Prior Owl Research Spotty
The population of northern spotted owls on newly surveyed timbedands in Mendocino County, Ca., is significantly greater than previous estimates, according to a joint study by the California Department of Fish & Game, Georgia-Pacific and LouisianaPacific.
Biologists attribute the drarnatic increase in the number of documented owl sites to intensified research in the study area rather than an increase in owl population.
The study of 500,000 acres of forestlands from 1989 to 1991 documented 198 individual owls at 103 owl sites - nearly a ten-fold increase over prior estimates. Additionally, 97 nests were located within managed second growth forests, producing a total of 115 young during the three year study.
Spotted Owl Won't Benefit
The government can do nothing to prevent the threatened spotted owl from becoming extinct in the forests of the Pacific Northwest, Agriculture Secretary Edward Madigan said as President Bush toured California's Sequoia National Park in an attempt to prove his commitment to the environment. He also joked that the 1992 GOP platform would include a farm plank calling for "More money, higher income, more markets. String all the environmentalists up."
