Simpson's \(/oodfiber Plant Featured In Seatde Times Sunday Rotogravure
Horv the Simpson I-ogging Companl' makes building materials fron.r n'ood once rvasted, u,as the featured picture in the rotog'ravure section of a recent Seattle Sunday Times.
The article, under the title "Waste \\rood Irays Off,". illustrated graphically horv Simpson, using wood u'hich is useless for its lumber, door.and plyrvood op_ erations, now manufactures a variety of Insulating board and acoustical tile products. The raw mater.ial u,as formerly left in the forests or burned in the sawmill burners.

Five full pages of pictures took Seattle Times readers through Simpson's entire woodfiber operation, from the time l'aste logs and mill scrap are brought in to be chippecl, until the finished products are shipped out from Simpson's orvn railroad siding in Shelton, Washington.
Included in the series are illustrations sl.rotving the steam digestor in rvhich chips are softened under pressure before being fed into the pulping machines. The machine rvhich actually forms the pulp into boards and the 385-foot bat- tery of ovens in which it is dried are next shorvn. Also pictured were testing, finishing and packaging operations.
The u'oodfiber plant $,as established nearly three years ago to make full use of forest products in line u,ith Simp_ son's forest management and sustained yield
'r,vith the United States government. Woodfiber insulating board products manufactured by Simpson include, building board, decorative plank and tile, aspl.ralt impregnated sheathing, lath, acoustical tile and roof insulation.
Besides its u'oodfiber plant Simpson has sawmills and a plywood plant in Shelton, \\rashington, and a plywood and door plant at McClearv, Washington. Logging opera_ tions are located in the forest community of Grisdale, \vashington. Ilxecutive and sares offrces are at 1065 Stuart 13uilding in Seattle.
