Promises, Promises

The message in the advertisement from the company was clear: Under New Management. The promise implied was that the old sins and omissions were gone. The flyer also made explicit promises: Better Service, Better Pricing, Better Quality. In other words, what you didn't like about us is gone and all the things you want are now ready for you today.

So far, so good. But when I returned to lny tarnished favorite of old, I found none of the prornises had been kept. The service scemed worse, the priccs were the sarne or higher, and the quality wasn't any better than when they drove rne away in thc flrst place. Tlre tarnish was still firrnly in place.

old customers and attracting new ones. The rush to act is an understandable failing. Yet we see these mistakes replicated often as new owners and managers of troubled firms try to right old wrongs. It's as true of the rnom and pop lurnberyard as it is of the giant international building products manuf'acturer.

Companies internally comrnit similar sins. Management tells the ernployees that the conditions that caused the grief have been eliminated. Then, either nothing ever happens or only halfhearted. even insincere. efforts are made to alleviate sources of friction.

When trust, that rnost fragile of ernotions is lost, consequences quickly resonate. Sotnetimes. like Hunrpty Durnpty, it's impossible to put back together again.

ETINGERJOINTED framing lumber is gaining wide .l-' acceptance in building construction. Accepted for use under all model building codes, it is interchangeable with solid-sawn dimension lumber of the same size, grade and species.

According to manufacturer Stimson Lumber, Portland, Or.. the material makes efficient use of available wood

resources and can be manufactured in long lengths. Because it is fabricated from dry material, it is dimensionally stable so it stays straight.

Stonecreek Building, Phoenix, Az., recently framed a 6,835 sq. ft. residence in Scottsdale with Stimson fingerjointed material. The five-year-old firm builds three to four homes per year in the $600,000 to $2.5 million range. Owner Joe Costello says that the framing crews were pleased with the straighter framing material which eliminated the need for sorting out bowed and twisted studs, a definite problem in Arizona's hot sun.

Tim Hiscocks, foreman for framing sub-contractor Bold Framing, explains: "The fingerjointed studs were much straighter than the kiln dried studs we normally use. We typically have to cut up 3OVo to 4OVo of the regular studs into blocking because of bowing or twisting. There was no waste with the Stimson fingerjointed lumber. Since we did

Stonecreek used 2x6 fingerjointed studs for exterior walls and 2x4 fingerjointed studs for interior walls. Double 2x6 walls were used to create a dramatic design effect around windows on the project. 2x8 and 2xl0 fingerjointed material was also used for window and door headers.

Stimson mills in Forest Grove, Or., and Libby, Mt., produce fingerjointed framing 2x4 through 2x10. Vertical members are typically Standard & Better or Stud grade. Framing material is usually #2 & Better although other grades are available. Species classifications include FirLarch, Hem-Fir and Spruce-PineFir.

Because fingerjointed material is graded using the same rules applied to solid sawn dimension lumber, the design values for fingerjointed lumber are identical to those of conventional lumber.

There are two grades of fingerjointed lumber, with material identified as CERT EXT JNTS on the gradestamp suitable for all structural applications. This product is assembled with waterproof, exterior phenol-resorcinol adhesives cured with radio frequency heat. The adhesive meets the requirements of ASTM Product Standard D2559 and conforms to WWPA's Glued Products Procedures &

Quality Control, CIQC l0I .97.

Samples are regularly selected from production for continuous quality control monitoring. The glued joints are subjected to cyclic delamination tests designed to simulate long-term end-use conditions for changes in moisture content. The samples are then subjected to bending and tension forces equal to or exceeding the published design values for solid sawn lumber.

Stimson fingerjointed lumber is graded under the National Grading Rule for Dimension Lumber (NGR) with additional stricter limitations on characteristics in the joint area. Section 1.70 of the AlSC-approv ed WW P A W e st e r n Lumber Grade Rules defines these limitations.

Fingerjointed framing is an engineered product requiring lllTth the energy needed to produce steel framing. Fingerjointed material not only improves on nature's work, it also makes better utilization of the wood fiber available, making it an environmentally friendly product.

