Window Units according to the Commodity Standards Division, Office of Technical Services, U.S. Department of Commerce.

Single-hung wood window units are prefabricated assemrblies of two vertically stacked wood sash in a window frame wherein only the bottom sash operates freely and

is weather stripped and balanced. The new standard was requested by the National 'Woodwork Manufacturers Association, Inc., and, if it is approved, will be the llth Commercial Standard for sash and door millwork items sponsored by this trade group.

Many other interested organizations, including home builders, distributors, and architects have participated in its earlier development. The standard's adequacy and general desirability are being determined by the Department so that it may be established with the voluntary endorsement of the trade, and become widely efiective through national recognition and general use'

Copies of the Recommended .Standard, T3-5474A, are available without charge, while the supply lasts, from the Commodity Standards Division, U.S. Department of Commerce, Washington 25, D.C. (DUdlev 6-1207)

Retoilers Cqn Get School Jobs

(Continued, from Page 40)

How does a retailer find out when and where new schools are to be builti'There are several sources. The State Suoerintendent of Schools publishes information on {unds available for school construction, and where they're to be directed. City and county school officials, of course, have first-hand knowledge of future building plans. Local construction or commercial trade papers often announce school building plans well in advance of material determination. And contractors have an uncanlly ability to learn about imminent construction projects.

Proponents of non-wood schools have three favorite hurdles to put in the lumberman's path. If these arguments are carefully analyzed, they are found, in most cases, to be invalid. Briefly, the arguments are :

1. Non-wood schools are automatically fire-safe. This is not true. Most casualties in school fires are due to smoke inhalation and suffocation, usually caused by locked or insufficient exits. The fire in most school disasters starts in and is fed by the contents of the school (trash, stage props, desks, etc.), not the structure itself.

The National Fire Protection Association Committee on Safety to Life (Building trxits Code) states : "The one-story school, so arranged as to afford direct access to the outside

from any part of the building, is, in the opinion of the Committee, the safest design, and when this form of design is used, there is little restriction as to the type of construction."

2. Wood schools are not as "permanent" as non-wood schools. Most schools built fifty or more years ago are now obsolete, and of little use as schools to the community. Schools, like any other modern development, must be flexible, expanda-ble and inexpensive to - remodel. Wood holds the high cards on these points.

3. High insurance rates make wood schools impractical. Unfortunately, this misconception often is taken for granted, and wood isn't even given a chance to compete. If the comparison of insurance rates is made with construction costs, and carried through to the end, the picture can change considerably. It often happens that the savings made in the lower construction costs of the frame school more than make up for the somewhat higher insurance rates.

An actual examole is the Phantom I-ake School in Bellevue, Washington. The school is frame, and was built for $11,000 less than a comparative unprotected steel and masonry design. The insurance premiums were $270 higher in the wood school.

Figuring 3/o interest on the additional $11,W9, it would take morJ than fifty years to make up the difference. In

other cases, where a greater construction cost differential is involved, it often happens that the difference cannot be made up for 150 years or more!

A retailer's good business sense, combined with lumber manufacturers' literature and data plus the time-honored, undeniable advantages of wood, can mean profits from school building projects.

Plywood Industry Gears TV Promotion

qEP+ RATE tie.-in campaigns .fot tJ major plywood users are being prepared by the Douglas Fir Plywood Association as part of its national television promotion. DFPA will sponsor the weekly "David Brinkley's Joutual," a new NBC show that will make its premier October 11.

Commercials aimed at "creating broader public accePtance of fir plywood in every logical applicatiorr" will be the key elements in the tie-in campaisns, aicording to DFPA Advertisinf Director John D. Ritchie. Wellknbwn annourrcer George Fenneman, a regular on the Groucho show and othei top programs in past years. has been retained to deliver narration tor the commercials, Ritchie said.

