The Green Building Boom

When one thinks of "green building," most people tend to think of things such as energy efficient lighting, increased water efficiency, integrated recycling centers, and more "pleasant" work atmospheres for employees. What is often overlooked, and has become a very important issue, is the wood used in building and construction processes, and how this directly translates into forest conservation.

Thanks to the Leadership in EnergY & Environmental Design program of the US Green Building Council, there has been a definite surge in the specification of Forest Stewardship Council-certified wood for use in commercial construction projects. The program is a commercial building design guideline and third-party certification tool that aims to "improve occupant well-being, environmental performance and economic returns of buildings using established and innovative practices, standards and technologies."

Under the system, Credit 7 in the Materials & Resources category addresses the issue of certified wood, with the intent of encouraging environmentally responsible forest management. The requirements for the credit are to use a minimum of 50Vo wood-based materials and products that are FSC-certified.

A central component of the LEED program is the tracking and documentation of materials used in the building project. In the case ofthe certified wood credit, this involved documentation of wood purchase invoices and FSC Chain- of-Custody certificates from suppliers' To help organize and ease the process, the Certified Wood & Paper Association has developed a project toolkit that explains the wood related credits (including other credits dealing with recycled and reclaimed wood), as well as providing sample documentation forms and invoices.

This trend is not just in commercial construction-residential construction is also beginning to go "green" as well, and opening up new markets for FSC suppliers. For example, in 2000, builder KB Home agreed to work with the nonprofit Natural Resources Defense Council to eliminate their use of wood that comes from what NRDC considers to be endangered forests.

Growing Tomorrow's Forests TodaY

Since it was unvbiled in 1995, the Sustainable Forestry Initiative program has grown to trecorne oneof the world's largest sustainable forestry and certification programl. It promotes the perpetual growing arid harvesting of trees as well as the long-term protection of wildlife, plants, soil and water quality.

More than 136 million acres of forest-lands in North America are enrolled in the program, 96 million of which have been independently third-party certified to conform to the SFI Standard. The program has over 200 participants.

While sustaining a healthy supply of trees makes good business sense for everyone in the supply chain, SFI has ensured a long-term commitment to sus- tainable forestry by establishing an independent governing body of environmentalists, academics. and industry leaders called the Sustainable Forestry Board.

As an independent; non-Profit grouP, the board manages the Standard, as well as the pfogram's third-party certification process, dispute resolution, and quality control, while continuously working to refine and improve those efforts. Recent refinements to the Standard have led to more stringertt policies and standards for wildlife protection, improved water and air quality, slimination of illegal logging, protection of imperiled forests, and the promotion of best management practices on lands not under SFI panicipant control.

More specifically, companies seeking SFI certification must now develop and implement plans to protect ecological communities, biodiversity hotspots, and major nopical wilderness areas in forests worldwide, based in part on information obtained from organizations such as the Nature Conservancy's Natureserve.

As the board continues to evaluate and refine the SFI Standard. with input from forestry experts, conservation groups, landowners, governments, participating members, customers, and the general public, the ultimate payoff will be productive, responsibly managed forests that assure a reliable and affordable supply of paper, pulp. lumber, and wood products for generations to come.

One company's take on certification

At Boise, forest certification means more than having t007o of its 2.4 million acres certified against the SFI Standard. The company has documentation to prove that independent auditors find their forest practices meet or exceed strict SFI objectives.

However, Boise also receives thirdparty recognition through awards, input from others on ways to constantly improve their forest management, and collaborative efforts with others to enhance wildlife habitat.

ln the past few months, several Boise employees (forest engineer Eric Bieker, chief forester Ken Cummings and wildlife biologists Brian Kernohan and Tim Burnet| received third-party recognition for helping Boise in their sustainable management of forest resources.

In 1999. Boise created the Forest

Stewardship Advisory Council, an independent panel of nationally known forestry experts who "think outside the box" to continually advise Boise on ways to improve forest management' The council participates in forest audits, reviews results and recommends changes. Jack Ward Thomas, former chief of the U.S. Forest Service, said, "My service on the council, observing audits, and working with managers to seek 'a better way' has convinced me that Boise is dedicated to the production of wood products in a sustainable and environmentally sensitive manner."

Working in collaboration with conservation organizations and state agencies is common at Boise. For instance, prescribed burns are conducted on Boise's Louisiana timberlands in conjunction with the National Wild Turkey

Federation to improve the Turkey habitat. In ldaho, Boise's stafT provided The Nature Conservancy with a database and computer mapping system so they can effectively analyze 2,000 acres for the protection of open space and wildlife habitat. In Minnesota, Boise formed a partnership with Bat Conservation International to evaluate the use of different bat roosting structures. The information will guide the selection of an effective roost box design for use in areas deficient of this habitat feature.

"SFI certification is a great way to make our customers, employees and the public aware that we're excellent forestland managers," said stewardship coordinator Brad Holt. "But that onlY scratches the surface of what Boise does to continually improve its forest stewardship program.
