California L'umber Merchant

Dear Mr. Cutler

We very much appreciate our subscription to CALIFOR,NIA LUMBETR ME:RCHANT. The current issue is kept on the magazine display rack in the foyer of the Los Angeles Building Exhibitio,n Center and we find that it is used quite often by architects, decorators and landscape architects for reference and to show their clients interesting illustrations and articles. Many manufacturers refer to it when they are considering advertising.

In San Francisco we have a Building Ekhibition Center too. It is located on the gro'und floor of a building: in the center of Jackson Square which has been modernized to include studios and showrooms of all types of decorative materials and ofrces for the three profession"al groups. We have a magazine display rack there, too, which should include CALIFORNIA LUMBER MERCIHANT.

W'ould it be possible to add our San Francisco exhibit to your list of subscriptions? The address is The Btrilding Center, 40 Gold Street, San Francisco, C'alifornia 94111.

Very sincerely,

M. L. Schmidt Architect and Ehgineers Service Los Angeles,

California.

Ole May Dear Ole:

I would like to take this opportunity to thank you for the page and a half coverage you devoted to our seeond National Hoo-Hoo-Ette Convention.

There are a few corrections that I found while reading the article, and taking into consideration the several difterent events taking place during this week-end, and also realizing the deadline date, I knew you would want the correct information.

The main correction is the place of the 1965 convention. It will be held in Redding, CaIifornia, May 15 & 16, and not in Sacramento.

The second correction would be in regard to the business sessions held on Saturday, conducted by National President Myrtle lfeney, San Francisco Club S3, Lamon Lumber Company, rather than by convention chairwoman, Mary Williams, Blanchard Lumber Company.

OIe, so that our Eugene, Oregon, club won't feel neglected I wanted to let you know that the nine clubs range from Eugene, Oregon, to San Diego, California.

Again, Ole, I would like to say thank you from Hoo-HooEtte Club f6, and also from the National Order of Hoo-HooEtte, for the excellent coverag'e and pictures for our second convention.

Very truly yours, Hoo-Hoo-Ette Club f6, Lois Jones, Burbank Lumber Company.

Ole May

Dear Sirs:

Just a short letter to thank you for renewing my subscription for the Merchant. I'm back in the business again and I'll need it to keep abreast of what is going on in the building industry.

Also I would like to congratu- late you on the great job you did on wood promotion in your March 1964 issue. I was much impressed like many others who have read this article.

If possible could you send me an extra copy of your Mareh issue for a gentleman who is interested in subscribing for your magazine.

Again, thanks for the renewal and keep up the good work.

Sincerely,

D. E. Friese

Your story on how well wood performed in the Alaska earthquake (May issue, page 10) reminded me again of the seismologists recurring predictio'ns that California is due for another big shake.

Dr. Richter, the man who invented the scale the whole world uses to measure the intensity of quakes, said this week that he figured southern California w.as overdue for a big one. Perhaps even more sharp than the San Francisco'06 earthquake.

Let's hope that our local codes are as good as those in Alaska. If they arert't, then it seems to me that their omission would be criminal negligence!

Sincerely,

Paul Iloward Santa Rosa, Calif.

Hemlock Studs from Warrenton Lumber Co,, Warrenton, Oregon

Hemlock Dimension from Westport Lumber Co,, Westport, Oregon

Douglas Fir Studs from Shepherd & Dasher Lumber Co., Longview, Wash.

Fast, regular ocean shipments by barge from Southern Oregon and the Columbia River direct to Southern California.

Now, over 5,000,000 feet of dimension lumber and studs monthly manufactured especially for Southern California construction needs.

(Contiweil lrom Page 8) vast tracts of privately owned timber in the West Coast area will gradually undergo a nominal reduction in value and then, in another few years probably regain full value.

Confronted with the short-term prospect, however" W'est Coast timber owners are racing to adjust construction lumber sizes in order to frustrate the results that the stress grading machine would otherwise bring. To achieve their aims, they propose a reduction in the size of construction lumber. The reduction is such that the electron. ically stress-rated West Coast species will continue to be strong enough for con- struction purposes. But many of the Intermountain species, when reduced to the dimensions proposed by ALSC, will not be strong enough for general construction use. Hence the race to speed the promulagation of thinner sizes of construction lumber before there is general understanding of the benefits that the new electronic stress grading machine will bring.

Paralleling the development of the electronic stress grading machine is a great study to find the relationship of wood strength characteristics to wood density. Over the past few years, with the financial cooperation of the lumber and plywood industry, the United States Forest Prod- ucts Laboratory at Madison, Wisconsin, has collected thousands of samples of wood from standing timber. From the scientific studies of these samples the Laboratory is showing that wood strength is directly re' lated to wood density. More, the studies are showing that wood density varies not only with the individual species. More to the point it is also showing that within a single species, wood density and therefore wood strength is grown. For example, a Dorrglas fir grown at a lower elevation is likely to have more strength than a Douglas fir tree grown at a higher elevation. The wood density study was scheduled for completion on January L, 1964, but this completion date was postponed to March l,
