January Hqmebuilding Activity Up 10 Per Cent firom December

Washington, D. C., February 18-Neu' housing activity advanced 10 per cent from December to January rvhen 68,000 ne\l, permanent nonfarrn drvelling units were started, according to preliminary estimates of the U. S. Labor Department's Bureau of Labor Statistics.

Private residential constrnction increased by 6 per cent (3,900 units) betrveen December and January to 64,8@ new units, rvhich may reflect builders' efforts to get work under l'ay beiore expected fuither restrictions o11 net{' homebuilding. Public Housing authorities started 3,200 new clrvelling units during Januarl', compared u'itl-r 1.100 in December.

l)espite the rise from December, housing volume last month n'as 20 per cent under that for January 1951, resulting almost entirely from a lorver level of private homebuilding.

On the basis of preliminary telegraphic reports from both urban and rural l>uilding-permit officials, there u'as a 25-per cent increase in the number of nerv units for n'hich building permits were issued last month, indicating continued strength in housing activity for Februarv when many of the units authorized ir.r January rvill get started. Regionally, tl-re sharpest December-January gains in permit issuance occurred in the Sonthern and West North Central States. Tlvothirds of the reporting cities shorved increases during January, rvith extensive gains occurring in Atlanta, Denver, Detroit, Long Beach, Los Angeles, San Antonio, Washington, D.C., and Wichita, Kansas. Nerv York and Cincinnati reported sharp declines in pe:mit issuance for nerv residential construction.

New Commercial Standard for Ponderosa Pine \(indows and Sash

A Proposed Commercial Standard for Standard Stock Ponderosa Pine Insulating Glass Windows and Sash has been circulated by the Commodity Standards Division, Offrce of Industry and Commerce, to manufacturers, distributors and other interested groups for their review and comment, the U. S. Department of Commerce reported today.

The purpose of this Commercial Standard is to establish specifications for standard sizes, layouts and construction of insulating glass stock lvindorvs and sash for the guidance of prodttcers, distributors, architects, builders and the public.

This standard covers the construction, modular sizes, and tolerances for l3f" check rail rvindou''s, and 2f" stationary sash.

A lirlited numbet oI mirneographed copies of the Proposed Standard are available, and a copy may be obtained as long as the supply lasts, from the Commodity Standards Division, Office of Industry and Commerce, IJ. S. Department of Commerce, Washington 25, D. C.
