Jim Williams, general manager of CHIP National, was lead-ofi man at the Tuesday morning session. Williams warned of increasing competition from cash and carry operators in the remodeling field as they more and more tend to add servioe along with discount prices. Recent entries into the building materials cash and carry field include White Front Stores and Safewav Stores, Williams disclosed.
Villiams urged dealers to consider getting into contracting at the remode[ng level. noting that builders are becomins inr-reasingly active jn the retail buildins materials business. "A lumbcryard shouldn't just be a contractor's warehouse," Villiams emphasized, "it should be a full service organization."
Austin Zellmer, president of WBMA and credit salesmanager of Central Supply Co., Watsonville, was the final speaker on the program. Credit Salesmanager? That's the credit man who's trained to hold the cus. tomers you've worked so hard to Fet, Zellmer explained.
Zellmer, a strong advocate of regional credit meetings among dealers (like his own Coast Counties group), drew considerable interest from the assem'blage when he discussed the use of bonded stop notices instead of resorting to liens (a lien is filed against land and improvements whereas a bonded stop notice is a claim against the actual construction fund). In his o$,n ex' perience, Zellmer pointed out, recovery has been from ?5 to 100 cents on the dollar when using bonded stop notices, against an average recovery o{ 35 cents on the dollar where a lien was imposed.
