Construction Costs Soqr Upword

In one of the sharpest increases in a decade, the nation's construction costs soared an average of four percent during the year ending April 30. Gains generally were higher in larger metropolitan areas.

"Both labor rates and materials prices contributed to the cost increase which, in some areas, jumped 13 percent," said William H. Edgerton, manager of Dodge Building Cost Services. According to the survey, building construction costs are 205.7 percent higher today than in 1941.

An average 7.2 percent rise in hourly wage rates for building trades craftsmen was the primary catalyst in the climb in building costs, Edgerton said. With some exceptions average building materials prices rose only l.B percent during the same period, he added.

The major exception was lumber which experienced price increases of as much as 80 percent in some categories during the past 12 months. But, according to the Dodge survey, many lumber prices have been reduced markedly lately and this trend is expected to continue.

Cats and kittens, crabs and spaghetti

ELL known by lumbermen and HooHoos is the annual cracked crab and spaghetti banquet put on by Humboldt HooHoo Club 63 at Eureka, Calif. This year's meeting was no exception, it met all standards and 125 hungry Hoo-Hoos, new kittens and guests enjoyed the traditional feast.

Fran Holmes, club president was assisted by Roger Oilar, r,p. Guests attended from all over the state.

A special guest was Snark of the Uni' verse Ed Roche. A beautiful redwood burl bowl was presented to Snark Roche.

Eleven new kittens were initiated.
