Weyco Adds B.C./Southland Ocean Route

Weyerhaeuser Co.'s marine shipping subsidiary has launched a new "short sea service" linking British Columbia with Southern California through the Port of Long Beach, Ca.

Westwood Shipping Line will transport Weyerhaeuser's and other shippers' cargo using the Westwood Pomona, a 10,200-gt freight side loader it recently acquired from Finnish carrier Birka Cargo. The 20year-old vessel. which joins seven other ships in the Westwood fleet, has been outfitted to transport a wide variety of commodities.

The new service begins next month.

"By adding this new service to our own shipping line, Weyerhaeuser is in a unique position to build value for its businesses and for new customers." said Westwood Shipping Line president Craig Larvrence. "As ground transportation becomes increasingly challenging due to congestion and higher costs. we're offering a strong logistical alternative rvith cost. reliability and environmental benefi ts."

Westwood Shipping also makes 52 transpacific round-trip voyages annu- ally. serving customers in more than 20 ports in Japan. Korea and China from Longvierv and Seattle. Wa., and Vancouver. B.C.

Weyerhaeuser renamed the nerv vessel in honor of its first ship. the SS Pomona. rvhich it bought in 1923 to move rvood products betrveen North American ports. The ship spent 23 years sailing for the company. including use as a military transport during World War II.

Weyco Vacating Port

Weyerhaeuser Co. will relocate its Tacoma, Wa, log export facility on the Hylebos Waterway to the Port of Olympia and has shuttered its Puget Sound Chip Center to make room for expansion of the Port of Tacoma

The company is still considering whether and where it will open a new chip facility. The old plant had exported wood chips to Asia

In November, Weyco agreed to a $12.5 million settlement with the port to vacate the 25acrc site on the Blair Waterway I I years before is lease expired

The port will tear down the 33-year-chip facility, so the waterway can be widened to accommodate larger ships.
