Moulding Producer Expands

Sunset Moulding Co., Live Oak, Ca., has recently completed expansion projects at all of its pine and MDF moulding manufacturing operations.

The Live Oak facility added a stateof-the-art architectural MDF line that increases production by 25Vo. The Cottonwood, Ca., plant added two Weinig moulders to improve production of wider patterns. The Chico, Ca., facility added a second paint line to accommodate the increased demand for primed products.

In addition, Sunset opened a new facility in Idabel, Ok., to produce Suntrim premium MDF primed moulding. Corporate headquarters in Live Oak will handle sales and purchasing for the new Oklahoma Division.

Ziggy's Moving Spokane Hq.

Ziegler Lumber Co., Spokane, Wa., will relocate its headquarters from its Ziggy's Building Materials store on Market Street to its East Holland Street location.

Ziggy's is moving to get out of the path of a planned freeway. The Market Street retail store will not evacuate until it absolutely has to.

To accommodate the headquarters, Ziggy's will remodel 9,000 sq. ft. of floor space in its 100,000-sq. ft. East Holland store to convert it into an office area. Acting as its own general contractor, the company will begin the three-month project in the fall "after the building season, so we don't disrupt the store for customers," said coowner Reid Ziegler.

Hardware Businesses Bought

Black & Decker Corp. has agreed to acquire the Baldwin Hardware and Weiser Lock businesses from Masco Corp.

Baldwin and Weiser, with combined 2002 net sales of approximately $250 million, manufacture and distribute architectural hardware and locksets.

The deal, expected to close later this year, is subject to regulatory and board approval.

Masco chairman and c.e.o. Richard A. Manoogian noted, "We believe that the combination of Baldwin and Weiser with Black & Decker will be advantageous for these businesses since architectural hardware and locksets are core businesses for Black & Decker."

Pacific Coast Buys Truss Firm

Pacific Coast Supply, Sacramento, Ca., has acquired the assets of Arden Lumber & Truss, Marysville, Ca.

Arden Lumber is now part of Pacific Coast's wood products division, which also includes Anderson Lumber, Anderson Truss, Diamond Pacific and Pac Door.

The deal adds prefabricated walls for residential and commercial construction to Pacific Coast's product mix, and provides it with a new supply point.

Arden Lumber was founded in Sacramento in 1952 and relocated to Marysville in 1996. Its former owners, Eric Foth and Stephen Branson, have joined Anderson Lumber & Truss.

Fire Strikes Wyoming Yard

A July 2 fire at Buckingham Lumber Co., Buffalo, Wy., destroyed a welding shop, but did not reach the main lumber and hardware store.

The fire started when a spark from a millworker's cutting torch ignited diesel fuel in a nearby parts cleaning basin.

The employee attempted to douse the fire with an extinguisher, but the blaze quickly spread from the hammer mill to the adjacent welding shop, destroying shop tools. air compressors, welding equipment and an old fiberglass boat.

Barrels of oil and oil products, as well as waste-wood products also caught fire.

"Let's just call it a $40,000 weenie roast," said owner John Buckingham. No one was injured.