More distributors are producing their own I'ioists

SEVERAL engineered wood prod\)ucts distributors have discovered an added edge in selling I-joists: making them themselves.

Instead of l-joists, Alberta, Canadabased Nascor Inc. provides remanufacturers and wholesalers with everything they need to produce and market the products themselves, reportedly providing lower costs and greater control of inventories, quality, pricing and distribution.

Back in the 1980s, in addition to manufacturing wall panels, Nascor used to distribute other manufacturers' I-joists to its builder clientele. "At the time there were only a limited number of people to buy from," recalls James Lind, licensing manager. "It was no problem getting I-joists in the winter, but they would be allocated in the summer. It was a real pain."

So, in 1989, the company expanded its manufacturing capabilities to Ijoists. The products caught on so quickly that three years later, Ontario's then-largest distributor of engineered wood products to lumber yards inquired about buying I-joists from Nascor. "Eastern Canada was

too far away to ship them, so, instead, we said we'd show them how to produce them themselves," Lind says. "In a little under a month and a half, they went from no capacity to a halfmillion feet."

The distributor was able to produce I-joists for about 307o less than it cost to buy from its previous supplier. It passed part of the savings on to its customers, who received products reportedly of identical quality, appearance and spans.

Steadily, Nascor has added licensees. The company supplies the equipment, testing operations for quality control, and patented software, looks after government certification of the products, and produces custom advertising, brochures and manuals, with each licensee's name on them.

Nascor I-joists are now produced by nearly 20 wholesalers, sawmills and roof truss manufacturers, in widths up to 18" and lengths to 40'.

Licensees aren't really franchises because they can set their own prices, and can buy their raw materials from whomever they wish, unlike, say, a McDonald's franchise, which must buy its burgers and other supplies from certain suppliers.

The average I-joist operation requires five workers to operate, producing about a truckload of product in an 8-hour shift. Typically, licensees devote 7,000 to 10,000 sq. ft. of space to the operation, allowing ample room for production, quality testing, flow through and storage of the day's pro-

duction, which takes about eight hours to air dry. Companies with more severe winters usually need more inside storage space.

Cost savings and control are the greatest advantages of bringing production in-house. It lowers shipping costs and eliminates shipping time, says Lind. "You can produce what you need when you need it. You control inventory a lot better; instead of finished product, your inventory can be in raw materials, such as 2x3s and OSB, which can be used for other things. Plus, people like buying directly from a manufacturer."

To justify the investment, producers should be located in an area with healthy building activity. Those already selling I-joists are at a distinct advantage.

And, related operations are a must. Nascor won't license its technology as a stand-alone business. Ideal candidates include the existing roof truss manufacturer or the low-margin wholesaler of 2x10s and 2x12s. "It works well as an add-on operation, with sales, accounting and such in place, so costs can be spread over the entire company," Lind says.

To protect its licensees, Nascor controls not where they sell, but where they manufacture. Since Nascor's revenuo comes from royalties (5p per lineal foot produced), its success is dependent upon its licensees' productivity. Accordingly, it wants to make sure it blocks off a manufacturing territory for the right company.

Discipline identifies the rules and regulations of a company, helping direct people trying to reach a definite goal. In business, management exercises discipline through communicati9n, such as in:

Although several competitors, such as Clark Manufacturing, Lexington, Ky., already offer 36,000-lb. capacity trucks. Yale's new line offers improved features previously not available on like-sized trucks. according to John Piccolo, Big Trucks product manager.

He says the line grants the company entry into heavier-use "markets we were traditionally locked out of."

moving up to heavier duty trucks is stability.

Hyster produces lift trucks up to I 05,000 lb. capacity, sizes impractical for the typical lumber yard. "We have seen a few that use a 25.0001b. truck, but most of the lumberyards are using an 8,000-lb. to a 15,000-lb. truck," says Teny Moore, vice president/general manager of Hyster dealer Wrenn Handling's Mid-South division, Memphis, Tn. "Normally, they use larger trucks where the length of the lumber is really long, and they're picking up a half a trailer load at a time, like container loading and unloading on a dock."

"You also see (higher capacity trucks) where they're handling more pre-treated Iumber, which is much heavier than regular lumber," he adds.

