SEtt NAITS FOR MORE SATES
(Continued lrom Page 24) itns easy to see how there can really be 4(D difierent kinds and sizes of nails. bach has- been designed to perform a specific nailing requirement, and anyone who uses a "common" nail for a purpose for which there is a special nail may be making a serious mistake. Here are some nailing iips your customers will appreciate:
When fastening shingles or shakes to the side of a house, don't use smooth nails that will pop out in a few years. The proper nail is a ring-shank or.h"k"nail which has a series of tiny rings or corrugations around it. These nails have extra holding power and resistance to vibration. When galvanized, they produce both a powerful and a long-iasting grip.
Variations of the rins-shank nail are used for gypsum board] dry walls, siding and nailing subfloor to sleepers. (By the way, ring-shank styles are also avaiiable for jobs that require an extra tight - tlrp). "
The bven more ingenious screw.shank or drive-screw nail also has great hold. ing qualities and is used foi fastenins flooring roof rafters and even cabinets. Once hammered firmly into place, these nails stay put. Tests have shown them to have eight times more holding power than "common" nails. In such a iest a four-inch long drive screw nail required 120,000 pounds of force to removi.

Still another nail that's far better than the o'common" nail is a square nail with serrations running across its four faces. This nail won't turn in wood, holds better, minimizes splitting and gives up to more than 50 percent more shlar strength. (You also get about one fifth more nails per pound with square nails because they use about 20 percent less steel, and consequently weigh less than round nails).
Use leak-proof galvanized roofing nails with umbrella-shaped heads to nail galvanized roofing or siding into place.
When you engage in exteniive concrete work and want to save money on the nails used for forms, buy two-headed 'oscafiold" nails which are made to be removed easily for repeated use.
While the home-owner is unlikely to use manl of the other special nails now avail. able, nor will dealers want to stock them all, it may 'be of intereet to show some of them on your display board. They include nails for berry boxes, brooms, tile, barrels, slating, beer case straps, hinges, fiber board, gutters, acoustical tile, apple boxes and many other specific uses.
With an extensive nail board display like this,.many's the customer who'll learn, as he cannot from hidden nail bins, that there's a nail made just for his job. And many's the sales conversation that will lead into that job and the other sales oppor tunities it holds.
