Home Genter Show Draws Top Execs
Home center/home improvement center and lumber & building material dealers comprised 630/o of the retailer attendees at the l99l National Home Center Show, according to a recently released audience survey.
Nearly a third of all retailers attending were from firms with more than five stores. Firms with annual sales of more than $l million were represented by 660h ofthe attendees, with 38% coming from firms topping the $10 million sales mark.
Despite an attendance decrease of nearly 140/o due to economic factors and international events, the show continued its l6 year tradition of drawing the home improvement industry's top executives, buyers and important decision makers. Nearly a fourth of them reportedly attend no other show. Other show attendance reported included National Hardware Show (a8%); International Housewares Show (250lo); National Kitchen and Bath Show (l7olo)l National Association of Home Builders Show (7%); buying group shows 0o/il; regional association shows (80/o); wholesaler shows (80/o).
Of all the retailer and wholesaler attendees, 950/o identified themselves as owners, executives, managers, buyers or merchandisers. Nine out of l0 were involved in the purchasing decision for their firms and 60/o ordered or planned to order products as a direct result of seeing them at the show.
The show was ranked by 780/o of all attendees as valuable in identifying new products. In addition, 760lo rated the show valuable in finding new vendors. When asked to rank the three trade shows that best met their business needs, 620lo named the Home Center Show and 4lolo named the Hardware Show.
In ranking potential locations of future shows, 850/o listed Chicago as first or second choice, far outdistancing Atlanta and Las Vegas. Sunday, Monday and Tuesday were preferred by a wide margin as convenient days to attend. February and March were rated as the most convenient times of the year to attend.
The l99l audience survey was mailed to 1,494 retailers and wholesalers randomly selected from registration records. The survey response rate was 460/0, a rate comparable with that for similar research after the 1990 show.
