Possoge of the TimberSupply Act is lmperotive
fT WOULD be a serious mistake to take for grantr ed the passage of any of the bills now before the United States Congress generally titled "A National Timber Supply Act."
That their passage now seems reasonably assured does not give us pause to let up the pressure. Rather it becomes the most important time to increase individual and collective actions and put the factual story before our legislators with increased vigor and in-depth substantiation. For an example of an in' dustry good citizen see our Letters Section, p' 38, this issue.
Politicians historically cater with the greatest fidelity to that group or industry that makes the loudest racket or creates the greatest public uproar. It took a groundswell of public indignation over lumber prices combined with contacts by concerned industry leaders, to gain their attention to the serious problem of an adequate supply of forest products for the nation. This is no time to let their attention drift off to a newer political vogue. Failure to push now could conceivably doom the bills' chances to become law.
The bills in question are S lB32 in the Senate and HR 10325 and HR 10344 in the House. Basically, they all would provide a self-sustaining fund to permit intensive management of the national forests to provide greater availability of timber to help meet our national housing goals. None would remove or reduce any present wilderness area or national park.
Our nation and our industry needs this legislation. Contact your man in Washington, D. C., let's get the job done.
No Chqnge Expected From the Sierrq Club
rftHOSE WHO expect a softer line from the Sierra |- Club following the mernbers' recent repudiation of their executive secretary David Brower are likely to be disappointed.
While in office Brower was a controversial administrator, but his opinions about conservation/ preservation were shared by the majority, no matter how they viewed his ventures in publishing and club administration. No one questioned his basic philosophy as it was also theirs. It was only when he began to save the universe that they decided he was getting too big for his britches.
That his views are still those of the club is all too clear from a speech recently given by a Sierra Club spokesman before the Southern Forest Institute.
The speaker, using a prepared text, has been reported as being truculent in attitude, which, considering some of the stufi we have seen them dish out, is probably being generous. Threats for the host institute abounded and concluded with the illmannered assertion that their "day of reckoning (with the Sierra Club) was coming."
The Sierra Club may have had its public problems with the Brower flap, but it is a long way from being either prostrate or even passive. Their enormous social and political muscle could do wonders in effecting the greatest good for the greatest number. We will be happily surprised if they do other than continue in their self-seeking ways of limiting land use to suit their narrow concepts.
