(F IRST I V-ANT to thank Joe Mc(lracken for giving me a safe conduct pass to get out of San Francisco alir-e after I finish my talk to you here this morning.

I came hcrc under a llas of truct:" I carne to talk pea,'e. I came lo smoke lhe peace pipe rvith 1'ou. And I came to assure you that I am still vour friend even thoush you and I rlon't always quite seem to agree on technical questions.

Some of you ma\- think I came here to argue with you about dry lumber sizes. but let me assure you right awa1. quick that nothing could possibly be further {rom mr. purpose.

Believe it or not. I came here for just one purposeto see if I can't tell you u few things you don't seem to realize, ir.r the hope that lry helping you open your eyes to these things I can help all of you rnake a lot more money than you could otlerwise make or else a lot less money than you would otherwise lose,

Year after year other industries have been horning in on a bigger cut of the market that used to be all yours. and year a{ter year you are going to lose more of the market unless and until the, whole lumber industrygreen producers and dr1' producers alikeadjusts its standards and adjusts its grading so the homebuilding industry can take full engineering advantage of all the qualities and all the economies wood can offer.

Now first let mc assure you I know you've had a lot of problems and a lot o[ troubles, and let me assure you that yor-r have m1. deep sympathy aboul these troubles and problems.

All this is tough, and you have all my sympathy in your troubles. You also have my respect and admiration lor the way you have borne up under the adversities that have put so many other gret'n lumber producers out of lrusiness. I think it is nothing less than norrrler'[u] that so many of yc,u are still going strong. and I'm delighted to hear that ,some of you ure still able to bu.y. Cuditlncs.

Next, having assured you of my sympathy with 1'our trouliles, let me consratulate you on the terrific fight you have put up. The fight you put up has been magnificenteven though I'm tempted to add what the French seneral said when he watched the suicidal charge of the Light Brigade"[1's magnificent. but it's no way to win a war."

More particularly, I congratulate you on the great selling job you had to do to make so many politicians believe you green producers are such bad businessmen that you all go broke unless you can keep dry lumber handicapped by a standard that calls for prrtting 8l/o more lumber into a dr,r.
