Capital management and requirements can be improved upon bY those using futures for hedging. Hedging can reduce the need for storage facilities, thereby reducing fixed capital investments, maintenance costs, working capital for inventory and interest charges if less working capital is required. More favorable financing can often be arranged for hedged inventories as they hold reduced price risks.
A futures contract is a valid contract between a buyer and seller for delivery of a specified amount of a specific commodity on or about a specified future date under the rules of an exchange. Futures contracts differ from cash market contracts in two principal areas:
(l) They are standardized by the exchange and
(2) They can be easily negated by an opposite transaction in the market (or offset).
Hedging may also be defined as assuming a position in the futures market opposite that assumed in the cash market, thus transferring a price
Washington Dealer Featured
Nationwide response has been generated for Lumbermen's of Washington, Inc. from an article in the June 1975 issue of Mechanix lllustrated titled "Homes for Under $5,000!". A featured home in that article is the "Skokomish," a model designed and built by the Homes division of Lumbermen's.

Stan Lyman, manager of Lumbermen's Homes at Shelton, Wa., saYs the magazine project was a cooperative venture with the American Plywood Association of Tacoma. Mechanix lllustrated was doing a story on doit-yourself homes, the shell of which could be constructed for under $5,000, and Lumbermen's happened to have a model they were looking for.
According to Lyman, "resPonse from readers in nearly every state has been tremendous" and although Lum' bermen's does not build or ship homes outside of the Pacific Northwest, "we are sending additional information to all who have inquired."
The "skokomish" is a modified "A"-frame with 960 sq. ft. of space including loft, plus a deck. It's designed as a vacation or retirement home, or as a small permanent home.
risk. Since the futures contract is closely related to a cash market trans action, cash prices and futures prices will tend to converge upon expiration of the contract, thus making hedging possible. Note that it is always neces' sary to calculate into a hedge transaction the premium or discount the futures prices may contain.
Next month's article will deal with hedging itself.
