Work attitude - not aptitude - is the top deficiency of job applicants, according to a study by HRStrategies. More than 5O7o of the 900+ respondents were concerned more about candidates' attitude toward work than their skills. Decreasing satisfaction with new hires was attributed to concerns about employee motivation and attention to customer needs.

Other findings:

. Only 36Vo said their workers' skill levels were keeping pace with the demands of their positions.

More companies are implementing innovative compensation programs, including team awards, skillbased pay and gain-sharing programs.

. Drug and alcohol abuse testing is the most common method used to screen applicants.
