Will Consumers Pay More For Green?

Results of a recent study show that when given the choice between ecolabeled and non-ecolabeled plywood products, consumers opt for the ecolabeled one. As long as the price of the plywood was the same, the ecolabeled merchandise outsold the non-ecolabeled merchandise 2 to l.

At two Home Depot stores in Oregon, consumers were offered a choice between virtually identical ecolabeled and non-ecolabeled products in bins right next to each other. Sales totals were then compared for both types to determine if the ecolabel presence affected higher sales. The sales totals showed that 271pieces of ecolabeled products were sold compared to only 132 pieces ofnon-labeled products. Though the study suggested that consumers prefer to purchase the ecolabeled type, if the prices of the plywood products were not the same, the presence of the ecolabel did not increase sales.
