Robert M. Neiman. 88. co-founder of Neiman Reed Lumber Co., Van Nuys, Ca., died Feb. 7 in Indian Wells, Ca.
A highly decorated Marine tank commander, Mr. Neiman led assaults at Gaudacanal, Kwajalein Atoll, Rio, Namir, Saipan, Tinian, and Iwo Jima during World War II and rose to the rank of Colonel. He was the recipient of the Navy Cross, three Bronze Stars, four Presidential Unit Citations, six Battle Stars, Asiatic Pacific Theater Ribbons, and the North China Expeditionary Medal.
After the war, he and his tank battalion's executive officer. Robert L. Reed. formed Neiman-Reed Lumber & Supply Co. in 1948.
In 1963, Neiman Reed opened its first retail store, Neiman Reed's Lumber City, in Chatsworth, Ca., focusing on do-it yourselfers-a new concept in retailing at the time. Under Mr. Neiman's leadership, the business expanded into a 14-store chain.
Mr. Neiman retired after selling the operations in 1986 to Jess Ruf. who later renamed the retail chain California Do it Centers and relocated the wholesale division to Panorama City, Ca.
Mary Jane Lundquist, 85, former president and cofounder of Hardware Hawaii. Kailua. Hi.. died Feb. 4.
Ms. Lundquist and her husband, Dana, moved to Hawaii in 1952, after visiting during a vacation from their hardware store in Minnesota. They opened Hardware Hawaii two years later.
Ms. Lunquist served as controller and president until 1982, when her son David took over those roles. She continued as vice president and director until her death.
George Kovacovich, 92, long-time Northern California lumberman, died Jan. 25 in Santa Rosa, Ca.

Hammond Lumber before joining the army in 1943. He served as a staff sergeant with the 105th infantry regiment in the Pacific, where he won two Purple Hearts.
He returned to the lumber industry after the war, managing sawmill and planing operations at Dickinson Lumber, Cloverdale, and Farrell Truss Co., Cloverdale and Schellville. From 1969 to 1916, he worked as a buyer at West Range Lumber Co. From 1976 until his retirement at age 65, he worked at Knollwood Lumber.
Patti Bentley, 62, founder and president of Vortex Reload, Portland, Or., died Feb. 2 in Lake Oswego, Or.
While attending high school, she worked at her father's company, Hub City Plywood. After studying at Oregon State University, she worked for 40 years at various forest products firms across the country before becoming a partner in Tristar Transload. Portland.
Ms. Bentley founded Vortex in2004.
Frank Dooley Buehl, 85, a Memphis, Tn., lumberman known for selling southern hardwoods into the West, died Feb. 7.
Mr. Buehl bought F.T. Dooley Lumber Co., Memphis, from his uncle in the early 1950s. He expanded the business by selling southern hardwoods on the West Coast, primarily in Southern California.
During World War II and the Korean War, he was a bomber pilot, earning a Purple Heart for being shot down over enemy territory in Greece during WW II.
He was a long-time member of the Lumbermen's Club of Memphis, serving as president in the late 1960s.
