Short Training Courre for Retail

Lumber Personnel

Orrie W. Hamilton, Los Angeles, secretary-manager of the Southern California Retail Lumber Association, announces that tentative arrang'ements have been made with the University of Southern California to conduct another Short Training Course for Retail Lumber Personnel commencing with the Fall College Term, on September 13, 1948, providing the dealers demonstrate their interest by encouiaging a sufficiently large enrollment to warrant the undertaking

Plans call for conducting either day classes or evening classes, depending entirely on the preference of members and prospective students.

The course will require approximately 160 class hours' If the course is given during the daytime it can be completed in 6 weeks providing we maintain a 5l hour class schedule, five (5) days per week. If the course is given during the early evening, however, it will require approximately 22 weeks to complete if the class hours are maintained. at 2l hours three nights per week'

The course has been approved by the Veterans' Administration for training of veterans under Public Larv No' 346. This means that the Veterans' Administration will pay sustenance for a "daytime course" in the amount of $120.00 per month for veterans having more than one depend6nt, or $105.0O per month for veterans with one dependent, or $75.00 per month for veterans having no dependents. If this course is conducted during the evening, three nights per lveek, hor'vever, and the veterans complete a minimum of 7 class hirurs per week, they would be entitled to only one-fourth of the monthly sustenance allowance shown above.

Besides the monthly sustenance, a tuition fee not exceeding $50.@, and books, supplies and equipment not exceeding $25.00 is available through the Veterans' Administration for veterans taking this course who qualify.

N'ew competitors of THE CALIFORNIA LUMBER MERCHANT keep bobbing up in the lumber industry. The latest friendly organ of that sort is "The lloffco News," a two-page house organ of The Earl Hoffman Company, of Los Angeles. The News is made up of interesting bits of reading such ps building and construction facts and figures, personal items concerning lumber folks, a list of lumber offered for sale with prices attached, and a few good gags.

No notice is given as to the frequency of the new house organ, but the Merchant bids it welcome' The Earl Hoffman Company is that business partnership of veteran Earl Hoffman, and Jim Magee, who operate a place of business at 6O15 South Citrus Avenue, Los Angeles. Two good guys, and a good little news sheet.