One major restriction for building material dealers in moving up to heavier duty trucks is stability. Heavier, wider loads require a wider carriage fbr proper balance, meaning aisles must be wider.

"Most of the yards must maneuver through a confined warehouse," Moore says. "Most of the lumber yards and home centers are stacking in a warehouse where a customer's walking by, saying, 'I want four of these and five of these.' You have to be very, very careful driving alongsidc consumers. You can do that with a 10.000-lb. truck. but not a 25.000lb. truck."

Retailer's sawmill rises from the ashes

Mill, Snohomish, Wa., in late 1996 was the first test of the

family's resolve. The rough winter that followed wasn't exactly a respite either. Far from it. Two feet of snow fell in December alone. The following months brought torrential rains that produced flooding that ruined scores of buildings and homes.

"They were tough times for our business, definitely," recalls Eric Fritch, president and general manager of the business, which also operates four retail yards. "My brother Bruce was president of the mill at the time and I was running Chinook Lumber, which is the retail side of the business. Mom and dad founded the mill in 1950, so you could say that we all grew up with sawdust in our veins."

The former Washington State graduate and ex-Boeing engineer further revealed that he had gone into retail because he didn't see himself as being "a desk bound" sort of guy for a large corporation. "Retail just had an allure for me and being that I knew the lumber business from my work in the family mill, opening up a retail site seemed like the natural thing to do."

According to Eric, the fire and subsequent winter storms took their toll on Bruce Fritch's patience. "My brother had taken over the mill from my parents in 1976. He'd seen the operation grow and worked hard to help make that a possibility. After all of the work that he had put into the business, he just did not feel uP to having to rebuild it. His heart just wasn't in it. The cost was going to be high and the amount of work involved in rebuilding (the mill) was just too much. He would have liked to have sold what was left of the mill operation and moved on."

than a Fritch from owning and operating the business. "Where we're located is not the sort of place that one expects to find a mill," Eric states. "We have grandfathered zoning in a rural residential area and can operate as a sawmill or develop the land for houses."

Faced with this last obstacle, Bruce offered to sell the business to Eric. "I wasn't exactly a stranger to the mill," Eric asserts. "I'd put myself through college working there, so I knew the ropes. Besides, I'd been working in the retail operation for 10 years." He further noted that he liked the challenge of rebuilding and revitalizing the family business.

Almost immediately, Eric accepted his brother's offer and officially took over his current position in July, 1997. As expected, rebuilding wasn't easy, but Fritch remained determined. "We did have several advantages in our favor that allowed us to avoid further disaster," he states. "We got the planer mill up and going pretty fast, and over the next few months we added a unit saw for pre-cutting and a twin-band resaw for large cants. So, we were able to generate income from custom and secondary manufacturing."

In time, the mill would come to average 600,000-700,000 feet of wood per month. Several months even

The other three retail sites are located in Monroe. North Bend and Woodinville. The Woodinville location deals primarily in closeout and liquidation lumber, hence the name, Chum Lumber Division.

"If you know anything about salmon fishing, you'll understand the significance of the names." Fritch laughs. "A Chinook is considered the best of the salmons, while the Chum is looked down on as being less than desirable."

"Coming from a retail way of thinking, I saw the mill as a way to augment the retail side of our business, to become more vertically integrated. We have four retail sites. The original location is in Clearview. This is our main retail site. the hub of that side of the business. Our other locations are all North and East of Seattle. I figure that 50Vo of the mill's work is for our retail locations. Right now, we have about four to six weeks of on-site work here in the mill. That's the most we've had for quite some time, so you can see how the business has picked up. We are building a strong niche and doing things Home Depot can't

Depending upon the time of year, Fritch Mill employs nine workers, while a staff of 45 services the retail locations.

Fritch cites Chinook's diverse product mix as the reason why the business has been successful over the years. "We're known as a business that carries a lot of hard-tofind timbers and beams," he says. "I felt it was important to have manufacturing capabilities for such items, and to keep the prices reasonable and our margins intact."

