\(/oodwork Institute Makes Exceptional
First Year Accomplishments
The report of the First Anniversary Meeting of the Woodwork Institute of Cali{ornia by Russell Bjorn, Manager-Director, showed exceptional first year accomplishments. These included (1) Drawing up a sound and rvorkable set of bylaws and articles of incorporation; (2) the raising of $30,000 by voluntary contributions by only 17 firms; (3) establishment of offices, personnel, so that by the middle of 1951 the Institute was a live, active, going concern; (4) designing and production of display ads and clirect mail matter to acquaint the industry and general public u'ith the new organi zation; (5) the rnaking by Manager Bjorn and Technical Director Lange of 160 personal calls during the year on architects, mill'rvork plants, contractors, builders, and tract operators, and many other contacts to gather ideas. This activity was successful, and u'hat was learned is being put into the program; (6) the gathering and compiling volumes of material for the much needed Millwork Manual and Directory of Standards; (7) rnaking big headway on building up the most complete library of every conceivable type of printed matter for the benefit of the n'oodrvorking industry.
Mr. Lange, technical director, rvill have finished calling on 139 architects in the San Francisco Bay area by March 1. These calls are for the purpose of getting professional guidance and assistance on specifications, and many other things that rvill go into the Milh,vork Annual, which is expected to be available by the middle of the year.
I\{r. Bjorn has been invited by The Pa'cific Lumber Company to address their monthly meeting of Supervisors, NIarch 1. His speech rvill deal with the individual's friendly relations n'ith his employees both off and on the iob.
Earl D. Bender Represents Fairhurst Lumber Co. in No.Calif.
Earle D. Bender, Oakland wl-rolesale lumberman, has been :rppointed Northern California sales representative for Fairhurst Lumber Co., Eureka. He announces that Gordon R. Saunders, former Army Lieutenant who served in Japan and in the South Pacific, is now calling on the trade in the San Joaquin Valley from Stockton to Bakersfield, and the San Francisco Bay district and Peninsula. He also travels to Santa Rosa in the North Coast Counties. Mr. Saunders rvas formerly in the sales department of Schlage Lock Company.
