Tips For Working With Cypress

Cypress siding should be installed at a moisture content closo to the climate of the area. To obtain this MC, store the lumber under cover, stickered and off the ground in a well ventilated area for a week to 10 days before installing. tf boards get wet, they must be allowed o dry before installation. Siding must be applied only o dry construction material.

Patterns are usually installed vertically, but some may be installed horizontally. Bevel and Williamsburg pattorns are traditionally placed horizontally. For interior use, most patterns can be used in either direction.

Priming or prefinishing of all sides, ends and edges after siding reaches climatic balance and before it is installed will minimize joints opening or buckling because of shrinkage.

Vapor retarders with a pemr rating of 1.0 or less are required on the warm side of exterior walls and on the ground in all crawl spaces or under concrete slabs. Water from the roof must not be allowed to run down side walls of a building with cypress siding and ground should be sloped away from the structure for a minimum of three feet.

Conosion-resistant nails such as double hot dipped galvanized or stainless ste€l arc the best to use. Bluntpoint wmd siding nails reduce splitting. Nails must go through the siding and sheathing and penetrate l-ll2" into the stud.

Finishing should be done prcmptly if the siding has not been primed or pre-finished, following the recommendations of the finish manufacturer. Alkyd primer and two acrylic op coats provide the most durable finish. Transparent and semi-transparent stains usually require frequent maintenance.

Dealers Sell Redwood on TV

Cantwell Brothers Lumber Co', Smithfield, Ut., and Dusty CreekLumber, El Dorado Hills, Ca., are increasing redwood sales with tv advertising based on the California Redwood

Association's 30 second sPot ad, "Dream Deck."

Cantwell usesthefirstpartof "Dream Deck" to introduce a customized ad on cable tv. "The second half of the spot we've produced locally," WaYne Cantwell explains. "We have a young woman, a professional spokesperson, who does a stand-up ona deck and tells the audience about special decking services and products. [t's very effective and blends into the CRA spot smoothly

"We don'taimata solely male audience," Cantwell adds. "We believe female customers are key inbuying decisions, especially for decorative items like decking or paneling. CNN or Lifetime can be just as effective as ESPN for redwood advertising"'

Local broadcast stations and network affiliates can also do customizing. Jack Dolan at DustY Creek said, "The visuals are pretty straightforward, so we just drop out some of the existing audio and drop in our particular message, usually aproduct specialor sale."

Dusty Creek recently experimented by stressing a special price promotion on Penofin deck finishes in an audio dub dropped into the ad. "The results were dramatic," Dolan said. "People who would never have thought of using a finish were asking for Penofin. The ad generated inquiries and sales. It was marketing at its most effective."

Radiata Pine Plywood

Radiata pine ftom New Zealand is proving successful as a replacement for hard to get western species in plywood manufacturing on the west coast.

At least a half dozen plywood plants have experimented with the wood which usually arrives in log fomr although a small amount of veneer has been imported. Logs being used average 9 to 16 inches in diameter, much the sarne as domestic logs. Problems have been encountered in the veneer drying process and glue bonding, but appear to have been overcome, according to a Random lzngths report.

Radiata pine is not approved under PS-l, the prescriptive product standard, but it is expected to be considered when PS-l is revised in the near future. Industry spokesmen say it will probably be classed as Group II and Group III species, depending upon where it is grown.

One producer has approval to use the performance strndards for ll2" 3ply and 5/8" 4-ply rated sheathing. Another manufacturer has had good results using radiata faces for sanded and siding panels.

One of the biggest problems comes from importing difficulties. Some shipments of radiata pine from New Taaland have been held in port for several months before they were cleared by U.S. Customs and the U.S.