As for the future of the industry, Fritch admits that he is optimistic, but still unsure as to what may lie ahead. "There's been a strain in remanufac-

turing lately," he says. "More mills are doing more in-house jobs than before and not farming out much. We're quite busy though, so hopefully things will remain on an upswing. I'm grateful for the outpouring of support from customers as well as from competing mills. That's what makes me proud of our industry."

Know what you're getting with siTheated to Refusal"

"Treated to Refusal." So*" *uy interpret it to be the ultimate degree of protection, but what does it really mean?

To produce "Treated to Refusal" material, the manufacturer forces preservatives into the wood until it refuses to accept any more. It may meet proper penetration or retention for its intended building applicationor it may not.

The treater will not guarantee the product's performance, nor will the product bear the quality mark of an accredited American Lumber Standard Committee agency. In a sense, the term is somewhat of a product disclaimer.

There are several reasons why treaters choose to identify treated wood in this manner. Those factors may include:

o High moisture content in the wood prior to treatment. Excess

water in the wood cells will prevent penetration of the preservatives under pressure.

o High percentage of impenetrable heartwood or refractory wood.

o A species, subspecies or species group of wood recognized as difficult to treat.

Thetreater will not guarantee the product's performance nor will the product bear the quality mark of an accredited ALSC agency,

o No or improper incising per species' specifications.

o In some cases, buyers will actually specify it.

Contractors that use or dealers that sell "Treated to Refusal" material could be in for a costly lesson. To conform with the requirements of the 1997 Uniform Building Code, treated wood must bear the quality stamp of an accredited ALSC agency. Because ALSC agencies do not recognize "Treated to Refusal" as a legitimate standard, they will not stamp it and therefore. the material is in violation of the UBC.

Recently, code officials discovered that several residential projects in Arizona were in violation of the UBC because "Treated to Refusal" had been used in construction.

Even though the projects were near completion, the contractors were forced to tear down the dwellings and replace the "Treated to Refusal" material with ALSC quality stamped treated wood... an unfortunate and very expensive mistake, fo help your customer avoid such costly oversights, avoid stocking "Treated to Refusal" material. Also, remind them to include on their purchase orders and project specifications: "Treated wood must be identified with the quality mark of an accredited ALSC agency." They should remember that agency logos are the key to meeting the requirements of the Uniform Building Code.

Payless Cashways Banks Future On Pros

Payless Cashways, with over $1 billion each in annual sales to both professionals and consumers, has refocused to predominantly pursue the pro market.

"Howevgr," noted acting c.e.o, Donald E. Roller, "we will continue to serve the consumer in markets where it is beneficial to the enterprise. In other markets, we will serve the consumer segment selectively to the extent that their needs align with the needs of our target customer, the professional. As we move forward, it is clear that the professional customer will provide the future growth for Payless Cashways."

During a recent strategy review, the company thoroughly analyzed each store and market. As a result, stores will be consolidated in three markets-Louisville, Ky., from four locations to three; Cincinnati, Oh., from eight locations to seven, and Phoenix, Az., from five locations to four.

The closings should be transparent to pro customers served by those locations because their contractor sales represen0atives are expected to remain the same.

The Kansas City, Mo.-based company currently operates 165 Payless Cashways, Furrow, Lumberjack, Hugh M. Woods, Knox Lumber and Contractor Supply locations in 20 states.

Eagle To Double In Size

Eagle Hardware & Garden plans to double in size from its current 32locations in three to four years.

This year, Eagle opened its first store in California, in La Quinta, and will unveil units in Aurora (Denver), Co.; Chino Hills, Norwalk and Westminster, Ca.; Smokey Point

(Seattle), Wa., and Sparks, Nv.

Next year eight to l0 stores will be added, including Boise, Id.; Covina, Long Beach and San Luis Obispo, Ca.; Tigard, Or.; Woodinville, Wa., and its second unit in Reno, Nv.

Twelve openings are expected in 2000.

When asked to list the top reasons for choosing a home improvement/ home furnishings retailer, 29Vo cited knowledgeable salespeople, a 6Vo increase from 1997. Fair prices (66Vo), selection (48Vo) and quality merchandise (39Vo)led the list.

