Complementary businesses Merge for mutual profits

It's true that prior to the 50's the average dealer really was a "lumber dealer", but the changes the industry has under. gone since that time have been staggering.

Lumberman and nurseryman combine operations. each helps the other's business customers get double benef it. outdoor living business proves profitable.

Needless to say, the additions of hardware, electrical, plumbing, paint, hand and power tool,. home planning and garden supply departments have been highly successful for dealers catering to the retail trade and now it appears that nursery stocks may be the trend. Of course, space is the big factor here, but several dealers from Arizona to Washington with enough extra yard area have found the nursery and building materials business highly compatible.

Burton French Lumber Co. in Walnut Creek, Calif., is one such operation and while the building materials operation was actually added to an existing nursery the result has been the same. $ucce$$.

Ed French, co-owner of the operation, explains it this way. "I guess it first struck me that outdoor livine was real big business after I spent a few hours just watching the cash register at Grant ture shows how strong store lighting can make any display look better. "I was looking for a site for my yard and I suddenly realized how well the two businesses could complement each other.
