Association grading conforms to requirements of Commercial Standard CS31-38 of the U. S. Bureau of Standards, and regular inspection of shingle grading is being carried out under the supervision of Thomas F. Karry of Rio Dell, California, who has been identified with the shingle industry for 45 years. Headquarters of the group are at Fortuna, and a San Francisco office is maintained at 55 New Montgomery Street, San Francisco.

In addition to Mr. Tehan, the board of trustees is made up of the following: A. C. Gibson, Boonville; Wiley Edmundson, Klamath Shingle Company, Klamath; F. B. Swartzel, Swartzel & Swan, Miranda; J. A. Christensen, Beatrice; and Fred Powers, Powers Shingle Company, Garberville.

This is the first trade association formed solely by redwood siingle mill operators. In 1935 the California Redwood association established a Redwood Shingle Bureau for some of its members producing shingles, but its active promotion of the shingle industry was discontinued a few years later.

The Redwood Shingle Association is now making plans for an advertising program and greater dealer cooperation. A monthly news letter is one of the projects being given consideration.

Increarer Engineering Staff

Washington-J. C. Garrison, structu:al engineer, has joined the'engineering department of the Timber Engineering Company, it was announced by Harry G. Uhl, president of the company.

Graduating this year in civil engineering from Virginia Military Institute, Mr. Garrison previously served in the engineering staffs of the J. D. Hedin Construction Company and the District of Columbia Highway Department.

Entering the U. S. Navy i.n 1944, Garrison served two years on the USS Alabama and USS Massachusetts.

Mr. Garrison's work will include timber designing, timber testing, and sales promotion work with architects, engineers, contractors and retail dealers.