The Index monitors retail customer spending and is based on a random national poll of more than 1,000 homeowners.

The study credited a strong economy and stable interest rates for allowing do-ifyourselfers to perform their own home improvements. Of those surveyed, 39Vo revealed they plan on tackling home improvements themselves this year, up 8Vo from 1997. Not surprising, the budget for performing these home improvements registered an increase as well, up 10Vo to $2,929. Over one-third (34Vo) will begin their projects this month.

This year, the most common projects are interior decorating and refurbishing (59Vo), renovation and remod-

eling (32V0), landscaping (29Vo), gardening (27Vo), mandatory maintenance (24Vo), exterior decorating work (22Vo), expansion (l4Vo), and restoration (13Vo).

Approximately lSVo of remodelers will refurbish at least one room in the house, with attention shifting away from last year's top room, the living room, to the bedroom (27Eo). The living room came in second at 17Vo.

In the kitchen, 43Vo will install new cabinets, with the majority choosing wood (907o) over any other material. About 6l%o will add new countertops, choosing formica and ceramic tile over Corian and granite surfaces. Nearly half (45Vo) wtll install new appliances, choosing white or almond over trendier colors such as stainless steel and black. Other popular additions include a breakfast table, stools, work center or island, and baker's rack.

Throughout the rest of the house, the majority of d-i-yers are following either a neutral (6OVo) or blue/green (46Vo) color scheme, installing wallto-wall carpeting (24Vo), and adding a variety of lighting accents (25Vo) to a contemporary design theme (317o). An additional l9Vo will add or convert a room into either a home office or home entertainment room.

Plum Creek Into REIT

In a move to finance acquisitions more easily, Plum Creek Timber Co., Seattle, Wa., plans to convert into a real estate investment trust.

While Potlatch and GeorgiaPacific have spun off timberlands into REITs to separate the holdings from other underperforming operations and other competitors are considering similar moves, Plum Creek is reportedly the first timber company proposing to convert the entire firm into such a trust.

Plum Creek, though, has no slumping pulp and paper operations, but is a master limited partnership, a structure with similar tax advantages to a trust but unpopular with mutual funds and pension funds. Becoming a REIT should broaden its appeal to investors and provide the option of using REIT shares, which are more liquid than partnership units, to finance purchases.

Plum Creek. which has been among the more active buyers of forestland, especially in the Southeast, currentlv owns 2.4 million acres.

Tool Sales Push $12 Billion

Demand for power and hand tools should increase 57o annually to $11.9 billion in 2002, forecasts the Freedonia Group.

Low-cost imports from Taiwan and China will continue to take market share away from U.S.-made products in most sectors. Despite the widening trade gap, U.S. producen will still find good export opportunities for certain products, such as electric and gaspowered tools.

Demand for power tools will lead advances, spurred by the introduction of more powerful cordless tools targeting not just consumers, but also professional users. Among power tools, hydraulic and powder-actuated tools will enjoy the strongest gains, followed by electric types.

Serious d-i-yers are expected to purchase more expensive, powerful tools to complete increasingly sophisticated household projects. And, based on their higher technology requirements and greater amenability to innovation, power products are more insulated from pricing competition than are hand tools.

Hand tool demand will trail market averages largely due to product durability and lower average prices. The

largest increases will be in the professional market, since the increasing sophistication of many professional tasks will result in more specialized and multi-functional hand tools. Although hand service tools will dominate sales, edge tools will lead sales growth.

Pro users should continue to comprise over two-thirds of the market due to their use of a greater variety of more expensive tools. Above average growth in the industrial sector will offset the decline in housing starts and a deceleration in non-residential outlays.

Consumer tool demand will rise slightly faster than the professional sector, largely due to the popularity of d-i-y activities and trade-up by consumers to more powerful, featureladen power tools,

MacMillan Bloedel, Canada's largest timber company, intends to phase out clearcutting in old growth forests over the next five Years.

The company will establish three stewardship zones, which set the intensity of logging, and utilize variable retention harvesting, which protects biodiversity by retaining portions of

the original forest in various size stands and clusters.