Filming of commercials was well under way by midsummer and camera crews weie working on locations that included building tracts and hydroplane race courses. The biggest emphasis will be on the building market. ho*ever. Ritchie said.

Commercials will demonstrate plywood's durability and versatility in home building, s[ressing the quality of structures built from DFPA members' products. Others will dramatize the material's qualities with boiling tests, boats operating in rough seas and loacling demonstrations.-Disolavs and point-of-sale material tailored 'for use- by lumber dealers.

New lmoge For Soufhwest Foresl lndustries

Southwest Forest Industries. Phoenix. Arizona, has just announced adoption of its new col'porate identity program afiecting its seventeen divisions and subsidiaries in the Southwest and Far West. The program has been keyed to graphic elements created specifically to highlight its new role as a diversified pulp and paper producer in addition to its wood products operations.

The company, originally known as a lumber producer, felt the need for a stronger

corporate identity because of recent diversification and acquisitions in the paper and converting field. "The new look for Southwest Forest Industries," according to James Boyd, Vice President and Director of Public Relations, "had to go much deeper than just a revision of the present mark and signature in order to merge the several distinctive corporate looks of our new operating companies into a single entity." The long term equity which had been built up by each of them could not be sacrificed.

Southwest Forest lndustries, Jnc.

The project was assigned to Stephan Lion Inc. and a program was developed under the supervision of Russell Sandgren, Vice President and Director of Marketing Design.

Development of the new mark and signature by the Stephan Lion design staff resulted in a powerful new symbol, sornetimes referred to as the "Swinging S." This symbol was designed for maximum impact and clynamic effect and achieves an optical illusion of movement on the printed page. It was agreed that an abstract mark would best identify the company as modern and dynamic without inhibiting identification in terms of future growth and diversification.

The Stephan Lion graphic division was asked to develop broad applications in many areas. This included re-designing the Southwest Forest Industries' house organ, the Timberline, designing the Annuai Report, and designing numerous letterheads, business cards, business f orms, ad formats, signs, trucks and the like.

In thc opinion of both Southwest Forest Industries and the Stephan Lion organization, consistent use of the new look wrll relate all divisions and their brands across the country to form a powerful and memorable image of Southwest Forest Industries. This is the goal.

Good Mcrrket Seen For All Products From Tree Forms

A perennially good market for forest products-lumber, paper, plywood, hardboard, particle board, furniture and other items-looks even rosier for the rest of 1961, according to "Industrial Outlook lor 1961," published by the Department of Comrierce.

The Department's forecast of increased demand for all major wood products is good news to the nation's 20,000 certified tree farmers, whose managed timberlands embrace nearly 6O million acres in 47 states. The Tree Farm program this year is observing its 20th anniversary.

Eugene (Genel Courchoine

The government publication predicts that production of softwood plywood will set its 15th consecutive production record this year. Particle board, fastgrowing "freshman" of the forest industries, will equal or exceed its 1960 production.

Production of paper and paperboard, the publication states, will be probably 1.5 per cent ahead of 1960. Lumber production will rise slightly above 1960 to meet increasing demands. Hardboard, which jumped in per capita consumption f.rom 6.23 square feet in 1950 to 12.98 square feet in 1960-is also expected to increase output slightly above the 1960 figure. Household furniture production should rise in the

last nine months of the year to surpass 1960 turnout.

"The voluntary, industry-sponsored American Tred Farm System bf grow- ing trees as a crop on private lands is a strong force in meeting the nation's lncr_gasing wood needs," said James_C. McClellan, chief forester and assistant managing director of American Forest Products fndustries, Tree Farm sponsor.

"On top of that, Tree Farms provide the multiple benefits of wood, water, wildlife, recreation, soil stabilization and, in many instances, forage for livestock."

Remodeling ot Derr Lumber Incresses Soles

Homer Derr and Gerald Derr. owners of the J. IVI. Derr Lumber Company, Elk Grove, California, opened their completely remodeled stoie on July 15. This date, incidentally, marked

!h" sixty-third anniversary of the founding of the venerable Sacramento County firm.

