Shaken Reopen After Quake

Though smaller quakes continue to rock the Yucca Valley, Ca., area, local home centers are back on their feet after being turned upside down by a 7.1 magnitude temblor.

Residents remain nervous as lower intensity jolts have struck every day since the initial June 28 shaker (see Thc Merchanl, July p.44). More than 11,000 aftershocks have been recorded.

Builders Emporium closed for two weeks, but kept full staffs working on clean up, paperwork and answering the telephone. Steel columns were added to the building as a safety precaution. Clean up was complicated by spills in the paint department which had to be treated as hazardous waste.

Yucca Valley Lumber & Hardware has yet to fully repair extensive damages to its warehouse, door shop and home center, where the ceiling fell in, gondolas split in two, machinery overtumed and crushed jambs made doors inoperable. But the company reopened the day after the big quake, serving customers at the door.

Bob's Economy Building Center reopened the day after the quake, despite few customers since the main road was closed for a week. They also conducted business at the door.