"At MB, this is the future of forestry," said president Tom Stephens. "It reflects what our customers are telling us about the need for certified products, but equally important, it reflects changing social values and new knowledge about forest ecology."

Synthetic Stucco Fights Back

Hammered by homeowner lawsuits and bad publicity, the Exterior Insulation and Finish System industry is fighting back.

The industry recently won two court battles against owners of waterdamaged homes. Manufacturers admitted there have been some problems with water intrusion in homes with EIFS systems, but traced the problems to poor quality, even noncode compliant-windows and improper flashings and sealings.

Responding to the concerns, several manufacturers have begun designing new systems with specialized drainage channels to allow any moisture to escape to the outside. The industry is also continuing to inform builders on proper installation techmques.

To exploit the perceived problems with EIFS, the competing Southwest Brick Institute recently launched a tv ad campaign attacking BIFS producs. EIFS producers responded with their own series of print ads ("Bricks Don't Stand Up," "Brick Shouldn't Make Cracks").

According to the industry EIFS has

grown to over lTVo of the commercial market and more than lOVo of the residential sector.

About 78% of Ace Hardware dealers recently polled say more women are shopping at their stores today than five years ago. Of this group,56Vo reported a dramatic increase.

According to the survey, more than threequarten of the retailers atEibute the rise to increased interest among women in d-i-y products and projects. Another factor, say 65Vo, is the greater

number of single-family households.

Painting is by far the most popular project among women (77Vo), followed by renovating the kitchen or bathroom (l2%o), and adding new landscaping (87o).

WWPA Adds Export Service

Western companies making and exporting value-added wood products can maintain access to foreign markets through a new Western Wood Products Association service.

Countries in Europe and elsewhere

are requiring that all imported wood products be heat heated or kiln dried to protect against importing pests or plant diseases. These restrictions once applied only to lumber, but have recently expanded to cover secondary wood products, as well.

WWPA's kiln drying documentation service, conducted in coopera' tion with the U.S. Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service, assists western secondary manufacturers in securing required export documents proving the wood has been kiln dried.

Fees for the service are based on the volume exported. WWPA provides all necessary materials, including documentation forms, marking stencils, manuals and naining.

Rebuilding Center A First For Portland

While several shops in Portland, Or., market selected salvaged items, such as vintage fixtures, the area now has a source for less exotic used boards and beams.

Shane Endicott and Janelle Schmidt have opened the Rebuilding Center, a non-profit center that buys and sells reusable plywood, end cuts, flooring, chipboard, siding, bricks, countertops, doors, windows, toilets, bathtubs, sinks, faucets, fixtures and other building materials.

"It's remarkable Portland didn't have one," says Schmidt. "There's so much potential, especially with the environmental ethic here."

The idea came to Endicott while developing and managing a pilot project, the Wood Depot, to market used building supplies for a Catholic charity. He and Schmidt visited 15 similar businesses along the West Coast before selecting their roomy warehouse.

A regional government agency, required to meet state-mandated waste-reduction goals, provided a $35,000 start-up grant. The partners chose non-profit status, enabling them to stock a wider variety of products

longer, keeping more out of landfills, and to offer contractors tax deductions for donations, making recycling more attractive.

During the June 6 grand opening, the shop held a contest to select the most creative, useful and best built creation made completely from recycled materials.

California Redwood Association is setting up a product locator database on its Web site (www.calredwood. org) to help end-users looking for local sources for redwood lumber and specialty products.

Stocking wholesalers, retailers and specialty manufacturers (furniture, planters, architectural millwork, etc.) of redwood are invited to be listed.

Burning Trees For Electricity

High-tech power plants that generate clean, renewable electricity by burning timber are being researched by Shell and other firms.

Over the next five years, Royal Dutch/Shell Group will invest $500 million in renewable energy, includ-

ing plantations that supply timber<r "biomass"-to burn as an electricity source. Long-range, Shell predicts that by the year 2050, the world's energy consumption of biomass for electricity generation will equal that of gas and oil today.

Energy use of biomass, which now accounts for l2%o of the world's primary energy, is rising l1Vo annually on a pace to reach 250 megawatts installed by the year 2000, says Shell.

