Western Hardwood Association convention

I 9G supply. species diversification and alder promo- b tlon were among the topics discussed by the Western Hardwood Association at their spring meeting in KailuaKona, Hawaii.

Opening day session was devoted to personal development and education. Jania McDonald, a Hawaiian health and exercise specialist, stressed the benefits ofless strenuous exercise such as walking. Diet is equal with exercise in maintaining good health, she emphasized.

University of Hawaii professor Ed Kanahele related the history of the island, its ethnic diversity and the role it plays in today's Hawaii. He noted the tolerance that marks much of the interaction between various groups in the islands.

Motivational expert Loren Lasher then related ways to overcome personal negatives and increase personal happiness through self-motivation. Lasher said a positive mental attitude was essential to fully develop personal capabilities.

The next day's meeting dealt with a variety of reports concerning association activities in the hardwood field. The long range planning committee defined several targets for the WHA: increased log supplies of alder, diversifying the species base, clarifying grading rules and increasing the promotion of alder. Also planned was a committee to seek federal and state grant money to fund additional studies of alder.

As part of the promotion efforts the Western Hardwood Association intends to publish an alder terminology sheet.

Association manager Dave Sweitzer reported on the presentation he made at the recent California Depart_ ment of Forestry meeting in Redding, Ca. The aim of the meeting was to develop California hardwood species such as tan oak, black oak and madrone, much as the WHA has done with alder in the pacific Northwest. Sweitzer said that California needs to establish grades, standards and rules to make the woods commercially vi_ able. "California is where Washington and Oregon were 30 years ago," he said.

The final speaker was Peter Simmons, manager of the McCandless Ranch, Captain Cook, Hi., and president of the Hawaiian Forest Industries Association. He told the 100 year history of the wood products business in the islands and the present need to devote more land to growing trees, especially koa, the beautiful Hawaiian hardwood. The island group, now two years old, has been making some progress in their efforts against local environmentalists who seek to block tree plinting and harvesting.

Following other committee reports, it was announced the fall meeting will be held in the Medford/Ashland, Or., area and the 1990 spring meeting in Newport Beach. Ca. This meeting, held May 10-13, was based at rhe Kona Surf Resort.