The new J. M. Derr Lumber Company showroom is over twice the size of the old store and completely glassed in on the street frontage. Th6 Jounter area has been moved to the center of the store, open to the trade on three sides and affording ample space for wartrng on customers and writing tags.

Gerald Derr designed and bu-ilt ;ll of the islands for tlie store. Plenty of peg board wall area provides excellent merchandising possibilities.

"We have noticed for some time.,' lTomer Derr states "that items attractively displayed in easy-to-see situa-

tions have'turned' oftener than other key items with less attractive locations in the store. Our main reason for remodeling is to increase store trade and increase the dollar per tag ratio of our sales-through better merchandising of items previously carried, addition of new related lines such as built-in ranges, additional display area for yard items not previously shown in the store, and providing an attractive shopping area for the do-it-yourself trade."

The J. M. Derr Lumber Company is a long standing member of the Lumber Merchants Association of Northern California. Gerald Derr was recently elected a director of LMA during the association's 21st annual at Yosemite.

Trees Cool Twice

If you are planning on air conditioning vour home, the way it is built will deieimine the size of the unit you will need, and its operating costs.

Fortunately, most American homes are alreadv suitable for air conditioning or cati be adapted easily, and inex-pensivelv. For this we can thank our tradition 'of building homes with frames of wood. The air space formed bv the wood skeleton in four of five American homes is an excellent insulator in itself. In climates where insulation is necessary this space leaves room for insulating material to be put in place unobtrusively, without cutting

down on usable floor space. In principle, the air space in a wood frame wall performs the same function as the space between the panes in a doubleglazed window, or between a storm window and the year-round window.

It is a fact that the more we can protect our homes from outside temperatures, the easier it is to keep them warm in winter and cool in summer -and, of course, the less work there is for heating plants and air conditioners to do.

According to the National Lumber Manufacturers Association, the ideal home for air-conditioning efficiencyand this goes for heating efficiencY,

too-is a wood frame structure, with wood window frames, wood siding painted white and a light-colored roof. The wood siding and windows won't conduct heat into or out of the house as fast as other materials. The American Society of Heating and Ventilating Engineers has found, for example, that heat passes through aluminum 1800 times faster than through wood. A cine-inch thickness of wood will keep out as much summer heat as d' of brick or 15" of sandstone and concrete. It could be said that trees cool twice. We get shade from them when they're standing, and lumber that insulates when they are harvested.

Deqlers Using Do-lt-Yowself Soles Aids For Profit

Free do-it-yourself plans for home handymen are proving to be real merchandising aids for retail building material suppliers. Several thousand stocking dealers across the nation now are making available to their customers (and potential customers) eight different plans for home projects built with plywood. They range from a simple telephone bench to a versatile children's storage wall with drawers, adjustable shelves and special storage nooks.

The new sales aids are being furnished free through dealers by Georgia-Pacific Corp. as part of the company's ,,paradl of plywooi Values" merchandising program to assilt rit"ile.s nationwide.

"Demand for the plans, which show prospective customers how easy it is to make valuable home improvements at low cost with 9PX overlaid plyrvood, indicates unexpectedly high customer interest," according to C. D. Fratt, operations minagei of Georgia- Pacific's warehouse division.

Additional supplies of the plan kits have had to be routed to leading retailers in almost every part of the nation through local G-P distribution centers, Fratt said.

In addition to the telephone bench and children's storage wall, the set of working drawings (with building instructions and materials information) includes ideas for a utility closet with an unusual "built-in" cart, a built-in bar that swings out from the wall for party use, and an outdoor storage shelter.

There also are plans for an altractive room divider with built-in desks .and two-way storage areas, a modern carport that can be altered to fit almost any construction situation, and a combination children's playhouse and vrinter storage building with modern lines.