UP Plans RR Spending

Union Pacific Corp. plans to spend more than $1.4 billion over the next five years, including up to $160 million this year on infrastructure in Texas and Louisiana.

To help fund improvement, UP is considering selling its $1 billion-ayear trucking business, Overnite Transportation Co., in a public offering. To return to its core railroad business, UP has been divesting real estate, oil, natural gas and hazardous waste subsidiaries, and is negotiating to sell its small contract logistics business, Skyway Freight Systems Inc. Improvements will stretch along a 530-mile corridor from San Antonio to New Orleans.

Some argue customer service suffers from automating the order entry process with customer-enabled ordering systems. Is it really easier to pick up a phone and place an order? What if your supplier is already on the phone taking orders from another customer? Dealers are left waiting or have to call back at an inconvenient time-wasting valuable time and money.

Internet order entry systems allow for anytime, day or night ordering. "(Our customers) like to do business at their convenience, not at our convenience," explains Dick Scherer, system manager at hon City. "In a lot of

cases, that convenience is after hours. With EntryNET, they can access our Web site, open the program, enter their user name and password, and begin placing their own orders."

He adds, "If you aren't sure how your customers will respond to this convenience, ask yourself how often you stand in a teller line to get spending cash versus the convenience of an ATM.''

Additionally, with Web-based business-to-business ordering systems, the end user has complete control over the order. He can select the items, make changes to the order, enter desired ship dates, and more. "The one thing our retailers like most about our system and the Internet is that they like to control their orders," Scherer says. "They don't like the fact that they have to fax or phone it to us and have them get misinterpreted. They know when they place an order in EntryNET, they placed it themselves. They can view it and know it is exactly what they want. And, with its instant order acknowledgement, they have immediate confirmation of their order."

Recycled Waste Exempted

Wood treaters have gained a special wastewater exclusion from the federal Resource Conservation & Recovery Act.

After years of lobbying by the American Wood Preservers Institute and others in the industry, the EPA has amended the definition of solid waste to exclude recycled wood preserving wastewaters and spent preservatives. Previously, treaters had to report, as waste, process waters recycled and used repeatedly in the treating process.

Electronic Data Interchange is the most widely utilized technology among building material distributors, according to a recent North American Building Material Disnibution Association study.

EDI is used by 49Vo of respondents, the lnternet by 47Vo, bar coding by 22Vo, and Vendor Managed Inventory by 9Vo. Computer Telephony Integration ranked fifth.

Distributors annually spend an average l.83%o of total gross sales on technology and, O,SVo on technology naining and education.

Vinyl Siding May Bump Wood

Vinyl siding is projected to capture roughly half of the total siding market by 2001, largely at the expense of wood, according to a new Freedonia Group study.

In three years, vinyl's share of the siding market should grow from 4l%o (38 million squares) to over 49 million squares, while wood-based siding drops from 1996's227o to l3%o in 2001. Reportedly, wood-based siding has higher maintenance requirements and installed costs, and alternatives become better at mimicking wood's natural benefits.

As fiber cement siding and acrylic stucco panels find good acceptance, stucco, stone and related products will show particularly large gains. Metal panels, for industial uses, and brick will increase steadily.

Despite a decline in single family housing starts and slowing growth in average house size, overall siding demand in the U.S. should ise l.7%o annually to nearly 100 million squares in the year 2001, powered by continuing growth in improvement/replacement and non-residential construction.

The highest gains in siding demand will be in the West, where the construction market is less saturated, the economy healthy and in-migration continuing.

The Sunbelt region of the South (especially the South Atlantic sub-region), also experiencing steady population in-migration and expanding local economies, will also enjoy above-average siding demand growth.

Do Yellow Pages Work For You?

While American businesses annually spend more than $ll billion on Yellow Pages advertising, much of it is wasted on ineffective ads, contends an industry expert.

"Yellow Pages advertising can be the lifeblood of your business or it can be little more than your monthly donation to the directory company," says Barry Maher, author of Getting the Most from Your Yellow Pages Advertising. "Even when the funds are properly allocated-good directories, effective headings, appropriate ad sizes-the ads themselves can be so poorly designed as to be virtually useless."

Yellow Pages ads work best for certain businesses. "You can be spending 25Vo of yorx gross and be spread too thin or overspending at l%," he says.

The ads work best on consumers without established buying patterns, such as tourists and newcomers to the area; shoppers who want to compare businesses, and those looking for irregularly used products or services, such as chimney sweeping.

Beech: the party hardwood

NIQUE for its chips being used in the brewing and aging of a popular beer, beech is also used in many other applications.

Major uses include furniture, boxes, millwork, flooring, woodenware, novelties, truck body parts, toys, dowels, bobbins, spools, ties, and a multitude of other turnings.

The hardwood, which is occasionally marketed as red and white beech depending on its color, has a reddishbrown heartwood with a thin pale sapwood. The unique sapwood gives the hardwood its distinct light appearance.

The wood has a straight, close, interlocking grain that is porous. It is strong, shock resistant, and readily bends under steam. It also holds nails well, although it has a tendency to split.

It takes paint, stain and bleach well. The hardwood is ranked above average in its planing and shaping qualities.

It is heavier than other hardwoods, with an an average density of 45 lb./cu. ft. and requires care in work-

The most common species found in the Appalachian area, Southern regions and throughout the eastern United States, except for southern Florida, is the American beech tree (fagus grandifolia). The Carolina beech, Fagus grandifu lia caroliniana, is a less common species.

In the Appalachian area, it is often found growing in pure stands on the lower east and northern slopes of the mountains and its unique gray color makes it noticeable along the mountainside.

It grows best in parts of the country that are well-drained, but not on lands worked over long periods or on swamps.

A very slow growing tree, it may require up to 200 years to reach saw timber size (14"-16") in the northern limits of its range.

In the South, the growing time is cut in half because of the longer growing seasons.

In size, beech, also known as sweet beech, is about average with other sawn logs, reaching heights ranging from 80'-120' with trunks 3'-4' in diameter.

Similar to plain sawn sycamore, beech contains less crowded and smaller pith rays. It can be difficult identifying it after it is cut.

Forgery Suspect Arrested

An employee of Home Depot, San Leandro, Ca., was arrested on suspicion of forgery, burglary and conspiracy after trying to use a credit card account that she reportedly opened fraudulently earlier that day, according to police.

Keysindra J. Wade, 22, aroused the suspicions of a clerk at the Home Depot in San Ramon when she tried to charge a $ 1,000 gift certificate, because the amount was so high, the account was new, she already had

charged $1,500 on the card at another Bay Area Home Depot, the photo on the driver's license she used didn't look like her, and her signature didn't match.

When questioned by a manager who had been called for approval, Wade reportedly became angry and left the store. Minutes later, officers pulled over her car and arrested her and the driver.

Donald Carleton McCann, 72, co-founder ofM& S Building Supply, Monterey, Ca., died June 24 of cancer in Monterey.

A native of Modesto, Ca., he served in the Army Engineers during WWII, rising to staff sergeant.

He was the first and only graduate in 1948 of Monterey Peninsula College and began his tenure in the lumber industry around that same time.

He and partner Richard Stillwell co-founded M & S Supply in 1962. He becarne the sole owner in 1969 and ran the company until his illness.

He was a past president of the Lumber Merchants Association and a member of the executive committee of the present Lumber Association of California & Nevada.

Marshall Edward "Bud" Spaulding, 78, retired sales manager of Hanel Lumber Co., Odell, Or., died June I I in The Dalles, Or.

A native of The Dalles and graduate of Whitman College, he served in the U.S. Army during WWII.

He began working for Hanel Lumber Co. in 1950 and retired in 1984.

Ross Ingraham, Jr., 67, retired co-founder and president of Diablo Timber Co., Napa, Ca., died June I I of cancer in Sonoma, Ca.

A native of Eureka. Ca.. and a graduate of UCLA, he began working for Western Pine Supply, Emeryville, Ca.. in 1957.

He was a sales manager for redwood sales at Sunol Forest Products, Pleasanton, Ca., from 1978-1980.

He co-founded Diablo Timber Co. in 1980 and was president until his retirement in 199 I
